Among Republicans, Catholics stand with Pope Francis on the environment

With the exception of New Mexico, the top states that take the most in govt taxes are red states. Given that they are also some of the poorest states, we need to really concentrate on why/how these republican states have created these pockets of despair in our country. What in their policies and economic environments foster poverty? If we want to reduce government spending on handouts to people in need, we need to start coming up with state policies that reduce the reasons why people are dependent on the govt.

States that take more in federal taxes than they pay: #1 is S. Carolina; then N. Dakota, Alabama, Mississippi, N. Mexico. (2015, Wallethub).

The poorest state in the US: #1 Mississippi; then W Virginia, Alabama, S. Carolina, N. Mexico. (Forbes, 2014).
This includes Military spending , govt pensions and SS payments . Are these Govt Handouts? New Mexico :“takes” the most because of the large number of retirees that live there. Mississippi , Alabama and S Carolina have large military installations.

New Mexico also has 3 military bases, 2 government labs, and a large percentage of the population needing food stamps and Medicaid. So, yes, we are hugely dependent on the feds here. In fact, Governor Martinez went along with Medicaid expansion due to the “good of the citizens of New Mexico”, even though she had qualms about it - and also went along with authorizing a state-run Obamacare exchange.

Not this Catholic! His Holiness may have a degree in chemistry, or so I’ve heard. But he’s no climatologist. He’s being deluded by liberal elites that are not only hostile to the Church, but to the working class he professes to support. Sure the Earth is getting warmer. Has been since the last ice age. And a slight tilt in the Earth’s orbit can do weird things. But human activity accelerating “climate change”? Jury is still out. And there has been too much cooking and cherry-picking of data by supporters of the man-made climate change idea
What I don’t understand is why only Francis gets singled out on this among recent Popes. Were Benedict and JP2 also deluded by liberals? According to Catholic Answers apologist Fr Grondin, Francis is merely following in the footsteps of his predecessors on the environment.

Benedict spoke of the increasingly clear scientific research demonstrating the impact of human actions.

JP2 spoke of the crisis due to industrial growth, waste, the burning of fossil fuels, unrestricted deforestation, and the use of herbicides, coolants, and propellants.

Uh, thank you (?) for answering my question posed to the other poster, Ringil.

Pockets of despair? If you want to know what a state dominated by conservatives is capable of, you might try looking at the state of Texas which has created millions of jobs and has a booming economy. South Carolina also has attracted businesses such as Boeing due to its pro-business climate created by Republicans, in contrast to the Democrat philosophy which considers businesses as evil.

Keep trying, anthrogirl.

So consider military pay and military pensions to be government handouts?

No. But, so-called “dependence on the government” includes military bases and other federal institutions. The labs and militiary bases are a huge part of New Mexico’s economy - so much so that closing one (or even reducing stafff) severely affects the state’s econmony. Seriously - it’s almost as if New Mexico’s econmomy is as dependent on federal government jobs as Michigan is on the automobile industry.
