Since I can remember all parishes where I live have always had the tradition of little envelopes containing the names of the deceased to place on the altar for the 30 days of masses for the holy souls.
One parish no longer has this tradition since the priest does not provide the envelopes, but does keep the holy day of obligation for All Saints.

Another parish is celebrating all three, 31st 1st and 2nd. (and provides envelopes)

So would the 1st (all saints) be the one day that combines all three so to speak? And should the priest provide envelopes for people to list their dead and be remembered throughout November?

Thanks.

The intentions are remembered even without “little envelopes”.

We have a large book that we write the names on. But it still would not matter. Your intentions are your intentions. They don’t have to be broadcast.

Even if there were envelops, I don’t know of any parish that opens them and reads them.

You maybe right about the book, I think there maybe one at the side of the altar, just can’t recall what is written in it.
The envelops are also for an offering,so they are opened to collect monies.

Apparently one parish does read out all the names, I’ll assume so many are read out at each mass during november.

So I think that if there is a book with the names in then they would be counted, especially if the deceased in there have no-one to pray for them.

Thanks.

Our parish has a memorial Mass for all those parishioners who died during the past year. As long as I have been a parishioner we have never placed envelopes with names on them at the altar.

Thanks,

Must be different traditions held around the world. 👍

Thinking. in ourcathedral they have a big notice board behind a side altar with the name sof local folk who have died each month

and a special section for all stillborn and neonatal deaths

Will look next time I am in town,

as a young person in my Anglican church, we woudl send names to the vicar and they would be read out at communion … I remember sending my brother.s name in

Oh and another church here has real leaves that you write the names on and hang them on a tree branch there,

I heard about the names on leaves from a poster on here, I think that’s a lovely idea.

This year for All Souls we had a Solemn High Mass (Extraordinary Form) at our evening Mass. We had collected envelopes the days prior with names of the deceased of our friends and families. These were placed on the Altar during the first morning low Mass.

It’s interesting to me how we all have different ways in our church of celebrating All souls.
