And there aren’t that many FUN threads in this folder!

It may be a strange thread but it’s resulted in some thought provoking responses.
Yes. A little levity can be a good thing.

Case in point, amid our discussion of extradimensional cephalopods and their sushi, we’ve had some thought-provoking arguments about what constitutes an immortal soul and what, if any, non-human life forms could receive grace in the same way as we do.

Exactly.

Debates about traditional Catholicism --which might become too heated when limited to our fellow earth natives (I hope we are all humans…)-- can remain civil when it is obvious that the discussion is intended to be somewhat humorous.

And I do see a problem.

We don’t know whether aliens should be received into the Roman Church when baptized.

If aliens would normally be received into one of the other 22 Catholic Churches then this thread needs to be moved to the Eastern Catholicism folder.
Martian Rite Catholics? Make a 24th Church?

Generally, all lands not part of the traditional east belong to the Romans. Including China and Japan. So… Roman would be the default. But they could request to be received into any of the Churches sui iuris…

If these aliens are Moon Men, then it likely that they would be received as Latin Rite Catholics subject to the Bishop of Orlando

Sometimes it is said that the Diocese of Orlando, Florida, has jurisdiction over the Moon.
ā€œBut Father! But Father!ā€, some of you are saying now. ā€œOrlando? Why? Because of Disneyworld? Have you finally lost your mind? ā€
Not quite completely.
The idea is that, back in 1969 when Apollo 11 landed on the Moon, the Diocese of Orlando included Cape Canaveral. Because the journey began from the Diocese of Orlando, Orlando had jurisdiction.

Well it’s good to know that this thread is right where it belongs! 😃

No controversy at all. Only humans and angels have IMMORTAL souls. Other living things have souls that die with the living thing.

In Latin ā€œAnimaā€ means breath or soul.

Where does the word ā€œanimalā€ come from?
animal (n.)
early 14c. (but rare before c.1600, and not in KJV, 1611), ā€œany living creatureā€ (including humans), from Latin animale ā€œliving being, being which breathes,ā€ neuter of animalis ā€œanimate, living; of the air,ā€ from anima ā€œbreath, soul; a current of airā€ (see animus, and compare deer). Drove out the older beast in common usage. Used of brutish humans from 1580s.

I love the Holy Father’s use of unforgettable hyperbole (and one which recalls to mind C.S. Lewis’ essay on the subject in ā€œOf Other Worldsā€).
Though, of course, one would have to get permission from the Oyarsa of Malacandra . . .
