Ridley Scott directed the first Alien movie, a classic.

Aliens 2 was great.

Aliens 3 was not what i hoped for.

…and every alien film after that has been mediocre at best.

Whats going on?

And its not just alien movies its all movies these days. Most of them seem to be mediocre.

I don’t know about the Alien films so much but a lot of other movies tend to rely more on explosions than decent script and plot layering. There are good movies around. Star Wars has kept on producing good films although maybe it doesn’t contain some of the old spark that it used to.

Much stuff coming out of the film industry these days is tripe but there are some decent films here and there if you look for them and I put this down largely to a lack of Christian principle in films. Much of it is more superficial. The same goes for Star Trek.

What other movies did you have in mind that you find disappointing?

Well if you don’t mind me saying all the new superman movies are poo.

DC is having a terrible time.

You are correct in pointing out that allot of the films now lack substance. Perhaps they are a bit nihilistic or lack Christian principles as you say.

Definitely nihilistic. Many films have always engaged in the subject of good vs evil yet recently many films the line between good and bad is not clear enough. So many revenge movies out there. Where the good guy is really not a good guy but in fact is a really bad guy.

I thought the face of Superman was quite realistic but I only watched the first of the new ones, years ago, and it wasn’t that interesting. The old Superman movies were something I remember getting excited about watching.

The newish Star Trek Beyond was really lacking in substance, which I thought was a shame, as the first one or two were pretty good.

Do you like Batman? Not sure whether it was you who posted a while ago saying you weren’t keen?! Also, the Amazing Spiderman?

Have you seen any of the comic series adventures on cable (which can be rented on DVD)?

This is true

That shouldn’t be a surprise considering the director was the same guy who directed fast and furious lol. The old star trek films where deep and philosophical. The humanity of the crew shined through warts and all. Even the subject of suffering and pain is explored. Even God.

I like the batman games beginning with asylum, but i am not too keen with the Nolan movies.

I have watched some of the animated movies which i think are good.

I watched Batman: Gotham Knight which i think is a good anime adaption.

The quality of movies has been going downhill for quite some time. As another
poster said - no substance. They get so much money to make the movies, but
they seem to put the money in the wrong place. You need a good plot and good
character development and good acting by recognizable stars. The most recent
Alien movie was bad, it could have been worse, but it wasn’t anywhere near the
caliber of the first Alien or even the second.

Alien 2 (aliens) was bar far the best one of the franchise. Alien 1. Was second, resurrection was ok. Thre rest were trash.
They are just video game marketing now.

Well, when it comes to the Alien franchise, at least when it comes to the more recent films is that they want to try to go into the origin of the creature… And I feel that’s a bad idea. Part of the reason why the xenomorph was such a terrifying thing was because it was so alien. Making us more familiar with it sort of takes away its power…

And the problems with the DC films were Zack Synder. Dude has some pretty good cinematography, but comes off like a 13-year old kid who wants to make everything dark and edgy.

I mean, this is a guy who basically said that Christopher Nolan’s Batman films were dark because Batman didn’t get sexually assaulted while in prison in the beginning of Batman Begins and said he didn’t care about comic books until the Watchman… Not because it showed that comics could be a serious medium and it was an intresting deconstruction of what superheroes might be like if they existed in the real world… But because it had sex and violence.

I mean, at the very least that’s not the sort of dude that should be doing a Superman movie.

I thought Wonder Woman was actually pretty good.Prior to this year DC was really struggling though for sure.
Marvel has been going pretty strong. I thought the latest Spider-man was a lot of fun as a light hearted superhero film.

Among many other things, lack of originality. Franchises are being milked and stretched to death. Digital special effects are being substituted for plot, character development, believable dialog, and good acting.

Yeah, I thought it was pretty good as well. It wasn’t just mindless explosions.

There are plenty of good movies these days. The nostalgia lovefest gets a little tiresome after a while.

All the characters make stupid decisions. The Christian Character is made out to be an insensitive fool. There is a direction in the original 2 Alien movies that is lacking in Covenant. As one poster pointed out, the mystery of the alien is destroyed and this makes the alien less threatening, almost kinda boring. And the whole idea that David the robot is the creator of the alien species is an underwhelming proposition. And the twist at the end was seen from a mile away. and they killed Elisabeth Shaw the only interesting character compared to the Characters in covenant.

The Movie should have been called “David”, not alien.

Prometheus was okay, although that had its problems too.

Yep. CGI can be good for somethings but i miss movies that use practical effects.

The Christian Character is made out to be an insensitive fool.
No, he isn’t. At least I didn’t think so. He looks like a person struggling with the burden of leadership in an insanely stressful situation who is desperately trying to protect his crew. At least, that was my read of the character.

I’m sorry, but the woman’s husband just got burned alive in front of her, and she isn’t even given a chance to give him a send off. She has to go behind his back with the other crew members to space her husband. The film is clearly implying that the Christian dude is more concerned with his own ability to control the situation than the actual morale and emotional state of his crew. Then he has the cheek to complain that the crew does not respect him. The film clearly implies that he is insensitive.

And why is he a fool you may ask? David the robot is clearly insane and dangerous, he has David bang to rights. When he realized that David was creating the very same creatures that was killing his crew, he should have shot him dead. What does he do instead? He puts his face in an alien egg!!!

100% Agreed

LOL

👍 No he shouldn’t. I reckon Steven Spielberg would make an amazing superman movie.

You make some good points. I agree with what another poster said about the Christian guy only lacking in leadership ability, and not being a bad guy overall. After all, when it came down to it, he put a few holes into the alien when he could. As for leaning over eggs, that’s pretty much the hallmark of these movies.

What I liked: the action occasionally stopped long enough for the characters to have conversations that mattered. What I didn’t: David’s personality underwent a pretty dramatic change between the last two films, no? Also, I was looking forward to contact with the originals that went beyond destroying them. I feel that was an interesting thread that got snipped.

Alien, Aliens and Alien VS Predator were good movies the rest were complete trash. After sitting through Prometheous I’ll never go see another it was horrible.

Hollywood doesn’t like going out on limb they prefer to stay with safe plot devices and originality is off the table so now they just want to try remakes all the time or the money goes to CGI. I can’t stand a movie that is all CGI. They irritate the hell out of me. Also Hollywood is mostly Godless and going further to the far left all the time and so their slanted world view effects their subject matter and plots. They refuse to learn that lessons that decent money making movies try to teach them such as Wonder Woman. Make a good movie that doesn’t try to preach but tells a good story and doesn’t rely 80% on CGI and you will get the crowds. They also don’t market movies or give bad press and hype to any movie that doesn’t fit into their ideas or world view. I use rottentomatoes.com for my movie choices as you can see what movie goers really have to say about a movie. Sometimes the rating differences between professional review and movie goers are very telling.
