That’s one reason why I chose it. If I’m going to get into a fight, it means that either my life is in jeopardy, or my family is in danger. I’m not going to mess around -** I want the aggressor down and bleeding/broken as quickly as possible.**
This is a dangerous attitude to have, esp. concerning martial arts. My husband and I started Tae Kwon Do a few months ago, and we are blessed to have an instructor who focuses on self-defense. The place we train at also teaches Hapkido as well, and we learn a variety of ways to quickly escape holds.

Our instructor has warned us extensively that in the state we live in (Maryland), we are not permitted to have the first strike. We are legally obligated to try to get away first, and only strike out if we are unable to do so. Also, many times when people use martial arts on others in self-defense, it results in the defender being sued for injuries against their attacker. He has warned me (specifically) that if I decide to freak out because someone is simply following me and I, say, kick them in the groin, I can be fined by the state over $250,000, as well as sued by the attacker. And it’s now classified as a crime, a simple groin kick.

I don’t think there is any misunderstanding about ki or bowing. Reading the writings of Morihei Ueshiba and other “founding” members of aikido as well as those by his own descendants, ki was and still is very much a real, spiritual force and bowing to Osensei and past masters was and is solidly based on Shinto foundations (specifically the Omoto sect of Shintoism). What is more, friends who have visited the Hombu dojo (the world headquarters for aikido) report that ki and bowing retain their original intent there.

The fact that we are totally at liberty to reframe those aspects in both context and intention, as you did very well above, is what makes aikido accessible to Catholics. For new students of Christian faiths, especially those who have “done their homework” and researched the art, these issues are gravely important and reframing the context and intent of ki and bowing is essential. None the less, we should be honest in that we are doing just that; redefining what they mean so that we can continue to train in good Catholic conscience.

It’s a crazy world we live in.

Our instructor tells us that the first step in defense is to a) give the other person what they want. If you have something in your wallet that’s important enough to fight over, then take it out.

However, if that doesn’t work, or if (for example), there’s an intruder in the house or someone is attacking my family, then it’s time for more direct action.

I love martial arts and practice boxing whenever I get the chance, but I would never rely on it for home protection. It kind of reminds me of that scene in Indiana Jones where the guy does all of the fancy martial arts and sword work and then Jones just pulls out his gun and shoots him. 🙂

I would want to learn a martial art that focuses on the use of modern weapons. I was thinking of starting in something like Krav Maga or Spetnez system.

Very true. Unfortunately, there are reasons why firearms are not an option right now.

Although I like krav maga, I have to say that with any system you have to look for a quality teacher.

I’ve been teaching aikido for over twenty years now and it is by no means lame. It is a revolution in martial arts principals and their are many styles of it just as BJJ is a style to the principals of ground controls. The last thing you want to do in a real world situation is go to the ground. However, due to the likelihood of such, you want to be effective when and if you get there. In the sport, it is awesome because you have only one apponent, He does not have a knife, gun or any other weapon, is not trying to kill you and someone is allways there to pull him off of you.

As a cop with several years of high risk patrol I can assure you it is effective and studying it has saved me in many of encounters

I can tell you one thing for sure about aikido is that for every attack there is and Aikido response. It is very internal and is the most Catholic martial art you can find. Father Barron said this about aikido in his Seven Deadly Sins/Seven Lively Virtues lecture video, " Aikido is a martial art that does not attempt to hurt or injure your attacker but to leave them laughing on the floor thinking that they can’t win". He also referred to the sermon on the Mount as "a spiritual aikido ".

I have trained in Kitoryu, Hokkaryu, Daitoryu and other Jujitsu and aikijujitsu systems. I have trained in Kali, Muay tai, Wing Chun, Shoot Fighting, Judo, Brazilian Jui Jitsu Shotokan and several Okinawan Katate along with Tae Kwon Do, I trained to an effective leval in as many martial arts systems as I could to better understand aikido. Master in one study and take as many electives as you can.

Anyone who has ANY questions can call or text me 601-910-6166
