In advance of Pope Francis’ first visit to the United States, American Catholics overwhelmingly approve of the direction in which he is leading the Roman Catholic Church and express a favorable opinion of him personally. Most now say the church is in touch with the needs of Catholics today, far more than said so at the end of the papacy of his predecessor, Pope Benedict XVI, the latest New York Times/CBS News poll finds.

Err, “new” direction? Pope Francis has not changed the doctrine of the Church,
he is pro-life
he is pro traditional marriage
he opposes women priests
he is an orthodox Catholic on all his views concerning faith and morals
his views on unfettered capitalism are actually consistent with the Distributist economic teachings of Popes Leo XIII and Pius XI.

So how is it in any way “new”? He preaches the same gospel as Pope Benedict XVI and Saint John Paul II, he just uses a different style (not that that’s a bad thing in any way, of course).

One of the questions was “In general, do you think the Catholic Church is in touch with the needs of Catholics today, or is it out of touch?”

Personally, I don’t think the Church is out of touch with its flock. It’s flock that is out of touch with the Church.

Most of the questions on the NY Times poll are so vague as to render this poll meaningless.
