An altar with severed heads

Reminds me of the catecombs and the Martyrs under the alter.

I like it, it’s very beautiful and thought provoking
 
I am not absolutely opposed to this, but I do think I’d find it distracting, at least at first.
 
It is a bit much. I did like the door to the basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri(St. Mary of the Angels and Martyrs) in Rome though.

I’d like one which recalls the image in Revelation of the souls under the altar- I would think that they’d have more than just their heads, though.
 
Idi Amin, the dictator who ruled Uganda in the seventies, was reported to have kept several of his enemies’ severed heads in a refrigerator. He would take them out from time to time and gloat over them. Even so, he didn’t go to the grotesque extreme of displaying them as part of an altar.

If I was in that parish supporting it with my hard earned money, I would feel robbed! Robbed I tell you!

A tasteful painting of the last supper could be put in front of those heads while they decide what to replace that with.
 
The liturgical calendar has the 1st, 2d, and 3d findings of the head of John the Baptist.

And there is an Orthodox church with each of the three !

Not quite. I can think of 2 churches which are uglier but am afraid to post them because I might get banned.
 
I agree, it’s not that it’s offensive, I saw where you shared a link about the sedlec ossuary (which I find quite interesting), it’s that it’s kind of unappealing
 
It looks like they are of the Roman emperors and empresses who initiated the persecutions. I recognized Hadrian’s down on the bottom row right off of the bat. I guess it was symbolizing the Eucharist’s triumph over evil/persecution.
 
There is a church made of real skulls and bones in Croatia I think. To commemorate the sufferings during the great plague. That should top this one.
 
Oh …

Only last night I was drawn into watching a science program about how long consciousness lasts post a beheading by guillotine which lead onto this morning about the repatriation of severed heads. Shudders … Most morbid.

Then this evening i am now reading about this post about an alter with severed heads. Not sure what to make of this.
