We were told this story at the end of our RCIA:
"Up north there was a small little town that was mostly populated by middle upper class white folks who all attended the sensible Protestant church off of Main street. They were Christian - read their Bible and studied it, enjoyed each other’s company but their entire church was built on sensibly interpreting the Bible. There was also a small Mexican population who attended the one Catholic Church. They were regarded as unintelligent and superstitious by the Protestants who didn’t understand why those Catholics had those beads, statues, and candles.
Well one day a tragedy occured. One of the Protestant families son was found dead due to drug overdose. There was a scandal, and as casserol dishes were sent to the family the family’s friends still pulled away. They had their own busy lives and didn’t want their children to get mixed up into whatever obvious sin that family had been involved in. One day as the mother of the dead son was walking down the road a young Mexican girl stopped and said “I thought you aught to know that my mother lights a candle for your son every morning and prays for his soul” and walked on.
The mother stopped in her tracks. These people who she had always looked down on, who she had called superstitious and ignorant were praying for her son. She had never met them, but they still showed more kindness to her family then their old friends. Within a week she and her husband were at the Catholic church, and at the next Easter Vigil the were Confirmed"
The point was that we had studied a lot of apologetics in our RCIA, but that we had to remember that sometimes it is just being kind and showing people the love of Christ that will actually win them over. Sometimes we think that pure apologetics and reason might win people over and forget to reflect the love of Christ, but we must do both.
That just reminded me of that. Sorry for the OT
