If it was not so I would have left Catholicism and even Christianity long ago.
Sadism? He must be a sadist then in letting Christ, His own Son Who He loves even more than us, suffer then.
Anti-reason? That’s funny for me, who has a BS in Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, and a Doctor of Medicine. Besides, you probably missed the thing about being more than conquerors.
And the thing is, even though my wording seems a bit pessimistic, it is actually more than optimistic: it is glorious.
*"If we let Christ into our lives, we lose nothing, nothing, absolutely nothing of what makes life free, beautiful and great.*No!*Only in this friendship are the doors of life opened wide.*Only in this friendship is the great potential of human existence truly revealed.*Only in this friendship do we experience beauty and liberation.*And so, today, with great strength and great conviction, on the basis of long personal experience of life, I say to you, dear young people: Do not be afraid of Christ!*He takes nothing away, and he gives you everything.*When we give ourselves to him, we receive a hundredfold in return.Yes, open, open wide the doors to Christ – and you will find true life."
Impossible in practice? I am living itWhat you’ve described sounds like a great system on paper, but something impossible to achieve in practice. Or else, to achieve it I must abandon reason which seeks explanation, and give myself entirely over to emotion and what might be called “mind games”: “He hurts me because he loves me; he hurts me because it’s good for me, and good for others! My pain is helping people I cannot see in ways I do not know!” If a woman does this to justify a relationship with another human, we call it a mental disorder and insanity and the relationship abusive, but if she does it with God, we call it piety. Doesn’t that strike you as odd?
“Oh, but the difference is that God has the power to actually obtain this good, whereas humans clearly do not.” How does that justify God requiring someone to suffer before He will help someone else? Is this not sadism?
Or to approach what you’ve written another way, woe to me that my parents encouraged me to go to college, where they taught me to always systematically seek explanations to make sense of reality. Your method – which seems the same as St. Therese of Lisieux – appears to be instead to favor any ad hoc explanation that results in defense of Christian dogma. I do not see how this makes good use of reason or glorifies God. Rather, it seems even to demean His creation, making humans something less than human, rather more like sheep that exist solely for what they can give to their shepherd.
