I’m brand new here… Been a smoker for about two years, attempting to quit.

Is smoking a sin? I never thought about it until recently.

Thanks,

I would say you are harming yourself. To what extent is it willful? That is the question.
This is something to discuss with your confessor.
I can tell you this: we just lost our parish secretary to lung cancer. It destroyed her hip, took her long before she should have died, and died a horrible lingering death.
Think hard. It’s just not worth it. God bless you.

I appreciate your insight, and story…

I was an addict for years, and got off all of the drugs and booze. I have horrible social anxiety, and started smoking to cope with it.

I’ve cut back drastically - from two packs a day to about 4 cigarettes daily. Reading this is a good kick in the butt for me to get it together and quit for good.

Do you use tobacco to excess? The Catechism:

2290 The virtue of temperance disposes us to avoid every kind of excess: the abuse of food, alcohol, tobacco, or medicine. Those incur grave guilt who, by drunkenness or a love of speed, endanger their own and others’ safety on the road, at sea, or in the air.

I don’t know about sinning. But I do know that my grandmother’s opthalmologist said that her smoking has contributed to her macular degeneration - that it has wrecked the vessels in her retina and now she has to go every 4-6 weeks to get injections into her eyeballs or she’ll go blind.

They put a spring to hold her eyelids open and she has to watch the needle approach and penetrate her eyeball. The whole time.

I think about that to remind myself why I don’t smoke.

Since your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, would you blow smoke in the Spirit’s face? OK, He’s a spirit and has no face, but still…

There are bishops and cardinals who smoke.
It’s not wise, but not a sin.

Personally, I don’t believe the Priests in the US and Italy who smoke are going to hell for it. Nor do I believe the doctors who prescribed smoking to mentally distraught patients nor their patients who complied will go to hell for it.

I enjoy a good cigar or pipe during the warm weather; however, I quit during the Winter. My coworkers smoke like chimneys and are definitely addicted

An occasional cigarette, cigar, pipe, hookah session (provided it’s tobacco you’re smoking) is most likely not a sin. But if it’s becoming a habit, addiction, or substitute for prayer and Confession, you need to quit.

Depending on how much you smoke it can be unhealthy. I don’t think an occasional cigarette or even one a day is all that bad. A lot of other things are unhealthy. Overeating can be very unhealthy. If you gave up smoking but ate a lot more and got heavy that might actually be worse.

This may well be true but I am often skeptical of these claims. I don’t doubt that smoking is bad for your health. But they tend to blame everything on smoking if you were ever a smoker.

no you are not sinning; it is the same as having a glass of beer

I think it’s definitely a sin. And it leads to other sins. For instance, do you think it’s alright to smoke on a public street? I don’t. Who knows if as I walk by and breathe your smoke, that that isn’t the smoke that could cause a few cancer cells to form in my body and be the beginning of the end?

Do you think it’s alright to smoke on your back porch? Well I think that’s also very selfish. Now your neighbour suffering through hot weather has to close the window to avoid your smoking. I could open the window again in twenty minutes, and then guess what, the person is smoking again.

And how many smokers do you see throw their butts on the sidewalk? Now somebody else has to risk their health picking that up, and I have to pay for it too.

And if you smoke in an apartment building, chances are good that you are giving other people your bad air through the hallways and air ducts. Often you hear about a cigarette being the cause of an apartment fire, too.

There are even people who smoke around their babies in prams, and think that’s fine. Uh, No.

I sincerely hope you cease smoking this minute. Attempting to quit is not quitting. Make the decision as if your life depended on it.

Greetings
Our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit. They are on loan We should be healthy in mind, body and soul. I should not be overweight plus other stuff. You should not smoke. We should wear modest clothing and swim suits. Avoid the occasion of sin. Guys looking at near naked bodies are definitely not having holy thoughts.

Good d, Clean our minds and have courage to change our behaviors. Let us be what You wish us to be.
In Jesus name
Amen
In Christ’s love

i wouldn’t worry about smoking a cigarette or two (or three) in a day

there are far greater problems out there

Pack a day smoker here, been smoking since I was 15. Venial at worst as long as you’re not currently dying. Maybe mortal if you do it with bad intention. Probably just an imperfection. Go ahead and mention it at Confession if you feel the need, but don’t be worried about being in a state of mortal sin if you happen to break and smoke a cigarette.

Good luck on quitting! It can be really tough, but after the first few weeks I hear it’s not so bad.

Saint Pope Pius X smoked and was known to give the charity of a cherubim. Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati has smoked as well.

The traditional teaching is that tobacco use is not a sin. However, in those days it was not widely understood how addictive it is and what a strong carcinogen it is. Give it up if you possibly can.

For a laugh:

“Smoke, smoke, smoke that cigarette!”

Not really. Cigarette smoke is toxic, no question. Poison tantamount to slow suicide.

For some ppl, smoking, drinking, even smoking pot
is Okay, but like Robby says, try to find out WHAT
God’s will for your life is. Pray in the spirit when
NOT doing these things, fast and have a LONG
talk w/ the Lord, to whom you owe your very
breath!! And may the Lord hear and answer your
prayer.
