As a musician who plays at mass (flute), I ask everyone to please remember that there is a person, a fellow Catholic, behind the instrument…and they came to mass to play for God, to use the talent He gave them to glorify Him, and to play for the congregation-to (hopefully) add to/facilitate their communion with God.
I know that the quality of music, and how it matches a person’s tastes can really make or break a mass, but if the music stinks, remember that the musicians’ hearts are in the right place…and they’re trying!!! I know I’ve had masses where I wanted to get up in the front and appologize for that one note that was so so wrong! It takes some guts to perform every week (sometimes in front of a ‘rough crowd’)!
Your musicians are part of the community, and part of the Church, though maybe not part of the Symphony!
As for alternate instruments, if I played one, and wanted to share my gift at mass, I hope I’d be welcome, and I’d try to be part of the group-- blend in and compliment the existing group…but sometimes getting an E for effort is all I can ask for!
