Oh my, how I sympathise! I am personally trying to rebuild my life through mental illness and I know how much of a struggle it is. I suspect that the answer is a lot simpler than we could make it - provided you have a priest/spiritual director who is experienced in mental health issues and so can both work with you and help apply Canon Law sensitively to your situation. I know it helps in my circumstance that where necessary I can go back to see the chaplain at my psychiatric hospital, who is up to date with my struggles and is in regular fellowship with the diocesan support structures. Fortunately I also have a very good parish priest who also can cope with the fact that I am converting to Catholicism from a fairly “fundamental” Baptist perspective (which is where I have been for the last 25 years) and so I’m also having to learn all sorts of new stuff. At the end of the day, I am simply throwing myself at the foot of the cross and stating “Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner”.
