I am not going to say I always hate shopping but I am going to say that I often go through phases where it seems more like a choir that anything else. Unless I have money to spend I really don’t care to window shop for more than an hour or so.

Yesterday, after work since it was Friday, I was in a bit of a mood to go out instead of coming straight home. So I went to the mall. Now admittedly, I am picky but that is because I find certain fabrics uncomfortable and annoying. This is the second time in the last few months that I have gone to a mall, bought nothing and found it to just be depressing.

As it stand, I have more than enough suitable clothes for which I thank God for. Also, I am in a period where I am earning very little and can barely cover the basics only. I just could not bring myself to but yet another shirt that I would wear at most twice a month. But what really baffles me, is the whole process **was not **a sacrifice. I almost felt like the same sickness one feels after eating too much. It saddened me to think of all the clothes in the mall since it felt like materialism overkill

I am wondering since lately I have been admiring the simple life of the Jesuits if this is a sign of becoming holier?

I know of a few Ladies that hate shopping.. there in get what they need then out....
Do you think maybe that its just the Mall experience itself and not the purchase of items?
how do you feel if you buy a coffee, sit relax and watch the world go by ?

I also dislike shopping and try to do as much as possible online. I don’t like the crowds and I don’t like the constant pressure on people to spend money they don’t have. I said to my husband yesterday that I really don’t need stuff in my life - when we moved abroad a couple of years ago, we both gave much of our accumulated possessions to charity and I haven’t missed any of it.

I buy clothes only when I need them and I’m not interested in following fashion - just like my late mum taught me, comfort always comes first! I’m in the process of emptying my wardrobe right now and was just packing more good clothes up for the Salvation Army shelter near our house, as the homeless need them and I certainly don’t.

If I had given all that money to charity in the first place, that would have been the right decision. What is wrong with us all? We need so little, in reality.

Me too. I hate shopping. When I need to get soemthing, I decide to buy a gift for someone, I plan my trip to the mall like military surgical strike.

No, you’re not. My mother hated shopping, too. We used to laugh that the “shopping gene” must skip a generation because both my sister and I love shopping and so did our grandmother. When my mother would go shopping with me, she would often find a nice place to sit and have a coffee, I’d go browse around, and then I’d meet up with her and we’d sit and talk.

I think part of the reason she disliked it so much was the change from “downtown” shopping to suburban malls. She really didn’t like the mall environment.

I’m a woman - I don’t like shopping and I don’t particularly care for chocolate either – the two things that women are supposed to love!

Some of my clothes are 15 years old and I’m still wearing them - don’t care about fashion either.

🙂

Also not a shopping fan here, either. I can’t stand shopping with my mother in law who insists on making it an all-day trip. I like to be organized in everything I do, and shopping is no exception. I go in with a list of what I need, where to get it, and how much it will cost. Any extra time spent is simply wasted time for me!

I’m also not too big into fashion; sometimes I feel so sloppy dressed in my holey (but comfy) jeans and sneakers next to someone with cute jeggings, nice sweater, and tall boots. I know that’s just not my style, and I can’t help being me, but it does bother me sometimes…

No, I don’t like shopping either.

My knees hurt when I go shopping, either in a big department store, a mall, or a city street.

I’m not very good at shopping. I never read the ads and look for sales. I never plan ahead. I just go buy something when I need it, which usually means when something breaks or falls apart. This means that often, I’m in “panic” mode in the store and I have to buy whatever works. I’m not just talking about clothing. I do this with appliances, household items, yard items, etc.

Over a year ago, the curtains in our bedroom became so bedraggled, shredded (from age–almost 25 years old), stained (from rain blowing in on them), and dull-looking that I pulled them down and went out to buy something new. Well, I never found anything, and I got all confused by all the options (blinds, pleated blinds, draperies, curtains, shades, a valance, the different kinds of hardware, colors, patterns, blackouts, sheers, local seamstress vs. big box store, environmentally-friendly vs. petroleum-based fabrics, etc.), and I don’t want to spend a thousand dollars on one window, because of course, I would also need to buy matching bedclothes, and I should probably paint the bedroom, but since I’m not physically able to do a lot of painting, I would have to hire it done. Heck, a thousand dollars!–more than likely it will cost three thousands dollars by the time I do all of that stuff! And if I buy new furniture to go with the new paint, bedclothes, and window treatments, it will cost me five thousand dollars!

So our bedroom still doesn’t have curtains. 😦

Funny thing–I love grocery shopping. I love planning the menus, making up the lists, and especially being at the grocery store rolling my cart up and down the aisles and greeting all the other shoppers. I feel competent in this arena.

NO, NO, A THOUSAND TIMES NO!! I am very thankful for the interwebz so I can just point and click and it’s deliverd to my doorstep. The thought of going to the mall gives me the heeby jeebies.

I am one of these. Even online shopping irritates me rather quickly.

Faced with a similar problem, I bought cloth shower curtains. Was able to cover two windows (one in the bedroom, one in the guest bedroom) for less than $125, including the curtain rods and rings. If your windows are small it should cost even less, as you wouldn’t need long rods and might be able to fashion two curtains out of a single shower curtain. The curtains in the guest bedroom are solid white while those in the master bedroom are dark grey (I can’t sleep in a brightly-lit room so blocking out the rising sun was important since the window faces east-northeast and in summer the sun rises at around 5:00am here!) No one has ever guessed they are shower curtains. When they get dirty I throw them in the washing machine, iron when dry and put them back up.

The painting and bed linens, well…sadly, can’t help ya there. :nope: Maybe others have ideas.

I also hate shopping. My idea of a perfect shopping trip is when I walk in, tell the person what I want, they fetch it in my size, tell me it’s on clearance, I buy it and try it on when I get home. I hate looking for stuff. I hate trying to track down a sales associate. I hate fitting rooms. I hate waiting in lines. I hate being asked to apply for a credit card. I basically detest the whole experience. If it wasn’t so difficult to return items you buy online, I would probably do all my shopping that way.

No.

I have been accused of shopping like a man. I walk through the store and if I don;t see a suitable item, I am usually outside again within a few minutes. The only times I enjoy shopping is if I am on a day trip and I can browse in a Catholic Shop or small independent outlets. I once spent nearly 45 minutes in a Catholic Shop in Cape Cod having a great time. I overcame my indecision by buying both the Divine Mercy and the Sacred Heart pictures, plus the CD playing as background music (I felt I couldn’t keep hanging around listening to the music all afternoon).

Lord, please grant that my future wife will be like these virtuous women and hate shopping. :gopray: :byzsoc: :crossrc:

Depends on what kind of shopping it is. I absolutely loathe clothing/shoe shopping. The styles are usually just downright ugly, the sizes are all over the place, and I hate having to wait for a changing room, only to find that that shirt I carefully selected is too big or small. Appliance and furniture shopping is equally as boring for me. However, I could spend hours in Barnes and Noble or Gamestop. For some reason the only shopping I can stand is when I shopping for books or video games. The penalties of growing up with boys, I guess. 🤷
Lol at the post above me. 😛

Well first of all, if I decided not to go home right after work I would never ever set foot in a mall as a way to pass time. :). I might go to an open shopping strip and get a cup of coffee, go to the library or a bookstore, I might possibly go into a dress shop because there are two that I like that are in open shopping and not a mall.

Most likey I’d buy some interesting ingredients and go home to cook.

Although for some reason, given Cat’s curtain dilemma, I could handle that. I like window stuff. I don’t like hanging rods and blinds, but I’m very good at choosing. I will admit that after my kids changed bedrooms (dd is away at school so ds got the bigger room) we never properly rehung the curtains. Oh well.

This is pretty much me, except the growing up with boys part. Put me in a book store or video game store and I am perfectly content. Also, I love shopping for my kids (even when it’s for clothes) just not myself so much.

We just prefer intellectual entertainment over looking pretty. 🙂 And I love looking for clothes for my younger relatives (I don’t have any kids of my own yet). The little outfits are so cute, and I’m happy knowing I won’t be the one having to try it on. 😛
