Am I supposed to say the whole 15 decade Rosary?

For most of my life, I’ve always just said a 5 decade Rosary. However, I came across an article from a priest yesterday on a site that says Our Lady wants all 15 said and not just 5

I know that certain mysteries are to be said on certain days, but if Our Lady wants all 15 isn’t that what I should be saying? For the record, it takes me about 45 minutes to say the whole 15 decade rosary.

The Rosary is a private devotion and not required to be prayed at all.
However, for those who pray the Rosary it is up to each individual to decide how many decades they want to pray.

One is free.

Our Lady just said “the Rosary” (implying the normal 5)…

One can of course pray more.

If doing first Saturdays, the entire mysteries. There are 20 now. First Saturdays is from Our Lady of Fatima, at Fatima, and with Sr Lucia. At the time of Fatima there were only 15.
The Luminous Mysteries were added late in the last century by St John Paul 11 . They include Jesus baptism by John, the first miracle at Cana, beginning of Jesus mission, the Last Supper and Jesus meeting with Moses and Elijah.

Otherwise, which private revelation was it, and is it approved?

What I do, is try to be in constant prayer daily. So when not distracted, just pray, where ever I am, or whatever I am doing. It has meant shutting out all the thoughts our brain seems to waste time with, and swapping in a Lords Prayer or Hail Mary, and the like. My ongoing conversation with God.

There are no regulations regarding this.
Pray what you can, just pray it! It’s good for you!
I particularly love the Luminous ministries as they cover the public ministry of Christ.
(good apologetics for those who claim it’s all about Mary and not Jesus. No, she always and only points us to her Divine Son. ) 😉

What everyone is posting is correct. Just to top things off a bit I also let the online Rosary play in the background while I do other things. Peace.

The First Five Saturdays Devotion

It seems that Our Lady requested one set of five mysteries, AND fifteen minutes of meditation on all the mysteries. That seems easy to confuse and I didn’t want anyone to be discouraged from this devotion!

As others have mentioned, you need not offer a single Rosary to be a Catholic in good standing. However, it most certainly does lead to a deeper relationship with our Lord. Having said that, when I hear of the ‘15 decade’ Rosary, I wonder if the information is older, or comes from someone who may consciously reject the Luminous mysteries - which I see as shortsighted. There is no aspect of Christ’s life that is beneath contemplation.

God hears each and every prayer, and even a single decade will not fall on deaf ears, so to speak. We do not want prayer to become a burden - it should be joyful, even when contemplating the sorrowful mysteries.

Just for some clarification, I only recite the Rosary when I have 100% of my time to sit and recite it all the way through in one sitting. I guess to me I wouldn’t try and break it up throughout the day or say it while doing the dishes.

I may be a tad scrupulous, but I also have to say it while I am physically holding a Rosary too. For those who have asked, here is the article which prompted my curiosity:

Thanks St Francis. 😇 Is the consecration to Our Lady part of it too ?

Punisher thunder the priest on that site seems to be making a recommendation only. And has left out the Luminous Mysteries, which are said today, Thursdays!

As I thought, that is an ultra-traditional group that rejects Vatican II. Not even sure they are in communion with Rome, but they could be.

One should not make the perfect to be the enemy of the good. I normally pray the rosary while walking. I often use a finger rosary. I normally divide up the decades across the day.

As for the article, no that was not how we prayed the rosary. I don’t go back to 1917 but my parents did. The custom was to pray five decades, which was why our rosaries were five decades and we had the division for which five decades to pray on which days…of course, some people devised their own system.

Today the rosary is changed. It has 20 decades…no longer 15.

One does not need to do the Total Consecration to Mary in order to do the FFS devotion

That is a very traditional site; they don’t really “do” the Luminous mysteries.

Notice that the author of the article you read recommends splitting up the mysteries, saying one decade each hour, so if you wanted to undertake saying all 15 mysteries each day, you could say one set as usual, sitting and using your beads, and the rest as “extras,” and split them up.*

Altho yours is a good way to pray, your rigidity or attachment to it might cause or indicate problems. You should discuss that with a good priest in your area, who will be able to help you evaluate this.*

Father - by “finger rosary” do you mean counting the Hail Mary’s on your fingers? I am glad to hear I’m not the only one…I usually divide the decades across the day as well and often use my fingers as I may be walking, on the train, etc.

If you can pray 15 decades of the Rosary with devotion and without distraction and, above all, with great love for God … go for it.

But if you’re forcing yourself to pray 15 decades just because you’re afraid some ultra-traditionalist Priest is right when he insists on legalism? Hm.

I use the good old finger rosary of 5 digits on each hand, great for mobile Rosaries. Although sometimes I might forget the count and say a couple more or less Hail Mary’s. But the point IMHO, is for us beginner laity, to get into the habit of ongoing conversations with God, Our Lady and your fav saints.
And not be concerned about making a mistake. I even add in words.
I have:
St Michael, satan’s defeater , the Archangel , in his prayer, because I am sure satan was interferring with that prayer 😇. I also add to the Apostles Creed ,in the Rosary, I believe in the wonderful and Glorious Holy Spirit.

If it isnt The Biblical prayers , ie Lords Prayer, or said in Mass, we should make prayers our own. Give them our meaning. Invest in our private friendship with God. Get to know Him.

A gorgeous 80 something lady I know, who was a nun, left to marry, raised 5 children, sits and watches the Tennis on tv. She says a pray for each person in the audience, through the match!

St. Louis de Monfort said that kids should say at least 5 decades and 15 decades for adults (Secret of the Rosary), but seeing how busy our lives have become, I would advise saying 5 decades minimum for both kids and adults.

But that’s just it though, I don’t feel as if I am being scrupulous to a degree that some think that I am.

I’m not saying that those who use a finger Rosary and take walks or visit a park bench and say it are in the wrong. What I was saying was that I feel that breaking down decades and mysteries into miniscule events that it sort of defeats the purpose of saying it? I suppose saying 5 in the morning, 5 midday, and 5 at night is ok. But to further break it down anymore I just feel is counterproductive.
