Ok so my husband was laid off from his second job in 7 months on Thursday. I go to pick up some heart meds from the pharmacy tonight and are insurance is showing up as canceled! He just go laid off 5 days ago. Obviously somebody screwed up somewhere. We have no savings left since this last job was a huge paycut for my hubby and I’m not working right now because I’m recovering from surgery. I’ve been trying to stay calm and positive but I feel very overwelmed right now.

Sorry just venting…

I can understand what you are going through. My parents are going through same thing. Both are virtually bankrupt with no insurance. I can do only so much and being that I am in manufacturing I worry about my job.

My prayers are with you and your husband.

Please remember God has blessed both of you with a good marriage and love for each other.

***Rayne, I’m so sorry. Typically, insurance carries for 30 days past someone’s end date of work. So, it should carry him through the end of April. I would be angry too! I will keep you and your husband in my prayers…that something comes along very soon for him…and for you, when you are recovered. It is an unsettling time right now in our country.

Please accept my prayers…

Lord, please watch over rayne and her husband during this trying time. Please provide them with ample means to pay their bills, insurance and medicines that they are in need of right now. Lord, you always provide, and we know this, but sometimes, we are truly overwhelmed, in our human capacity to handle things. Please Lord, help us to lean on Your understanding of our circumstances, and not our own. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen. ***

Oh Rayne! Prayers for your husband and the whole situation. May St. Joseph interceed to help your husband provide for your family.

There several Catholic service organizations in most areas. Ask your Pastor about Catholic Charities, Saint Vincent de Paul organizations. You are fortunate in keeping your home. See you mortgage manager and try to make arrangements in postponing some of your payments, Its impossible to refinance when no one is working.
This is the time to ask family for help. I know that is the last thing you would ever do, but this is the time. Hopefully, you may not need much help.
We pray every day for those who are not able to support themselves and their families.

I’m so sorry! :console:

Leave it to insurance companies to completely ruin everything at a time when someone really needs a leg up. I’ve had several experiences with insurance companies and wanted to use a few choice words I will not repeat on a christian forum.

My prayers are with you. Stay strong and faithful and God will return the goodwill tenfold.

I always worry about those of you who have medical conditions and have no choice in whether to buy the meds or not. That must be so hard. It’s an extra (great big) expense that others just don’t have to worry about.

Don’t be afraid to use those resources available to you.

Rayne, I think there is a law that your husband can sign up for health care extension for at least 18 months - I think it’s COLA, or something like that.
You need to call the companies where your husband worked and ask about health care extension plans.
I’m so sorry for your troubles. But like everything else in life, when you’re at the bottom, there’s no where to go but up!!
Keep the faith.

Thank you for giving us a chance to pray for you and your situation. It sounds very frightening - we just went through three months without an income, also with no savings because we’d spent them all on unpaid disability leave for me a few months back, and it was very rough. Your situation sounds harder, though - no one was recovering from illness or anything in our situation.

We were able to borrow a little from friends and scrape our way through. I honestly don’t remember how, it seems amazing in retrospect. We bought all of our groceries on credit and paid all the utilities we could on credit, and managed to never miss a single payment. However, we were calling up the mortgage company and letting them know that we weren’t sure if we could pay or not every month.

One of the difficult things for us was communicating with everyone who was worried about us and wanted to help if we needed it. You may want to consider setting up a Yahoo! group or a blog to keep people updated about your situation, especially if you end up borrowing money from some of them or might need to borrow from them. We were just so busy applying for financial aid, state health care, WIC, food stamps, etc., plus looking for work, updating LinkedIn, resumes, cover letters, studying for certifications, caring for the children, and so on, that we found there weren’t enough hours in the day to call everyone up. I work less hard when I am getting paid!

How is the economy where you are? I know in some places things are already showing a few signs of improvement - this is true in our area.

You’re right, adamsapple, there is such a program. It’s called COBRA, and as part of the stimulus package, there is now a 65% subsidy from the government … so you pay only 35% of the premium, instead of 100%, as used to be the case for COBRA.

Here is some information about it:

dol.gov/ebsa/cobra.html

Rayne, there are also programs which help with needed medications (low cost or no cost) which might be able to help you in the meantime. I’ll search for those and post them in a few minutes.

In the event that you absolutely cannot afford your medication, you should ask your doctor to contact the pharmaceutical company who manufactures the drug. They have programs for people who have lost health insurance and who need the medication.

Also, there’s a company called Express Scripts express-scripts.com/aboutus/
which has partnered with many companies to make drugs cheaper for the consumer.

Don’t give up the ship - get on the phone tomorrow - even call your Congressman or Senator’s office and ask what is available for your family.

We will be praying for you and your family.

Wow! That is great about COBRA. When I was laid off, COBRA would have cost me 1200 per month, there was no way on earth to pay that out of pocket.

As promised, here are the prescription resources:

rxassist.org/patients/default.cfm

pparx.org/SelectMedication.php

needymeds.org/

I believe that these three sources are pretty reputable. PPARX is an industry-supported clearinghouse, RxAssist operates out of Brown University, and NeedyMeds is a non-profit organization supported by donations.

I’ll be praying for you and your family, Rayne. :hug1:

Here’s the link to Cobra in Michigan. Give them a call tomorrow - hopefully, they will give you some guidance.

temporaryinsuranceplan.com/insurance_plans/michigan-cobra-medical.html

You and your husband have been taxpayers your entire lives. Don’t be afraid to avail yourself of services which you contributed to over the years.
Adam, I know that you have the best intentions in trying to help Rayne, but I need to point out that the link above is just trying to sell insurance … it has nothing to do with COBRA. The reason it came up for you on a Google search is because they embedded several ‘meta-keywords’ within their site:

temporary health insurance, short term health insurance, short term medical insurance, temporary medical insurance, fortis, clarendon, hpa, celtic, cobra, apply, quote

COBRA is at the federal level, not state (there are state continuation programs in a some states, but they’re usually only for employer groups who employ less than 20 employees).

Hope this helps. :o

Yep. One of the few good things to come out of the stimulus. 😉

Well we really don’t have health insurance, they canceled it the day my husband was laid off. Something about because they pay it bi-weekly? I’ve never heard of a company that cancels it the day you leave. I thought that was the whole point of Cobra that you don’t lose your insurance. They’re putting the Cobra paperwork in the mail today. So as of right now I’m in heart failure and have Crohn’s disease and have no health insurance. I have medicine waiting at the pharmacy that I have to pay for out of pocket.

My daughter’s confirmation is in less than two weeks and we can’t even afford to go out to dinner for it. I wanted to get her a nice gift and a new dress but I can’t do that either. I do have to come up with something for her sponsor. I’m trying so hard to stay calm because my husband already feels awful about all this but I feel like I’m on the verge of just breaking down and sobbing.

Thank you all for your prayers and the links and tips. I do appreciate it.

have you tried Walmart for your meds as they advertise most drugs are only $4.00.

Also, most of the drug companies that make the pills for Crohn’s pts. do offer patient assistance programs if they do not have any insurance at all. You just have to call their customer service and they will send you the necessary forms to fill out. I do know that Humira, Remicade, Entocort for example do have programs in place for those who can’t afford it.

Feel free to PM me if you need any help in obtaining your treatments for CD. I can even do the research for you if you don’t have the time. I can relate to not having the $$$ for your illness so I know what I am talking about. praying for you and your family. God Bless.

Rayne,
I am so sorry to hear about your problems. I will keep you in my prayers. Please e-mail me. I may be able to help.
