Well, it’s what she meant, but it’s inaccurate. If a girl has a heavier flow, she may need the larger size, and things do…stretch if necessary. Virginity has nothing to do with using a bigger tampon, although using that bigger size might be uncomfortable at first.

My friend’s very traditional Chinese mom said the same thing to her. It’s a sad misconception =( To think that some girls have to use pads because their mother isn’t OK with tampons/menstrual cups is just terrifying to me. I would have gone crazy.

Oh, silly.

To lose your virginity is to have sex, period.
Tampons are totally fine to use.

There is this value where you have to respect your parents, but there is nothing that says we can’t correct our parents in areas where we believe them to be wrong (especially if it’s something as trivial as tampons). And certainly I see no disrespect if your friend were to tell her mom, “mom, no, it’s just a tampon and it does not make me lose my virginity.”

Also btw I never use tampons, only pads haha.

Yeah, your friend’s mom is definitely wrong. Can’t your friend just go to the store, buy tampons, and use them? It doesn’t really need to be something that anyone else has to know about.

It still astonishes me the ignorance of tampons in this day and age. There are parents on my daughter’s swim team that won’t let their 14 year old girls swim at meets because they don’t want them to use tampons when on their period. Its an aid, an tool to help girls and women cope or deal with their monthly menstruation, its not an indication of their sexual activity or their virginity. Sheesh.

There is no risk of loss of virginity whatsoever with tampon use.

There is however a slight risk of the disease TSS. (Toxic Shock Syndrome.) It is very rare, but possible. So if the mother was concerned with* that* it would make more sense. But the other is just being misinformed.

Agreed, especially if say there had been another family member/friend who had developed TSS.
