But readers in general should be reminded . . .

We knew that would occur.

The whole purpose of the shutdown,
was to flatten the curve
so the US medical system would not be overwhelmed.

Flattening the curve just changes the “when” the infections occur. Not the “if” or the severity.
As Dr. Lisa Maragakis, Senior Director of Infection Prevention at Johns Hopkins Medical School explained, flattening the curve means that “ the same large number of patients arrived at the hospital at a slower rate. [emphasis mine]”

We also don’t know for sure how much “soaring” is really taking place, or if this represents more bogus numbers as we have seen in the past.

Here is an example . . .
. . . Countless labs have reported a 100 percent positivity rate, which means every single person tested was positive. Other labs had very high positivity rates. FOX 35 found that testing sites like Centra Care reported that 83 people were tested and all tested positive. Then, NCF Diagnostics in Alachua reported 88 percent of tests were positive.

Interesting. I know of people in Illinois that are very pro-mask wearing. I don’t know if all are that way, but hope that with more and more people wearing face masks that the number of reported virus infections decreases not increases. With these reported COVID case increases it does make me wonder though how helpful are wearing masks.
 
My small town has had a number of record cases in one day.
 
I agree.

I’d rather have someone cover their nose and mouth when they sneeze or cough.

For those of you who think masks aren’t working, would you prefer someone sneeze or cough with their nose and mouth uncovered?

After all, it doesn’t really matter because a covering doesn’t really work.

We also know that a secondary goal is to minimize the number of people who die from covid-19 or are left with permanent organ damage. The goal is not to to stay just under the saturation point of the US medical system, because our health-care workers, even if they are not completely overwhelmed, are nevertheless suffer cumulative psychological and emotional and physical stress that is reducing their effectiveness, and reducing the availability of non-covid health care. This is no time to give up on their efforts and essentially tell them that their efforts are hopeless.

I think that has changed now.

At first, there weren’t enough masks for the professionals, so the direction to the population was “Don’t wear masks”. That was misinterpreted as a medical pronouncement instead of a supply-side reality.

Now, I get online ads for commercially made masks all the time. So, civilians, wear a mask - they’re plentiful. It couldn’t hurt and it might help.

We are learning more about the virus and treatments. I don’t think the goal anymore is to prevent the overwhelming of the health care system. The goal is now to protect as many people as possible and institute measures to ensure we don’t have a much worse outbreak, and at the same time try to get the people that are out of work back to work and making money.

Of course it would soar. The leaders and prospective leaders, left and right in America are all useless demagogues incapable of seeing things outside of politics. Unable to show leadership. Unable to understand science.

To be fair @Cathoholic, soldiers standing at attention on hot muggy days have been fainting for ages. The mask might have nothing to do with it. Dehydration likely had more.

Everyone…I have recently heard reports (none official that I could trace) stating that approximately 1/3rd of recovered Covid patients…even those with mild to no symptoms are experiencing long term issues with lung damage, kidney damage and more! While I’ve heard of people having damage post Covid, I haven’t seen anything official. Any news on this from reputable sources?

About 97 degrees and muggy is hot to be forced mask-wearing.
 
Well, it is summer and people are busy and people are travelling and vacationing.
It doesn’t surprise me at all that there will be flare ups.
