Am I being unreasonable?

Am I being unreasonable to want him to live with only guys? To think it’s wrong to live with women who are not family?

I ask this because I know I’m frustrated right now and I don’t want to take it out on him. (Long story short, because he had a shot at the dream job, I moved three states away from home and family to try to find a job near him. I can’t find anything in my field and will probably have to take a stop-gap job and commute an hour and a half each way to make ends meet. So when he argues for this apartment because it means a ten minute commute, as opposed to a 20 minute , I get a little annoyed.)

Thanks for listening to my vent.

no I don’t think you are being unreasonable, it is simply not an acceptable living arrangment IMO. Maybe building where there are separate flats, but not this. However what does seem to be unreasonable that without any sign of commitment–at least you don’t state it–no engagement, no marriage plans, you are expected to disrupt your life for him, yet he cannot comply with a simple reasonable request regarding living arrangments. If you were a young lady in my family asking for advice I would advise you to listen a lot more attentively to the signals he is giving out, becasue it sounds like he is distancing himself from you from where I sit. Just going by the face of what you say it sounds like you each have very different ideas about your relationship and your future together.

*annie makes good points, Loveispatient. I think that it’s safe to say, when we’re in love, engaged (annie, she is engaged to this man), etc…life is full of possibilities, and sometimes we don’t always think things through, logically. It sounded like a good idea, a practical idea even, to move three states over to be closer to this man. But, now that you are there…you’re not finding the job you thought you might…might have to commute longer…and your bf is more concerned with his own commute…and making his life easier.

I don’t mean to come across arrogantly, or whatever…not my intent. But, my dd and I have had these talks, planting seeds with her now, at her young age of 13. I have said to her, when you’re an adult, I can’t tell you what to do…but, I hope you don’t ever move for a man without being married to him. If you meet someone and have a long distance relationship–HE should move. I’m sorry, this is how I feel. Call it old fashioned, whatever. Men are ‘wired’ to pursue women. I can’t help but think that your fiance is thinking (not to sound like a broken record) that you won’t complain much about anything he does, since you are ‘stuck,’ and moved three states away. Just know, you are not stuck.

You moved out of the goodness of your heart, and what made sense at the time. But, if there is one thing we can count on in this life, it’s change. (of course, God, first, but change, second!) And I just don’t feel good about this. I don’t know why, I don’t know you or him, but I don’t feel good about women moving thousands of miles for men, without being married. If you both had separate residences, and were now married…it would be different. I wouldn’t have the same angst over a woman moving for a man, because there is a commitment there. Marriage changes the landscape for me, but engaged? Wouldn’t be enough to cause me to move from family, friends, and a good job for a man. (if I were single)

BUT…IT IS WHAT IT IS. You live there now, but please just don’t ignore gut instincts, or red flags. If he is not willing to put you first now, why would he after you’re married?

I PRAY that he doesn’t move in with this bunch, and does it willingly…and isn’t doing it with a frown. I will keep you in my prayers.*

I am also curious why you aren’t married yet, and how soon is this marriage happening.

It seems it would have made a lot more sense for him to insist on marrying you before asking you to move. And it would make a lot more sense to go to the nearest Church tomorrow and ask to be married as soon as possible.

Did this guy get some truly amazing job at NASA or something? What is so special and rare about it that warrants doing this to you? Were there no jobs where you used to live?

How does he treat you otherwise? Before the move was he interested in making sure you were set up too, or at least showed concern that you would have a decent job over there?

I am one of those women whom are learning about the whole husband and wife-submitting to your husbands “rule” that is stated in the Bible and whom hasn’t taken it too happily… I grew up with my father abusing my mother so I promised myself no matter what how many years of marriage or whatever I was not ever going to be like my mother, taking all that abuse with the excuse it’s the best for the children, while turning around and taking it out on those kids…Sorry ain’t happening here! Therefore when my exhusband started his abuse I put up with it, for a decade, I was stired, exhausted, humiliated, ruined, and destroyed morally, emotionally, mentally, physically, I don’t even know how in the world I made it out of there…Perhaps it wasn’t getting beat down like my mother got it, because the first time he raised his hand I raised it back, I wasn’t letting him have the best of me, yet he did…

Every chance my family could would tell me to leave him…We would move back and forth from his family to mine because we both needed someone because we weren’t finding it in each other…His deal was I was mistreating him because of my family and he kept mistreating me because that was his nature…So we fought a lot.

And every chance I was near my family I would move as soon as their controlling efforts started to take effect…

As a semi independent woman-I say semi because lately my family had been helping me, surgery and all- but before being a hard headed woman, I made sure I left my exhusand against everyone’s wishes…Then I met my soon to be future husband, I couldn’t stand their pressuring me into waiting till the children were adults to start dating again, I left…I did move close to be with the man I wanted to be with…Maybe wrong and terrible mother I may seem but the love for my children has never been taken from them, and they are always first…In a way I felt bad because I used this man as an excuse to leave my parent’s home, after I was divorced and single mom…I did tell him this, that this is how I felt but he didn’t think anything bad of it…

Is it wrong to move to a place for a man, perhaps, but at the time when you are in love man does rational go away and the love bug kicks in…I understand why the OP did what she did…And once the fire cools then the whole -regret- or second thoughts kick in…AND you are stuck with the WHAT IF? What if I hadn’t moved would he? What if I hadn’t moved would I have gotten the good job? What if??

Well it’s a bit too late for that, now it’s the present and the OP did what she felt was right…And even if it was a mistake to others or not, that was her choice, and she deserves respect for giving that change a try and so far succeeding…BUT at a bigger lost because she doesn’t have her dream job…BUT remember where you are at now is where GOD wants you to be, it may be a horrible place but it’s the trials that are put infront of you…And He’s there with you helping you every step of the way…

Now the big situation is this roommate thing? First of all for me that’s kind of I don’t know weird how 2 girls would look for 2 guys as roommates? My girlfriends, both single, would look for other girls to be roommates with, not guys, no matter how unsafe or safe they felt, they ended up getting 2 big dogs and paying a little extra to getting them trained to help them against any burglars etc…But 2 girls and 2 guys? That’s kind of weird even with the excuse to saving money??? I mean 3 girls and 1 guy roommate ok that’s still kind of iffy but hey it works you know?!

I wouldn’t want my fiance to save money by staying with 2 other girls…And I know he would have a fit knowing I had 2 male roommates unless they were best friends or brothers or family members… As innocent and as justifiable as it sounds, I just don’t see that as ok…

My brother had a girl roommate, they stayed together during college, I think 1 year, they had known each other for about 4 before then, high school years, and he did save some money. He was dating his 2nd girlfriend and they were going on 2 years… His roommate had gotten into a fight with her boyfriend, and needed comfort, as a gentleman my brother was there to hear her out…Well that hearing out ended up getting drunkness involved, my brother said he had 3 beers, not enough to catch a buzz but she over did it, with the crying and everything…Even his girlfriend heard her over the phone and she even told him, “wow she sounds terrible sounds like she needs a friend!” So he did just that was there for her until she threw up and he dragged her to bed, well in the middle of the night she crawls on his bed and well he says he literally had to throw her off of him, and she was in the action with him while he was asleep… He didn’t know how to explain it to his girlfriend so he tried the best he could, the girl even went and apologized to his girlfriend and she didn’t care she didn’t believe them and she dumped my brother…

I am not saying everyone does this, but like someone else stated the devil never sleeps and let me tell you things like this can happen unwanting nor unwillingly…like “Our Father” states, “lead us not into temptation and deliver us from evil!” Well why put yourself in a place of temptations? No matter how good those girls might be and no matter how great your fiance is, I don’t think it’s right…And I don’t think it’s ok…But again that’s just my personal opinion…

Hang in there and take care…keep praying for guidance, God bless!!!

Wow, I didn’t expect that this would go from a question of whether or not the coed living situation is morally acceptable to whether or not I’m in a bad relationship. 😦

You can all relax :p. He’s a good man, not an ogre.

I must admit, I am a little puzzled by the backlash against us moving to the same area for his job - especially on a board with so many SAHMs.

Anyway, thanks everyone for your (name removed by moderator)ut.

Love is Patient,

The reason people here are concerned about you moving to be near your spouse prior to marriage is that we have come to understand that “submitting” to a spouse (which what being a SAHM requires) really only works well when you have a man who wants to sacrifice for the woman. And the only way you really know this is if you give the man opportunities to demonstrate what he’s willing to do. Had you stayed in your home town you would have been apart, yes. But you would have seen how much your husband was willing to sacrifice in order to be with you.

Your husband probably just thinks of his living arrangment as a way to save money and time. But it doesn’t seem like he’s doing it for the benefit of your soon-to-be marriage; it seems like he’s doing it for himself.

Sorry, I must be really slow. I’m not following the logic here. How would staying in my home town have given me an opportunity to see “how much he was wiling to sacrifice to be with” me?

❤️ Love is Patient
Unfortunately the nature of “realtionship” threads in CAF is that by about post 15 people start questioning your relationship with your boyfirend/spouse/fiance/etc.

Should your fiance move into an apt with two girls-IMO no.

Is it a big deal as far as your relationship goes-IMO no.

It would have put the responsibility of travel on him. He’d either have to travel to see you or he’d have to make travel/lodging arrangements for you to come visit him.

And yes, it might have been more expensive and ended up costing both of you $$$. But the way you work together on budgeting for time together can be a good indicator of how you will work together once you marry.

Why should the responsibility fall to him? A marriage is a cooperative effort, or so I have been told. This seems like good “practice” in cooperation, and they aren’t living together, so no harm no foul.

I would have done what the OP did, if I didn’t have a lot tying me down to the ol’ hometown. 🤷

SAHM’s more than working women need a social network. Working women would meet new people at work, it will be harder for you if you choose to stay at home with your children.

He moved you away from your family, from your friends. Family especially is the big one.

He asked you to make a huge sacrifice so that he could have his first choice of job. I have to wonder why he didn’t make a sacrifice for you and take a job in the area where your whole life was, so that you could regularly interact with your family and your friends.

What is so special about this particular job?

*Hi Love…sorry, we are just concerned for you. I am hopeful that things work out for you. Sorry we got off on a tangent…that’s just my old fashioned sense of people moving for one another, before marriage.

Okay…back to the original topic at hand! So, what might you do if he decides to go against your feelings on this (living with girls) and moves in with them, regardless? *

Hello everyone,

I started this thread because I wanted some feedback on the appropriateness of unmarried, unrelated men and women living together. I was having a bad day and didn’t know how much my discomfort with that idea was related to my bad day. I figured this was a good place to get some Catholic advice.

I am not here looking for discussion or judgment or feedback on the appropriateness of where I am living or my relationship with my fiance. If you wish to continue to discuss the appropriateness of moving for a future spouse, please feel free to create another thread. Thank you.

Finally, in the words of Miss Elizabeth Bennett to Lady Catherine, "I do not pretend to possess equal frankness with your ladyship. You may ask questions which I shall not choose to answer.’’ 😃

So no, I feel no need to reveal his job, our wedding date or anything else of that nature. 🙂

Have a blessed day.

Happily, I don’t have to deal with that problem. He’s moving in with a couple of guys next Saturday. 🙂 He realized how important it was to me.
