I don’t believe the approving of vesture is a parish level thing.Lawfully approved vesture could be a nice shirt and tie, depending on the parish. Beats the shorts, t-shirt, ankle socks and oxfords worn by one woman who serves at the altar in our parish during the summer.
I talked to the director of my Office of worship today, and he said that right now in the US, the only real options are:
a) alb
b) Cassock and surplice (he thinks this is by far the best, and nicest looking option)
c) a habit (for religious) and surplice (if appropriate with habit. Depends on the habit design, but it works for most habits.)
He said that was the practical definition of lawfully approved vesture for the US at this time.
One other thing. Both the cassock and surplice are distinctively male clothing, which makes it inappropriate for females to wear either of them at any time, particularly when assisting at Mass. It’s akin to a man wearing a dress. When females serve, they should wear albs, which are gender neutral.
