An Awkward Question

My best friend just told me today that her mother does not want her using tampons because they will “make her lose her virginity.” My best friend still wants to use them, but she is not sure if it will take away her virginity. I told her I did not think so, because to lose one’s virginity meant doing…you know what I’m talking about. She still was not so sure. Was I right in what I said? Is it morally okay to use a tampon? I’ve never really considered it before. What constitutes losing one’s virginity? I ask this question in all honesty, and comments would be welcome. Thanks.

No using a tampon does not make one lose ones virginity. Yes it is of course moral to use a tampon. However it is also true that children are supposed to respect their parents, and, while living with them, obey them. So that might effect your friends situation.
 
I knew a fundamentalist Baptist girl whose mother said the same thing… Bizarre. Of course it’s fine to use a tampon. Ending one’s virginity entails a consensual sex act with someone else.
 
:dts: Your friend’s mother should have known better than that! After all, she did conceived your friend. So, how could she have come up with that baloney! lol. I suspect that her mom prolly is using tampons and it also sounds like a control issue with your friend. 🤷
 
I am assuming that it has to do with proof of virginity which in old times was an intact hymen. In the old days (and still continued in some cultures) an intact hymen was proof of virginity.

This is also what the Church Fathers refer to when they state the Mary’s virginity was preserved in childbirth (ie her hymen remained intact).
 
Thanks for clarifying. I was going to say that, because she did mention about that (though she did not call it a hymen; in teenage terms its referred to as a “cherry”, excuse the awkwardness) and how if its gone then she wouldn’t be a virgin any more. Thanks for answering my unasked part of the question. 🙂
 
This friend’s mother would be shocked to know you can lose your hymen by riding a bike or horse, gymnastics, and other vigorous activities. Some girls are born with very little hymen tissue.

This woman is seriously weird.

I have never heard of such. I think it only be done by a sex act alone.
 
To Becca, I’m not speaking of losing virginity, that requires sex, but rather of losing the hymenal tissue. Totally separate thing. You can lose your hymen with vigorous activity, but remain a virgin. Hope that’s clear. 🙂

True. I clean stalls at a horse ranch (I’m not a rider - I like solid ground), and I’ve heard about this.

I don’t see how tampons could violate a woman’s virginity.

No, and it’s possible for a woman to become inseminated as a result of sexual activity without breaking the hymen too.
 
When I did a brief stint in Catholic school, waaaaay before I ever gave any thought to converting a teacher who was doing “sex Ed” said that there was nothing morally wrong with using tampons but if a young lady was able to use one bigger than the most narrow or “teen” variety it’s a good chance she is no longer a virgin. Eighth grade was a long while ago and I still remember knowing how dangerous it was for an “educator” to give misinformation about such a senastive topic.

Talk about embarrassing for the girl with a need to use a bigger tampon.

I wonder if she meant that a non-virgin was more likely to be able to use the larger size, not that the larger size caused non-virginity?

Again, wrong idea. It’s kind of sad how this stuff was taught, and worse that it still is today.
And, good point that you can get pregnant without, well…penetration.
