Well I think ATT has a pretty strong defense. Switching from Current TV to Al Jazeera America is quite a switch up. I don’t know much about Currents viewer base. But Al Jazeera has a pretty bad rep in the west. I think most will not watch it.

Most of their documentary series in English are actually quite good. Their news coverage would appeal to the same demographic that would watch Current TV.

It is one of the free channels that is on my TV, Al Jazeera English and on a rare occasion, I watch to find news but it is badly slanted I am sure. I am not certain if I will get Al Jazeera America at no cost.

As previously posted…

“Al Jazeera Caught Airing Fake Death of Muslim Brotherhood Protestor
Network has been criticized for pro-MB slant”

But we already have CNN, MSNBC and Fox, all of which are profit based organizations that lean towards a certain agenda.

…So where will Al Jazeeras profits go? Surely thats the main reason they want these contracts -to make money. Do the profits go to the citizens of Qatar, or possibly to Islamist groups based in the Middle-East such as the Muslim Brotherhood? If so, I know I wouldn’t want to contribute to either of those.

…and what is their agenda? Are we to believe that this network will broadcast the one and only truly unbiased news? If they’re anything like the others, I doubt if we can count on that.

They almost certainly go to the monarch of Qatar, who is one of those figures who is neither entirely an absolute monarch nor a paragon of liberal democracy. One could call him an ‘enlightened despot’, and indeed Qatar is one of the more liberal states in the region. In a way the same kind of political authority a Franz Josef would have had in Austria under the dual monarchy.

And I never claimed they produced unbiased content. Their agenda is almost certainly based on Qatari national interest. When you hear of their criticism of autocratic policies, notice they never reference what goes on in Qatar.

I have monitored Al Jazeera English and also use Google translation tools to read Al Jazeera Arabic. I can testify that in the recent troubles in Egypt Al Jazeera is a cheerleader for the Muslim Brotherhood. It was so bad that they lost some of their reporters a few weeks ago: aawsat.net/2013/07/article55309195

You have to understand of course, why they take those positions. It is not because the Emir of Qatar wants a worldwide Caliphate or agrees with the Ikhwan. It is almost certainly because he believes the new government will act against the interests of his country and himself personally. Certainly he is no imitator of the House of Saud, in fact they detest him. He seems to believe with some reason that Morsi might be more amenable to his interests in the wider Arab world.

The Qatar Foundation (owned by the government of Qatar) has some pretty strong links to the Muslim Brotherhood, see:

Al Jazeera has also been the sounding board for the Muslim Brotherhood for years. See

Al Jazeera seems to have a pretty wide rogue’s gallery of proponents they have advocated for. See:

Although Qatar is now pulling back from the Muslim Brotherhood

Al Jazeera must be doing something right, there are complaints from many that Al Jazeera is Jewish controlled and spews Zionist propaganda :D.

Al Jazeera is much better than any mainstream news agency in North America IMHO. So while CNN is covering the royal baby every hour and Fox News is trying to proclaim Obama the Antichrist, I will be watching news about the floods in the Philippines and China, while having a in depth look into why the Egyptian army murders the press and its citizens.

I’ll agree that CNN, MSNBC, and FOX News have deteriorated to pointlessness.

I’ll add to that: NPR was on in my (sadly liberal) wife’s car yesterday afternoon, when the announcer during a break in the news broadcast said “NPR is supported by a grant from Al Jazeera USA.” It was a perfect moment. Even my wife didn’t have a snappy comeback after that. Laughed all the way home.

If nothing else, it should bring a fresh perspective. Between MSNBC’s relentless promotion of the pro-abortion, pro-homosexual agenda and Fox’s corporatist, militarist agenda, I think we need another voice.

The latter demonstrates that its stances are done in their rational interests. Almost Kissingerian.

I suppose you could call it fresh.
