Yeah and unfortunately now we know the character in Glengarry is real. You can’t close #%, you are #%, hit the bricks pal 'cause you are going out!

It’s a shameful time for him. It should not have been released to the public…would we want any of our messages, conversations or thoughts released to the public? Something to think about.

Let’s pray for his daughter, him and healing in that family.

I’m not at all bad tempered but my former husband was. Living with him was a hell on earth. I’ll pray for the daughter, and pray that someone hits Baldwin with a clue by four and gets him into anger management. Or better yet, church.

This poor girl is being used and abused as a pawn in her parents’ fight. We need to keep her in our prayers. He is a pathetic man - has a much higher opinion of himself and his intellect than he needs to. Remember - he was the one who was going to move out of the country if George Bush was elected. Too bad he didn’t pack his bags a few years ago.

Have you all head this recording of Alec Baldwin insulting and swearing at his 11 year old daughter on a phone message? I felt absolutely sickened listening to it.
foxnews.com/story/0,2933,267302,00.html

His response?

Not to worry? Are you kidding me? Lose your patience? I have an eleven year old daughter and I can not in a million fathom speaking to her in such a way.
You can listen to the actual audio on the Fox News link -it’s absolutely chilling and disgusting.
You know I’m almost scared to post this here since I know I will probably get flamed for doing so, But really, he had some valid points.
If you listen to the phone call, he was obviously upset because as he mentions this is not the first time this has happened. Admittedly he should not have lost his temper, however I can understand the feeling behind it. You can hear in his voice that this man is totally frustrated, that he is trying like hell to talk to his daughter at the “specified” times that he is allowed to and that he is bending over backwards to make sure he is able to make the call and she is not availible to take it.
Everything he said is true, he tells her exactly how her behavior makes him feel, although I do believe callign her a Rude Little Pig was over the line.

In reality he is not allowed to contact the home or Kim Bassinger directly so calling the house and asking to speak to his daughter is forbidden by court order. That’s why the cell phone was set up for her and he was given time in which he could call his daughter.
It seems more abhorent that the person out of all of this who should be protecting her daughter is most likely the one who leaked this tape out to the public.
From my point of view, she did the far worse of the two since that took cold calculating vindictive thought. She knew that the media would eat this **** up and what affect it might have on her daughter and did it anyway to get back at her ex… That is by far the worse of the two offenses.
The father was upset, he was justified in being upset, however his execution was poor.

There is no excuse for the mother’s behavior.

I know, I heard it on the tv today. It’s really physicaly sickening to hear a father talk to his child like that. I mean, as an 11 year old gilr, how must she feel to have her father say such awful things to her? I wouldn’t want to be alone with my father after something like that.
It’s very sad.
For the record, i’ve had far worse things said to me in the heat of an argument between my mother and I, including that I should have been an abortion…

Sometimes, parents say things that they don’t mean… The important things are what they do to rectify them afterward. I know there are many hurtful things that my mother AND father have said and done to me when I was younger, but I also know they loved me and love me still. They were sorry they said them as soon as it was said, but sometimes it matters more what is done to heal the hurt than anything.
Both my mother and father have made sure that I knew that they were truly sorry about what they had said, admitted they were wrong and gave a heartfelt appology. Once that was cleared up, we could discuss the situation in a rational and constructive manner. Things I could do to eliviate the frustration and things they could do to understand my needs better and what communication works best.
I have to say, I have the closest relationship with my parents than anyone else I know.
They were wrong to say those things to me. I was wrong to keep testing the limits.
There are no excuses for either of our behaviors. I knew at 11 years old that I was pushing the limits and knew full well the wrath that I could incure and did it anyway.
My behavior was just as bad as their’s

I really disagree with you here. There was no reason for him to be so enraged, other than he wants to be in complete control over his daughter. OK, so he has a specified time that he can call her. I’m assuming the point of the phone call is to keep a close and loving relationship with his daughter, not to hold her hostage to having to take his phone calls at a specific time. I ran into this same problem with my ex husband. He had requested a specific time that he would call the kids every night, and he literally expected each and every kid to be there each and every night when he called. It was not acceptable to him that they would accept invitations from friends to spend the night or go to a movie. He called and was incredibly irate that my son couldn’t talk to him because he was earning his swimming merit badge, and since he was having some difficulty, his time at the pool ran longer than we had expected. If it was up to him, my son would have had to just quit and take his call.

What Alec Baldwin needs to realize is that his daughter is not a possession. She is a little girl with a life, and if he wants to be an important part of her life, he needs to treat her with dignity and respect. If the point of his phone call was to connect with his daughter, then that really backfired. All that he needed to do was leave a friendly message, and she would have called him back. I have always asked my kids to call their dad back if they miss a call from him, but even so that does not satisfy the requirements of someone is more interested in control than love.

For the record I have been at the receiving end of comments like that. In fact my mother once told me she wished I would have died instead of my sister. It was a horrible thing to say and it was extremely painful thing for a 13 year old to hear. I don’t care if I was the most horribly behaved child (which I wasn’t) there is no excuse what so ever for saying such things to a child. An 11 year old girl is not an adult, she is a child. An a child should never hear such things comes out of their parents mouths and an adult should absolutely know better-period. No excuses.

I love my parents and I know they love me -but at the age of thirteen I thought my mother hated me. No child should ever feel that. I swore I would never ever make my daughter feel the way my mother made me feel. I am an adult, I need to be in control of my words and emotions when dealing with my child. Verbal abuse can be just as scarring as physical abuse. Would you defend him if he beat her and then told her how sorry he was afterward and how he loved her?

He made a mistake and regrets it. It should remain a private matter.

Why did the mother leak this?
I totally disagree with what the father said to his daughter and there is NO EXCUSE what so ever to lose your temper to that magnatude. There is such a thing as self control.

As far as the mother goes, she probably felt that this was the only way to change things, that she felt were never going to change. My sister is also having some custody issues and there are times where the father treats the child horribly behind close doors and tells the mother. The mother may feel helpless and unable to do anything about it. The kids can see a counselor, but if there is shared parenting, the father as the right to refuse his permission for the counselor to disclose anything in court. She could report him to child services and probably has and nothing gets done. I am not saying what she did is right, but she may have been desperate to protect her child from abuses that they only know of and wanted the judge to hear how he could be. Mind you all she had to do is submit the recording to the judge himself, but again depending on her experience, he may not do anything about it. We don’t know the whole story behind why she chose to tell everyone about this man and allow us all to hear what he said. Her daughter probably heard the message when they got home and since she heard it already, she decided to make it public.

I know that when my sister had no help from the state from the abuses of her ex to her children, I emailed a person who handles child abuse and she told me that if we had any recording of the ex or words the kids say to make them public locally and that the outrage of the people may help my sister get heard by the right people. This is from a professional and how she said things needed to be since there was no laws really protecting the children from verbal abuses. Maybe this is why the mother did leak it to the press. I don’t know and only she knows why.

I’m not sure if this was directed at me or not, I’ll assume so since it is in line with my previous post. I also agree thatVerbal abuse is just as damaging as physical abuse, however please tell me exactly what you had a problem with with this man’s comments. He was right to be upset. It is no secret that this divorce has been a long drawn out mess and that there has always been a custody issue to contend with. Unfortunately this poor girl is caught in the middle. That does not give her the right, however to be rude and thoughtless and insensative. At 11 years old, you should know better or at least your parents have a duty to start teaching you to know better.
As a parent Alec should have known better as well. We all make mistakes, it’s how we make amends and move on from there that makes a difference.
There is obviously more to this story than we are priveleged to
and it is not up to us to judge the whole situation based on one voicemail message from an obviously frustrated and upset father.

Alec did not say anything earthshatteringly (is that a word?) bad. HE called his daughter on her inappropriate behavior. Yes I can understand that life gets in the way and sometimes you cannot be availible to make certain commitments, however according to his words, this was a habitual thing. He called her twice a day and she consistantly did not have her phone on, which is the only way for him to contact her. I do consider that to be rude and thoughtless, especially when it’s obvious that this man cares enough to stop what he is doing and have a whole team of people stop doing what they are doing so that he can speak with his daughter.

Again, there is more to the situation than we can ever know, but just by going by his words, he expressed his feelings. This is how he feels. I know from my own experience, I used to do the same thing to my father, until one day I had a similar experience. He was angry with me because he would constantly call and leave messages for me to call him back and I never would because I was angry with him or busy with something else I thought was more important. It wasn’t until he called me and told me how upset it made him and how it made him feel that I started to realise, hey my dad has feelings too and I need to take that into consideration as well.
I never did that to him again after that conversation. I learned that some things are uncaceptable and from that moment on, whenever he called and I wasn’t availible, I made sure that I called him back as soon as possible and let him know what was going on and when I could talk to him, I aslo made damn sure that when I told him I was availible, that I was.

His message was not verbally abusive, He did not say he wished she would die, or that he never wanted to speak to her or that she is a piece of ****. He stated how he felt. He went a little far with calling her a rude pig, but I understand the reference. Pigs have no manners, they have no consideration, they are just animals and take care of only their own needs. Thats how he felt she was behaving.
I also think that the conversation would have gone alot differently if it were a conversation and not just a voicemail left on her phone. Most likely he would not have gotten himself all worked up like that because it would have been a two sided conversation.
There is more I would like to write, but honestly it is late and I have to get up at 4:30am so I will end my response here for now and would be happy to continue the conversation in more detail tomorrow.

Ha … i didn’t even notice the screen name hehe.
Basically Rayne 89 and I (Rayne 100) disagree on most topics…
That should clear it up for you.

Rayne100 maybe you should listen to it again. Here’s an unsensored version from youtube. You are telling me this is not verbal abuse? Maybe you heard it so much as a kid it seems normal to you. This is not normal parental behavior. I have an 11 year old, she would be devastated beyond words if I spoke to her this way.

He calls his daughter “a rude, thoughtless little pig” He says “You don’t have the brains or the decency as a human being…” And he’s swearing at her. This is abusive. If a teacher spoke to a child like this they would be fired. Just because someone is angry or frustrated with a child’s behavior it is not ok to behave this way.

And basically implied she was a piece of **** as you put it.
what is emotional abuse?
There is no universally accepted definition of emotional abuse. Like other forms of violence in relationships, emotional abuse is based on power and control. The following are widely recognized as forms of emotional abuse:
rejecting
  • refusing to acknowledge a person’s presence, value or worth; communicating to a person that she or he is useless or inferior; devaluing her/his thoughts and feelings. Example: repeatedly treating a child differently from siblings in a way that suggests resentment, rejection or dislike for the child.
degrading
  • insulting, ridiculing, name calling, imitating and infantilizing; behaviour which diminishes the identity, dignity and self-worth of the person. Examples: yelling, swearing, publicly humiliating or labelling a person as stupid; mimicking a person’s disability; treating a senior as if she or he cannot make decisions.

I just listened to the entire phone message. I can see why this girl ignores her father’s phone calls. Why would she want to talk to an abusive SOB such as this Alec Baldwin?

I’m going to be in the minority of this, but having watched calculating 10 and 11 year olds do things to their parents or other adults that it takes the patience of Job to maintain self control… I am on the fence about who I think is “wrong” in this situation.

Yes, children shouldn’t be tied to the phone to receive phone calls from their parent, but at the same time, it seems as if this girl refused to return ANY calls to her father. If she was so “indisposed” when the scheduled time came up, she should have had the decency to call her father ahead of time or afterward to let him know what was up. So I can understand his anger in this situation.

I believe he owes his daughter a sincere apology, but I think there is more to this story that is underneath it all than what we’re seeing. And yes, I’ve certainly been that angry that I wanted to scream and shout like that. I’ve even cleared off my dining room table twice because my 7 year old angered me to the point that I had some rage boiling (she got sent to her room before this happened). Do I want to hurt her? No. Do I need anger management classes? No. Kids will and can enrage parents and an 11 year old will not be damaged for being called a brat if she truly is a brat (or selfish, rotten pig in this case).

Like I said, I know I’m in the minority but that’s ok. It’s all a horrible situation for everyone involved (except the person that released this audio… that’s one cold hearted person that glorified in another human’s misery)

If this girl is messed up, her parents have done it to her. Would you really leave a message like that? One thing’s for sure, money and success don’t buy happiness. Alec Baldwin is a lowlife.

I agree that if this girl is messed up, it’s her parents fault. But where does the line get drawn that the girl KNOWS what she’s doing and purposely doesn’t thinks to anger her folks? I’m just saying that there is more to this story that what we see and to not just dismiss the 11 yr old as a perfectly innocent angel. I know for a fact that some 11 yr olds can be more calculating than a snake. 😦

disclaimer… I can’t stand Alec Baldwin for his political views so please don’t think I believe he’s totally innocent and perfect either. :o

Doctor Laura would be wondering why he’s living so far from his daughter. He has a lot of nerve to expect her to hop to. He’s probably rained his verbal abuse down on the family for years. The guy is totally out of control, apparently.

I get that the child may have a pattern of disrespect -but she is still a child. How is being disrespectful and down right insulting back especially coming from an adult and her father no less going to teach her anything?

Would we be having this conversation if the abuse was physical? If he punched her or kicked her would that be ok since she was being disrespectful?

My husband was an abused kid growing up and I can tell he remembers the words more than the beatings. Disrespect from a child does not justify verbal abuse from a parent any more than it justify’s physical abuse.

What if your husband said these words to you? How would that feel? Imagine how much more painful it would be for a child.

Personally it sounds like Mr. Baldwin is frustrated with his ex-wife and is taking it out on his child.
