Am I breaking God's law with a cigar and a beer?

So In Connecticut the drinking Age is 21 and the legal age to buy tobacco is 21, but not to smoke it, which that law is 18. Now a little background, I’m 16. My dad is okay with me having a beer and cigar once in a while whether it’s with him or a few friends. As long as it’s a once in a while thing and not all the time of course. He even bought me and some of the guys on the football team cigars after we beat a team 41-0. But on the other hand, my mom would skin us both alive. Like should would probably break the fifth commandment. Now I don’t want to break the fourth commandment by disrespecting her. And I also don’t want to be in a state of sin because I know it says, “Render unto Caesar what is Caesars”. Would it be a sin?

You are way underage to be doing either. Your dad isn’t doing you or your team mates any favors.

My dad is VERY old fashioned. He thinks it’s ridiculous that responsible, good, chaste, Catholic young men, who all want to do noble things military, college, (I myself want to be a priest after the military) can’t have a cigar and a beer.

In itself, no. In regards to breaking the law and keeping secrets from your mother, doing things she would forbid? That should give pause.

It would probably be best if you waited till you were legal age to do these things.

Also, while I understand bonding with your dad, and i understand the laws in USA are pretty restrictive, he needs to be careful from a legal perspective about buying for young men who aren’t his son.

Finally, smoking cigars is not a great habit for athletes to get into.

Can you encourage your dad to buy something else for the team instead, like a good meal or lots of pizzas?

I’m not going to address the whole “don’t tell your mom” thing because I think every one of us had the experience of one parent letting us do something the other parent wasn’t keen on, and generally it’s no big deal, as long as it’s just once in a while.

While your dad may be perfectly legal depending on the state you live in, in allowing YOU a cigar and a beer, he may be breaking the law if he supplies your ‘good Catholic young/underage’ friends with cigars and especially beer. I mean, seriously breaking the law.

I’m probably even older than your dad and stricter, so I can weigh in on this. It is my experience that the stricter and more ‘holy’ we think we are, the more we view ‘breaking the rules’ as something that we’re entitled to do. Because we tend to think, “We are much better than the world with raising our kids with good values, so when we think the world’s ‘petty’ laws are ‘stupid’, we’re not doing anything ‘wrong’ in breaking or ignoring them.”

I was lucky enough not to do anything stupid before I got smart, but that was the grace of God, not the brain of me, that saved me.

You don’t need to tell Dad, “Dad, you’re wrong”, but you can refrain from crystallizing him into thinking, “Dang, I’m the best coolest dad, I give my son things he WANTS” by next time he thinks he wants to ‘treat’ you with, “You know, Dad, cigars are great and we know how to handle them, so for a treat, I’d really like to take some money and donate to 40 days for Life”, or “Hey dad, let’s take the Exodus 90 challenge”.

Yes, you need to worry about God’s law (and while you’re letting Dad play the cool parent and him putting your mother in the position of the tyrannical, overbearing worrywart, that is NOT part of God’s law and it’s very unfair to you and your parents), but worry about your ‘state’ law as well. If your dad winds up being charged with supplying liquor to minors, it’s really serious.

If its one of those commercial mass produced cigar, and one of those pale tasteless beers that will have countless commercials on during tomorrow’s big game, you probably haven’t violated God’s law…but, man, you have violated all the premises of good taste!

Your dad could end up in legal trouble giving you and your buddies beer and cigars

All it takes is for one of the parents to find out and they can file a report with the police and even bring a lawsuit against your father. Tell him to stop !

Now, if it was just you and him in your house once in a while ? I have no problem with it and it’s not a sin, but still illegal.

Your Dad should be speaking with a lawyer as it appears that he’s breaking multiple laws here.

To quote Katharine Hepburn in the movie, “Rooster Cogburn”:

“Well, I know of no passage to prove it, but I’m certain that the Good Lord smokes fine cigars.”

As for the beer–I don’t allow underage drinking in my house. I won’t even let my underage kids drink wine with a meal, which a lot of people think is overly strict. Is it God’s law? No. It’s my law, and that’s what matters in this case. (and it’s the state’s law, too).

Have my daughters drunk alcohol elsewhere? I have no doubt that they have. But they know how I stand on the rules, and that’s about as far as I can take it. My son’s too young yet to be in those situations. I have a feeling he’ll stick to the rules. Frankly, I won’t be surprised if he resorts to physicality to enforce the rules upon others. 😁 (and he plays on the O line, and has the heft to back up his words, if you know what I mean).

He could face criminal prosecution. And if he’s in a position where works with young people, like a teacher, he could lose his job.

And take a look at your school’s rules and the rules of your state’s scholastic sports governing body. You’d probably be suspended from the team, if not banned.

I’m writing all this knowing full well that high school kids drink booze, and 99% of the time no harm comes from it. But if I were in a position of authority, you’d better hope God grants you forgiveness, because I wouldn’t.

Minimum age laws for alcohol and tobacco are not unjust. Therefore, you should obey them.

Sorry. You are 16 years old. Don’t even talk about putting yourself up with noble things like the military until you have been there. You are 16. You are a child, and your father is justifying his bad choices of letting you drink and smoke when you are underage by speaking of “noble things” you have never accomplished.

Quite ironic.

I’m sitting here smiling as here, you can smoke at sixteen and have alcohol under supervision with an adult. I sometimes forget how conservative the USA is and can vary from state to state. Clearly though you are in a very strict country when it comes to these things so just wait a couple of years. Wouldn’t recommend smoking at any age to be honest but if you must the Odd cigar wouldnt be the end of the world. If I was your mother and found out I’d give your dad what for, got to be honest.

Alcohol affects brain development. Your brain is not fully developed until about 25 years of age.

I know someone will come on and give me the “you can go fight for your country but you can’t have a beer” nonsense, but most 18 year olds are not serving their country. And if they are, their parents aren’t there to stop them from drinking. And unfortunately, neither is the military.

CAF rules state
Do not offer or solicit medical, psychiatric, psychological, or legal advice. Do not give advice that is contrary to civil law. Do not give advice to a minor that opposes the instruction of a parent or legal guardian. All such discussions should be directed to the proper authorities: parents, guardians, therapists, parish priests, or primary care providers.

This is a discussion you should be having with your father.

Cigars are to be enjoyed with fine brandy, not beer. So, in that light, having a cigar with beer may be sinful, but venially so. 😉

On a serious note, your Dad is okay with it, so you aren’t dishonoring him. But your Mom is not. To avoid dishonor to her, you should avoid it until you are independent.

I encourage you not to. I don’t know about Gods law regarding this. However as one poster mentioned brain development is still occurring. Give yourself a chance at the best future possible. You’ll thank me later on.
