I first met a good friend of mine in a scripture study a few years ago, and he is also a convert. Awesome, holy person, incredible ability to quote scripture. He’d always say “ahg-noose”, and that’s why I think of converts when I hear that.Well, I am a convert.
Really? Hmm… Ok. ::shrugs::I learned how to pronounce this from the Franciscan nuns where I attend daily Mass.
If I’m remembering my latin properly (and someone please correct me if I’m wrong), it’s pronounced ‘ahg-noose’ in classical latin. In ecclesial latin, though, it’s ‘ah-nyoos’. A “gn” combination has the same ‘ny’ sound as when you say onion. It’s a minor thing, but one that always seems to jump out at me.
