Common sense.
Whatever.

There are a lot of people that thought “common sense” would dictate not bringing idols into the Vatican grounds either.

And offering sacrifice to the idols as well.

And perhaps some of those same people now have MORE “common sense” after seeing such a display and are not so quick to blow-off other pagan activities.

Maybe some of the same people consulting for one idol in the Church used secular influence for another idol close by.

Maybe it was a “secular influence” gaffe within the Vatican too (they have secular employees).
But maybe not.

While there is a big stir on these boards, on EWTN, and in a few other areas of Catholic media… I think this represents a microcosm of primarily American orthodox (small “o”) Catholics. The vast, vast majority of Catholics don’t even know there was a synod and wouldn’t care about the statuettes on display if they knew. I certainly haven’t heard mention of it outside of these boards. I’m not saying whether the idols should or shouldn’t have been displayed in the way they were. All I’m saying is that it would be a mistake to assume that the number of people who are upset is as significant as it might appear from the hubbub on CA and EWTN (rightly or wrongly).
