Hi everyone. I’m looking for some advice on having “the talk” with my aging parents. My mother and father are both in their mid-70s. My father has a lot of health issues; obesity, diabetes, heart trouble, circulation issues. He cannot drive and has difficulty walking, especially stairs. My mother is quite healthy for her age but does a lot of work taking care of my dad. My mom has always been “in charge” and my dad will just go along with whatever my mom wants.
They have two homes, one in New Jersey and the other in New York and my mom attempts to take care of both homes herself with very little outside help. Although relatively wealthy, she is extremely frugal and resists hiring regular help like a maid service or lawn care. Both homes are not handicapped friendly and I do not believe can be easily converted, but my mom is very attached to both their homes and all their stuff (They are packrats).
They have two children, myself and my brother. My wife and I live in Connecticut and my brother and his family live in Texas. My wife and I have fertility issues and we’ve been unsuccessfully trying for kids (the Catholic way) for a couple of years, each of us undergoing surgery in the process.
My brother and I have discussed having the elder care, end-of-life talk with mom, but, though I love her dearly, she is a dragon lady with a lot defense mechanisms and a healthy does of pride couple with the usual fears of aging; loss of agency, feeling of uselessness, etc.
I want to do this lovingly because my parents are good people and sacrificed a lot for my brother and I, but I feel hampered by my dad’s abrogation of responsibility to mom and my mom feeling like she has to do everything. I don’t want to force them into anything they don’t want, but I don’t see her being able to take care of my dad, two homes, and a dog by herself for much longer.
Any thoughts or advice?
