I would like to discuss in this thread **all **about the SDA religion. How it started, what the beliefs are, scriptural evidence, etc. Also, I am open to answering questions to the best of my humble ability by fellow SDA protestants.

I would like to discuss things like Sabbath Vs. Sunday. & why.
So SDAs truly believe in the divinity of Jesus
Purgatory, soul sleep, etc.
Who really did start the SDA religion. Why? (Ex: Martin Luther started the Lutheran Church because he saw that there were errors in the Catholic Church. [Mr. Luther was Catholic beforehand])

We can start off with authority.
Apostolic Succession. Head of the Church, etc.

May God help us all in this thread to peacefully discuss and hopefully find the one and only truth/faith.

Ok so I have been thinking about the beggining of the SDA Church.

I want to clarify a bit: When Miller thought that the second coming of Jesus to cleanse the sanctuary (the earth) was in 1843/44 he was using the prophecies of Daniel in Dan 8 and 7? and if so, which verses exactly. I have an idea, but not 100% sure. Also, when Jesus didn’t come, Mr. Edson believed he had received a revelation that the date was wrong and the event was wrong, correct? So the correct event for the date was that Jesus wasn’t coming here to cleanse the earth, but was going into the holy of holies to cleanse that instead? Please let me know if this is correct, and if so where do SDAs believe this from?

Thanks!

Dan. 8:[14] And he said unto me, Unto two thousand and three hundred days; then shall the sanctuary be cleansed.

Miller used a day-for-year principle, and anchored the 2,300 years on 457 BC, when the order went out from the king of Persia to rebuild the temple in Jerusalem. When nothing happened in 1843, Miller realized that there was no year zero (the timeline went from 1BC directly to 1AD) so he was off by twelve months. When nothing happened in 1844, they poured over the book of Hebrews and came up with the idea that what Jesus did in 1844 was enter the heavenly “Holy of Holies” and started going through everyone’s dossiers. They call this the Investigative Judgment, but it’s very similar to what the Jehovah’s Witnesses did in 1914 when Jesus did not return as predicted…they simply maintain he returned in an invisible way. The idea that Miller might have erred is never entertained.

Do you know where in the book of hebrews-and is this where they get their idea for their investigative judgement?

Thank you for starting the thread. I am a SDA for 2. 5 years . Your last statement is sincere… may the Holy Spirit open our hearts and minds and allow the truth of His word be made known.

The SDA believes that the one and only true faith is that by the grace of God we will be saved by faith in Jesus Christ. No mater what we do, whatever “works” we do , we can never do anything ourselves to be saved, it is a gift from God.
Jesus Christ is the head of the church. The only authority of the SDA is that of the bible. No one person has authority over the church.

So if your only authority is the Bible. Where did the SDA get the Bible from? Sorry if this is off topic but I would like to know these things considering this denomination started in the mid 1800s by another man named Miller.

I’m eager to hear BTTG’s or another SDA’s response because it doesn’t make sense to me why it would be attractive to embrace a faith that was resently created by a man who interpreted the Bible which was written & compiled by the Catholic Church established by our Lord & Savior Jesus Christ.

I’m sure it makes perfect sense to SDA’s and I’d like to understand from their point of view too.

I was always curious about something. I think we all know that the SDA church believes that Saturday worship is mandated by the bible and I’m only slightly less certain that we all know what you think of Sunday worship. But there is a church near me that gathers on Wednesdays - just Wednesdays, not other days - for worship. It seems, also, to be growing in popularity to gather on Wednesdays.

Since Wednesday is neither the Sabbath, nor the Sunday “mark”, does the SDA church have any teaching regarding it?

If the bible is your only guide, then what exactly is the role of Ellen White as the “spirit of prophecy”?

when do SDAs celebrate Easter? The bible says it was **early in the morning on the FIRST DAY OF THE WEEK **when the women arrived bringing spices to anoint the body. Most calendars have SUNDAY as the first day of the week. The day before had been the Jewish Sabbath. So, did Jesus rise on a Sunday or another day?

Then why does Ellen WHite say in various places that “not one in twenty” and “not one in a hundred” Christians will be saved?

No problem-Let’s talk about what you said:
  1. Salvation by faith, not works
Do you mean as long as a person has faith, even with his/her sins that person will be saved?
  2. JC head of the church
Yes he is. But do you also mean to say no one else is head of the church like #4 below?
  3. Sola scriptura
Only the bible is the source of your faith?
4.No one person has authority over the church.
Do you mean no 1 person has authority, or noone besides JC has authority?

I think number 3 is the first one to talk about here since the other points I would rather be sure what you are saying.

Sola scriptura: So no traditions, no nothing else.
I know you have heard before about 2 thess 2:15:
then, brothers, stand firm and hold to the teachingsc we passed on to you, whether by word of mouth or by letter.
What is your take on this?

Also, where does the SDA church believe in Sola scriptura from? I’m sure since you believe in the bible alone, then from the bible you must have found that it is only the bible alone that you must refer to.

Let me know your thoughts and if you can please clarify your intentions from topics #1, 2, and 4 above so we may open discussion.

God bless.

Then why does Ellen WHite say in various places that “not one in twenty” and “not one in a hundred” Christians will be saved?
What does “not one in twenty” and “not one in a hundred” Christians will be saved? What is she trying to say?

What she is saying is that very, very, very few Church going, God professing Christians will be saved.

**Response - I am not familiar with the phrase that you are quoting. Would you please provide what writings of Helen White the quotes are from. Thank you.

**Thank you for your question. Please don’t take me wrong, but many people are mis-informed, as I was before I became a SDA, that Mr. Miller was the founder of the SDA movement. Mr. Miller was not a SDA, he was a Baptist. He was not a Sabbath(Saturday) keeping person. In 1844 there were many denominations, including Catholics who believed that the 2nd comming of Jesus was to take place in 1844. At least 5 different faiths formed the SDA.

**That’s interesting… the SDA has no observance of Wednesday. Hey , if you decide to ask someone attending that Wednesday church, on why they worship on Wednesdays I would be interested to know.

You make an interesting statement on the “mark” of Sunday.

**Yes, Jesus was crucified on Friday ( preparation day) rested on the Sabbath and rose on Sunday. SDA do not celebrate Easter, we do observe the Lord’s supper throughout the year. I have no problem with people observing a day when Christ was resurrected. However, there is nothing in scripture that states we have to celebrate Easter, or a specific day of the year for Christ’s resurrection. Not to be smart but I don’t think Jesus would accept us celebrating “Easter” , Anglo-Saxon meaning " Eastre", the goddess of spring/reproduction, in whose honor a festival was celebrated at the time vernal equinox.
I quote…“The First Council of Nicaea (325) established the date of Easter as the first Sunday after the full moon (the Paschal Full Moon) following the northern hemisphere’svernal equinox.” This is why the dating of Easter can be observed within five weeks, and not on the same Sunday every year.

You see, Easter has nothing to do with the resurrection of our Lord.
