Mammals, avians, and anything else that is warm blooded. Exceptions for aquatic mammals are local only. Unfortunately even Christendoms most strict rules of abstinence from meat don’t ban shellfish, so crawfish boils (read: parties) are still acceptable. Remember the words of President Grover Cleveland, “No man has ever yet been hanged for breaking the spirit of a law.”
Yeah but crawfish boils aint much of a true fast or penance is it though.

Mais non, mon frere! il n’est pas.

(Did I say it right? I’m struggling through Monsignor Jules Daigle’s Cajun self taught, but it seems to assume a background in continental French that I do not have.)

Pretty good mon ami ( I hope cause if I got this wrong it would be embarrassing)

All the more reason for me to hunt down crocodiles! I’ll start getting me a gun and a small ship. After all, saltwater crocodiles are common. 🙂
Do watch out for the Cuban one! I heard they are the only kind that can really actually jump high!!! 👍

They do taste like chicken!

I was always taught to try something before turning it down. Like it or not, alligator is accepted as a food down south. There is certainly plenty of it. I’m sure that there are foods that are quite ordinary to American’s in general, but would shock the conscience of someone from say Europe. Be that as it may, glad to see a conscientious Catholic took the time to get the clarification, rather than making assumptions.
The Bible forbids the consumption of alligator and most reptiles, therefore in what way could this be allowed on Lent?

US Catholics free to eat alligator this Lent
By CAROLINE ZABOREK on Tuesday, 11 March 2014

This Lent US Catholics are free to eat alligator after the support given
last year by US bishops’ conference to the Archbishop of New
Orleans, who said that it was permissible.

Parishioner Jim Piculas sent Archbishop Gregory M Aymond a letter in
2010 in order to settle a debate between his friends. In the letter he asked the archbishop if alligator meat was acceptable to eat on
Lenten Fridays, when many US Catholics traditionally abstain from
eating meat.

Piculas posted the Archbishop’s reply on Facebook last month and
the message went viral. Archbishop Aymond said: “God has created a
magnificent creature that is important to the state of Louisiana and it
is considered seafood.”

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops posted a message
on its website entitled ‘Lent and Lenten Practices’ in support of
Archbishop Aymond’s statement. “Abstinence laws consider that meat
comes only from animals such as chickens, cows, sheep or pigs – all
of which live on land. Birds are also considered meat… Fish are a
different category of animal. Salt and freshwater species of fish,
amphibians, reptiles, (cold-blooded animals) and shellfish are
permitted,” it said.

In accordance with this statement, Catholic can, if they wish, also
consume turtles, snakes, lizards, and tortoises on Lenten Fridays.
Alligator is a delicacy of Louisiana where it is often served deep-fried,
in sandwiches, and even in cheesecake.

🙂 happy Southern Catholic 👍

“OHHHHH! MAY I? (What about frogs?”)

Just remembered Steve Martin’s angry waiter line from the Muppet Movie when I saw the title of this thread. Lol.

Stockin’ up on frozen 'gator for next Lent fer sure.

Why not Turtle Soup too while we are casting tradition onto the asheap of history? 😉

(Sick of Mock Turtle soup and the non-alcoholic beer I chase it with. Lent is hell)

WHOOPS! Addition - didn’t see this:

Best eaten while watching reruns of the Munsters or the Addams Family for ambiance.
