I think the long lives were a sign of the covenant between God and man. All flesh on earth was and is mortal. The human body before sin was a visible sign of Adam’s place at the summit of creation. When Adam broke the covenant the human body remained a sign of God’s covenant albeit now broken as was the covenant. The age of Cain and his descendants aren’t mentioned. Their lives are marked by the sin of their patriarch. I think the ancient bodies of the Seth’s line were a visible sign of the original immortal life in Paradise for the descendants of Cain.
The number of years they lived were synchronous with the cosmos. Enoch’s body who’s father was the second oldest patriarch and who’s son was the oldest, was a special sign of the Gospel living 365 years then God took him. An earthly life that didn’t end in death a sign of God’s intention for human life. A year of years. Then the number of weeks from creation to flood can be calculated.by the number of years the patriarchs lived.
By using the ages of the Patriarch’s one can calculate the number of weeks from creation to the day of the flood. It equals 86,400 and that’s the amount of seconds in a day. So there seems to be some cosmic synchronicity happening in their lives. Unless the author did that on purpose.
I just doubt they knew how many seconds in a 24 hour period back then. But it works well with the sign of the covenant being the human body.
