This is a dangerous attitude to have, esp. concerning martial arts. My husband and I started Tae Kwon Do a few months ago, and we are blessed to have an instructor who focuses on self-defense. The place we train at also teaches Hapkido as well, and we learn a variety of ways to quickly escape holds. That’s one reason why I chose it. If I’m going to get into a fight, it means that either my life is in jeopardy, or my family is in danger. I’m not going to mess around -** I want the aggressor down and bleeding/broken as quickly as possible.**
Our instructor has warned us extensively that in the state we live in (Maryland), we are not permitted to have the first strike. We are legally obligated to try to get away first, and only strike out if we are unable to do so. Also, many times when people use martial arts on others in self-defense, it results in the defender being sued for injuries against their attacker. He has warned me (specifically) that if I decide to freak out because someone is simply following me and I, say, kick them in the groin, I can be fined by the state over $250,000, as well as sued by the attacker. And it’s now classified as a crime, a simple groin kick.
