It appears Father Matt Malone does not follow US or International current events too closely. The article mentions tyranny as “a legitimate 18th-century concern but an increasingly remote, fanciful possibility in the contemporary United States”.
I do not buy that.
Sounds a lot like The National Catholic Reporter, which all of us here take very, very seriously. So it sounds like America, Catholic Magazine, is neither Catholic nor American…![]()
That’s fine as long as you apply that debate to everything protected in the consitutition the same way - right to vote, right to free speech, 5th amendment rights, etc.I think it is good to bring these issues up for debate in a Catholic context. For too long, firearms have been an unquestionable article of faith in this country, seemingly up there with the Nicene creed.
It is good to call everything into question, if only to be sure of the position one holds.

As far as I am concerned, they are welcome to call all of those into question. It can only do good in waking uP the readership’s minds. That’s fine as long as you apply that debate to everything protected in the consitutition the same way - right to vote, right to free speech, 5th amendment rights, etc.
Singling out one amendment for debate shows a bias instead of a general intent of periodic discussion.
Amen!Firearms can be used prudently and within Catholic doctrine in the defense of innocent lives, our own and others.
In Milwaukee, a young retired Marine with a concealed carry permit did just that the other day. He saw a woman being beaten to death in the street, he got out, and used his handgun to stop the aggressor. He didn’t have to shoot the assailant to end the threat but would have been within moral teaching to do so.

Had that young woman been your daughter, or your wife, or your mother, you would be very glad that young man had the right under the 2nd Amendment to possess that weapon, and the sense of charity and moral fortitude to intervene.
St. Gabriel Possenti did much the same thing, when he used a handgun to stop a young woman from being raped by a mob.
I had not heard of St. Gabriel Possenti. Thanks for the info. I looked up more information on him and he is a very interesting saint. One thing that stood out to me was his first name was Francesco. It might not mean anything, but maybe it’s not just a coincidence. Our new Pope may share some characteristics with St. Possenti.St. Gabriel Possenti did much the same thing, when he used a handgun to stop a young woman from being raped by a mob.
