Am I sinning by smoking?

HI… Nice to meet you. I’d say it was a sin. It leads to face many problems in future. I recommend to quit it as soon as possible.

I’ve been smoking for over 15 years now. I am down to 6 or at the very most 7 cigarette’s per day.
I admit I’m physically dependent on nicotine, but a sin by no means.
The first cigarette I smoke is a least two hours after I arise from sleep, pray, eat breakfast etc.
I could most likely quit if I choose to make the effort, but honestly I’m not able to or want to right now. If I was suddenly was diagnosed with cancer sure I would quit.

I posted this link before and will again:

I just remembered caffeine can become just as much a physical dependency as nicotine, I know many people who cannot go a day without it.

smoking is not sin. there’s no catholic catechismal teaching against it. even some priests smoke. what’s disturbing is in this video “korean goes to hell,” people go to hell by smoking!

If it is not sin, what is it then?

What is a sin actually?

Why do people go for Confession and others don’t? Why some people go for Confession more often, while others much less?

Why did St Pope John Paul II, when he was alive, go for Confession at least once in a few days?

Where is the line that separates a sin from not a sin?

Something to reflect on.

You might already have cancer cells in your body. I hope you don’t. Why wait til the horse is out of the gate?

Now, as a nurse, kids come into ERS w upper respiratory infections from homes where parents smoke.
Plus, I got COPD (emphysema) from my family’s second hand smoke.
It’s not farcical.

Sounds a bit like Pilate: “What is truth?”
Good response. And a good question as well.

The idea was to provoke our thought and examine the subject further.

What is sin then? We can say it is something that is against God, against others and even against ourselves. IOW, anything against the great Commandment, which is a summary of all the Commandments.

Then we can ask, why do I smoke?

As an ex-smoker, I smoked because I was addicted to it, not because I wanted to waste my money on cigarettes or burned my lungs. Yes, initially it could be due to peer pressures where smoking might be seemingly cool.

Now we know that there are negative effects of smoking, which is proven medically.

So what do you do when you smoke? Don’t you abuse your body? And what is your body? Is not it the temple of the Holy Spirit? Don’t you think you just smoked the Holy Spirit out?

What about the smoke that comes our of your mouth? Would it not cause nuisance to those who do not like it? Worse still, would it not cause the negative effect to the others that cigarette smoke would bring?

In other word, your smoke now, not only causes negative effect to you but even to other. Some people are sensitive or even allergic to cigarette smoke.

In ordinary circumstances, would you allow yourselves to inconvenience others or even harm them? Normally for most of us, no, we would not want to.

That is exactly what you do when you smoke. Unless you smoke far away from people. Then you only abuse your own body.

Even if a Pope smokes, that does not make it a right thing to do. Granted, in the early days, the effect of smoking was not really known yet but now it is not so.

The thing is, once addicted, one cannot stop or it takes gigantic effort of self will and control to stop.

God bless.

It’s never easy to tell a smoker not to smoke.

I was at a lobby of an international hotel when a couple of Middle Eastern looking men sat next to me and started puffing their cigarettes. The smoke irritated me and as I got up quickly to move away, my foot trip on the sofa table causing the flower vase to tumble. The guys taught I was rude. There was a scene and the security had to be called.

I had to explain myself that my asthma could not tolerate cigarette smoke.

So much what smoking can do to others.

In my opinion, smoking is a sin.
Yes, at least when the smoker has full knowledge of the consequences of smoke and deliberately does it, which can cause health hazard to others and himself.

Its mitigation perhaps is because it’s not within his control due to addiction.

Yes, but that’s not an excuse. There are products on the market to help smokers quit. They need to take advantage of them and all forms of help in beating the addicti on.

Vaping is an alternative, especially for those who have tried many times and never succeeded. Some people quit overnight. Many report improved lung function and better resistance to colds and flu. The FDA is softening their stance on the issue as studies confirm those results.

It’s also never easy to mind your own business. Trust me, smokers know other people don’t want them to smoke. You are just joining a long line of busy-bodies.

If your asthma bothers you, that’s a you problem.

Sure. Blame the victim.

When somebody’s smoke gets close to your lungs and eyes, it becomes your business. Hence all the legislation to take smoking off of airplanes, and outside of restaurants and bars. Now the legislation needs to go even further so that people at entrances to hospitals, in bus shelters, on public sidewalks, and in apartments are ticketed. And smokers should pay for their health care in places where there’s socialized health care.

“You might already have cancer cells in your body.”

That’s a good point, I’ll continue to cut down as I can tolerate it. But the reason I’m not prepared to quit completely at this point is soon I’ll be tapering off a medication I no longer need and that takes precedence over the cigarette’s.

Well, how very Christian of you. I expect the answer from a smoker. They are very sensitive if being questioned why they smoke.

I can say, why do I have to breathe your air and get my asthma attack?

You have to ask yourself, why do you smoke? What’s its purpose?

Why would you want to pollute your house? Why would you want to harm your children and your wife. If they have asthma, that would definitely YOUR problem.

Why would not you want to give the best to your wife and clean your breathe from cigarette smoke?

The list goes on.

Note. This is for internet. Do not try this line of questions in real life. A smoker may turn violent on you.
