That is offensive. 😦
That really depends upon what the specific group was doing, now doesn’t it?
The Antiochian Orthodox Church is thoroughly Orthodox.
Most of the ā€œWestern Rite Orthodoxā€ in the US are in the AOC.

Most of the parishes come from Protestant congregations converting, and use either the OF or translated Tridentine Mass, with an epiclesis patched into the Roman Canon.

I think it is offensive too, I thought so the first time I read it.

So, in your opinion, what does one ā€˜do’ to look like a Protestant trying not to be Protestant?

Perhaps we can find out what was being done that prompted the comment.

I can certainly attest to some protestantizations during my 38 years as a Roman Catholic…but we won’t go there.

Most Antiochians are thoroughly Eastern…and thoroughly Orthodox.

The Antiochian Orthodox Church is thoroughly Orthodox.
Except in their lack of diocesan bishops… clearly a violation of the canons…

… and their frequent overlooking whether an individual is Melkite or Antiochian…

And some of their parishes really were protestants trying to act orthodox… examine the history of the parish of St John in Chugiak… formery Evangelical Orthodox… and now celebrating mostly in the Western Rite…

Since you have now decided to change this thread to a calumniation of the Antiochians…perhaps we should discuss some of the problems with the Catholic ā€œriteā€ of which you belong?

Should we start a calumniating party Aramis? Would you like that?

The Antiochians are thoroughly and canonicly Orthodox.

Must one be contrite for the Catholic marriage?
  1. marriage in a Catholic Church, bringing Orthodox excommunication
  2. reconciliation for marriage in Catholic Church?
  3. Orthodox marriage
I asked him if I would need to go to confession or this, and he said no. The reason is that I received a dispensation from the bishop to do this, which was required. He’s no longer our bishop (Bishop Mark of Toledo), but father said it would still be considered permission given.

Just wanted to thank everyone for there help and advice for my situation and I need no more help so u can all stop posting since it turned into everyone is offended.

It must be my fault for my wording so I will say to all Antiochian Orthodox I am sorry. Imagine its like a text and you don’t have all the information slow down. I should have just said I was not comfortable there since they did not seem to know what they were doing during the liturgy, that does not mean all Antiochian Orthodox do not know just this church and maybe they no now so I am wrong and I will take it back but please forgive me. Antiochians are Orthodox.

That seems childish to attack my Greek Churches practice in response, how about we take the advice from St Maximus and judge ourselves instead of others, so I will say me first I am guilty.****

Anything else I said that offended anyone please let me know other than that I have recieved great advice here but I need no more so you can all stop posting and argue about other things:). You are all so very knowledgeable you must learn so much from sharpening each other.

Still discerning but I think I’m going to become and Easter Catholic.

Yian:

Let me apologize on behalf of the entire forum. I do think everyone who contributed on this thread was (and remains) quite sympathetic to your situation, but our discussion and rendering of charitable advice may have gone a little sideways on occasion …

We do pray that you find the path which allows you and your new family to walk alongside the Lord again in the near future. That is what is most important!

BTW - I am an Eastern Rite Catholic - Ruthenian as opposed to Melkite, but I know that tradition well and do believe it may provide a comfortable setting for worship for you, if you so choose. By odd coincidence, I recently spent a few years in Detroit (I recall seeing you were from the area), and had occasion to get to know the current Melkite bishop, Bishop Nicholas Samra, quite well as he was a frequent guest of our parish. He was living in Warren, MI at the time. He is a dear and holy man, and I was very pleased for all my brethren Melkites to see him appointed as their new Shepherd this past summer.

Please don’t misunderstand - I’m not necessarily advocating that as your only path, but since you seemed to indicate a leaning toward the Melkite tradition in one of your more recent posts, I thought I would share this information with you. I also have a very deep respect for the Greek Orthodox Church, with many close friends among its faithful. There is a large parish community in my area, and I try to participate in services at their church as often as I can. After all, to paraphrase Mr. Portokalos from My Big Fat Greek Wedding, ā€œI show you that every [Byzantine Divine Liturgy] comes from Greekā€.

May the Lord bless you and your family! The Lord always provides, and I’m sure that he will guide you in your quest to reconcile this most unfortunate situation!
