Here’s my response…thanks for the addresses, 1ke.

I am appalled by recent statement by Joyce M. Roché claiming that people with “narrow political agendas” have threatened the self-esteem and self-reliance of girls. (http://www.girlsinc.org/ic/intro.php)
Your company is not telling the truth to girls. If Girls, Inc. is so concerned about protecting innocence of young girls pushed into womanhood so fast, then I sincerely hope you do not tell them that you advocate babies being torn limb from limb inside their mother’s wombs. How fortunate you are to be receiving money from parents who chose life.

I fail to see the relation between protecting innocence and girlhood and then teaching them about “safe sex.” Imagine you are 8 years old. Wouldn’t the thought of a male organ penetrating your body completely horrify you? These girls cannot even grasp the idea of mature sexual relationships and how birth control would come into play. Some of these girls barely understand their imminent menstrual cycles and why they even have them.

I support your ideology of teaching girls about responsibility, self-reliance, and innocence, but can these be achieved by aborting babies and using contraception? It is counterproductive. How can a girl be “self-reliant” when she relies on a pill, condom, or any other device to control her body and destiny? Self-reliance means to rely on the self, or, self-control. Self-control means practicing abstinence. I think your company needs to re-examine their values.

As a young child, I read almost all of the American Girls books. I credit American Girls as one of the influences for leading me into my career in American History. But I cannot support your heinous agenda that you present as being good for girls. If you believe I am promoting a narrow agenda, then I suggest you look up “post abortion stress syndrome” and see the consequences of the kind of agenda you are promoting.

I join many of my friends who are parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and so on and will cease to purchase Mattel products once the stance on your ethics has been re-evaluated.

Thank you for your time.

👍 Bravo! :clapping:

I just found out about this! I am so upset! Thanks to all who have written and posted links and information about this topic. I just sent a letter off to the company president and called in a complaint. Here is what I wrote:

**Dear Ms. Brothers,

My mother recently purchased one of the dolls from your Today’s Girl line for my daughter. She also purchased a yellow ball gown set. I would be returning it today but unfortunately although it is only a week in our possession it is already well loved by my daughter. This would have prompted a large purchase of more clothes and “gear” for her upcoming birthday and Christmas however after finding out that your company supports Girl’s Inc., a company which you must know supports abortion and the use of contraception instead of abstinence, we will not be making any future purchases from the American Girl Company. I am very disappointed in your company. You KNOW that you have a huge following of young, impressionable girls and yet you choose to associate with a group that advocates in favor of activities and behaviors that will damage these young girls if they choose to follow the groups advice. Your company is advertised as promoting the health and education of girls today. Well abortion and contraception is not healthy and will not benefit them educationally. I do not have a political agenda. I only have love for my daughter and a hope that she will grow into a healthy, intelligent and informed woman. Not a broken one. Stop supporting this group or you will surely see a decrease in sales as more and more Christians and pro-life supporters find out about your connection. Christmas is on the way!**

I just put about a hundred miles on my car this weekend going to churches and handing out info on this. You would not believe how many people are unaware where their money is going. Even if they aren’t buying the bracelets, where do you think the money for the $50,000 grant comes from?? I went to or faxed 14 churches so far as well as the Christian radio group in our area and the state Right to Life organization. Hopefully word was anounced from many of the pulpits in the area yesterday. I pray that we can make a difference.

Way to go RCC!!! Awesome!

American Girl was on ABC World News last night. They said they won’t stop supporting Girls Inc. Maybe a rally at their stores would wake them up! Chicago AND New York…

Joyce Roche, the president of Girls Inc., said the New York-based organization had never before been targeted by a protest campaign.
“We were taken aback,” she said in a telephone interview Friday. “Our programs are well-respected. We’re all about helping girls see possibilities and dream big dreams.”
She said Girls Inc. takes positions on public policy issues if it believes women’s rights and opportunities are at stake. “Our philosophy is that women should have the right to make decisions about themselves,” Roche said.
Since when did pre-teen and teens become “women”?

KathleenElsie, please keep trying! Their mailboxes could be full (a good thing!). I had no trouble getting mine through.

Now, here’s my response to Girls, Inc. regarding the AP article and statements posted on the GI website:
Joyce Roche, the president of Girls Inc., said the New York-based organization had never before been targeted by a protest campaign.
“We were taken aback,” she said in a telephone interview Friday. “Our programs are well-respected. We’re all about helping girls see possibilities and dream big dreams.”
She said Girls Inc. takes positions on public policy issues if it believes women’s rights and opportunities are at stake. “Our philosophy is that women should have the right to make decisions about themselves,” Roche said. [emphasis added]
This is the quote by Girls Inc. president Joyce Roche from the Associated Press article of October 14, 2005.
Recently, our mission to help girls develop their self-esteem and self-reliance has become the target of false, inflammatory statements from people who are pursuing a narrow political agenda.
This statement is directly from the Girls, Inc. website.

I am a parent of a pre-teen daughter, and I am appalled at what Girls, Inc. represents. Yes, Girls, Inc. does have its good programs, and more power to you for those programs. It is sad, though, that you are teaching very young girls that abortion is an “option” they can choose about their own bodies. It is not your job to teach these girls this. This is what this argument is all about. Its not about the American Family Association coming down on you for " a narrow political agenda". A group of PARENTS, who started this bru-ha-ha, learned about Girls, Inc. through American Girl products. Many of us were not happy to see that our hard-earned money went to support programs such as advocating abortion, same sex lifestyles, and the use of birth control TO PRE-TEENS AND TEENS–our daughters.

I am appalled by both statements above. Let’s start with the one from the AP article. When did pre-teens and teens become “women”? Last I checked a “woman” wasn’t enrolled in elementary school, middle school or high school. These students are GIRLS, not WOMEN. Our girls today grow up way too fast, and this information handed out and/or taught to them contributes to that condition. Its almost like you are telling them …here are your options, but don’t do it i.e. what person doesn’t look down when told “Don’t look down.”

As for the statement from the website, what narrow political agenda am I pursuing? As previously stated, I am a mother of a pre-teen daughter. I am not a political candidate for anything. Besides, what statements were false or inflammatory? Girls, Inc. has admitted to supporting Roe v. Wade. Girls, Inc. supports same-sex relationships. Please let us concerned parents know what statements are false because we don’t see them.

As long as these statements continue, us concerned parents, will continue to show you what we think of your organization, by withholding the Almighty Dollar. We won’t purchase American Girl Products, and they, in turn, won’t have the funds to pass along to your organization.

Thank you for your time,

Well then, they’ve certainly thrown down the gauntlet. I hope they are prepared for the consequences of their decision. I called today and canceled my catalog and told them why. Telling them WHY is the important part!

E-mailed each of them. All three were returned as undeliverable.:banghead:
Try snail mail. I didn’t send email, I sent postal mail.

Obviously their email boxes have become so full with people emailing that they’ve turned off those addresses. That in itself says a lot.

Yes, it does certainly say a lot. I have emailed AND snail-mailed them all 🙂 Doesn’t hurt to litter them with paper as well disrupt their computer server.

Kudos to all taking a stand :clapping:

Bless Drew Mariani for his rage and call for action. He’s a bit over the top and over dramatic in his presentation, but he nails the point right in front of you so you can’t say you didn’t know. 😛

I have a few concerns I’m sure you will put me at ease about:
  1. Isn’t it $0.70 for every dollar of the** I CAN bracelet **which goes toward Girls Inc?
  2. Drew was really pushing Fr. Altier hard today to say now that we’ve heard Drew’s information we would be committing a sin by supporting American Girl at all…I’m not so sure about this.
I can see where buying the I CAN doll and bracelet would be a big sin since we know where that money is going.

But we do not know where the money for the restaurant, clothing, other dolls (not I CAN) and books go.

Is it right to boycott the entire product line of American Girl rather than boycott the I CAN campaign?

If there a ZERO sales of the I CAN dolls and bracelets, doesn’t that show them we are against their venture with Girls Inc.?
  1. But I do see where boycotting the entire line would be the most effective way to get them to pay attention to our complaint, I just don’t see how purchasing anything other than the I CAN products would be sinful. I’m sure someone here can explain it better for me.
  2. Theoretically, American girl will see a dramatic drop in their revenues for the month of October when the sales figures get released. Picketing will be a plus, too, but that, they can ignore. Of course we hope the decline in $$ will be enough to get them to back out of the campaign by mid-November, a week before Thanksgiving perhaps?
IF THIS HAPPENS are we ready to go out and buy American Girl products immediately so they can see a tremendous rise in revenue by December 15th, thus effectively showing them who their financial base really is, and who they can count on later to support their worthwhile cause?

Thank all of you for the info. I listened also to Relevant Radio today and Drew Mariani talked about this issue. I sent off emails to Girls Inc, and American Girl Doll, and neither were returned. Perhaps their mailboxes filled up when people listening to Drew started the emails. I am glad people are attending to this.

yes, .70 of every dollar of bracelet sales goes directly to Girls, Inc. However, American Girl has also pledged a grant of $50,000 in addition to that. Obviously, that money comes from profit from everything else sold in their product line. That’s why we want to boycott all American Girl products.

**Drew Mariani spoke about the American Girl/Girls Inc. Issue for the 3rd time in a row on his show at Relevant Radio (Catholic Family Radio). **

As you may know, Drew Mariani was really the first media outlet to cover the fight against Michael Schaivo in the Teri Schaivo Case. The Drew Mariani show can be heard live in many states in the U.S on the radio & on the internet at this address…

Ahhh…I missed that part. Drew’s show is during my running around to pick up one kid or the other, hubby and errands between work and home so I usually get bits and pieces. Knew you people could clear it up for me. Thanks.

Just a reminder, keep up the emails, snail-mail, and phone calls…keep the pressure on.

I hope you don’t mind someone who is LDS (e.g., a Mormon) chiming in on this subject. My wife and I also do not appreciate the association of Americangirl with Girls, Inc., as the proud parents of a beautiful daughter.

Thus, I have e-mailed AmericanGirl and Mattel and informed them of our decision to no longer purchase their products until this association is terminated due to Girls, Inc’s support for abortion and its overt encouragement of homosexual behavior to minor aged children.
