"Thirty years ago, 90% of Brazilians called themselves Catholic. Now, this figure has dropped to 68%, the lowest since 1872. Alarm bells have started ringing because more and more people in the world’s largest Catholic country (140 million faithful), are severing their ties with Rome.

So much for a Latin America that was once a land of hope for global Catholicism. Today’s figures show quite the opposite. According to data published by the “Getulio Vargas” foundation, over the last decade, as a result of secularisation and the boom in evangelisation sects, the number of Brazilian Catholics is constantly falling, as dozens of evangelical denominations grow disproportionately. A study carried out on 200 thousand people by Brazil’s main research institute, portrays a progressive distancing, particularly of new generations, from the Catholic Church. "

And that is all true. I was just there last February and I can tell that the Church in Brasil has gone charismatics to gathering with protestants. the tv chanel supposedly Catholic, it is moving people away from the Catholic Faith. I was there and would not watch such a chanel. I am not surprised that this is happening, I was just wondering when the Vatican was going to accept this reality.

Yes, the evangelicals are on the prowl in a big way in the developing world. It really upsets me. :mad:
 
It is not their fault. Liberation theology is what has been tought. there isnt much difference between Catholics and protestants. the ecumenism took over and Catholic Faith has suffered.

There is a few reminants of Traditional Catholics who face great oppression by the others.

I was very saddening for what I saw, how the Faith had changed to be almost unrecognizable.

The destruction of the Faith is within and not without. Although protestants have succeeded in their indeavour somewhat, the destruction is within, that is why is so successfull. But like the holy father said, the Church will start over again in a small scale and will grow again.

I am not saying that protestantism have no hand on it, but them alone this damage would not have ocurred.
 
:tiphat:It’s because the Church doesn’t seem to go out of her way in those countries to teach the people their faith.If she in Mexico,latin and South America had worked really hard to explain the faith ,maybe these people wouldn’t join the protestant churches.
If we all studied our bibles as the evangelicals do, then we and they could refute protestant errors and defend our faith better.Also most of us here are educated.Lots of people throughout the region don’t have a good education,talking about the poor now, not the rich or middle class.

Evangelicals are not Protestants. They didn’t split from the Church like the Lutherans and Anglicans and Dutch Reformed and Calvinists did. They’re just creations of themselves, interpreting Scripture according to their individual lights - and wrongly.

Just as well. These people obviously never came to know Christ in the Catholic church. Let these groups give them some faith then maybe they’ll come back and help with the new evangelization.

This makes absolutely zero sense to me. You would desire they be taught faith by those whose faith is in error in glaring and fundamental ways. How would being filled with the wrong faith give them zeal to proclaim the Truth?

Catholics and Orthodox share a common faith. Lutherans and Episcopalians share some of our fundamentals but Evangelicals? Aside from believing in the Trinity and that Jesus is God we have little else in common.

Jesus and the Trinity are at least 90% of the faith. Better to be an on-fire evangelical than a lukewarm Catholic, I would guess. Just my opinion.

And wouldn’t it even be better if they were practicing Catholics?! The Church needs to be renewed in South America, and it will be.

The thing is, practicing catholics don’t usually leave the church. It’s usually people whose faith never meant anything to them as catholics. That’s the common story among catholics who convert away.
