You must have the self-control of a SAINT. I would have probably gone for her throat right there in the pew!At Mass this morning, my 2 year old was being relatively well behaved. We had to step out with her once because she started throwing a fit about something, but otherwise it was a good Mass. She had her soft puppy toy to play with. She quietly was playing by herself. And then THIS happened.
At the peace offering, the woman in front of us turned around. She took my little girl’s hand (fine) she got close to my daughter’s face (awkward) and said in gruff voice “Peace, you little turd. Now be quiet.”
NOTHING about this seemed like a joke or like she was trying to be playful. It took me a second to even register what had just happened! My daughter was stunned by it, too. After the woman turned around, my daughter sat startled and then started crying. I was SO upset. I wanted to tell that woman how entirely out of line she was for being so aggressive with my child. I wouldn’t and couldn’t cause a scene at Mass. But the mama bear in me RAGED with this.
I feel so strongly that we should raise our children to see the Mass as a time for worship. If she is acting up, I will step out with her. I calm her down, we go back in. Wash, rinse, repeat. But I am not going to take her out with every little noise she makes, or every time she wiggles or accidentally drops something. I feel like we are One Body in this Church, and that includes children.
Rant over. Thanks.![]()

The Bklyn Italian in me would have made a wise— remark or if startled, a roundhouse slap. She touched the kid and went in her face.:hug1:
Did your old parish in Brooklyn have a crying room? The one I go to does not and a couple of the others I have been to does not. Just curious–I have a toddler and wish they did.The Bklyn Italian in me would have made a wise— remark or if startled, a roundhouse slap. She touched the kid and went in her face. You should contact the Priest for sure ,she sounds like a crackpot and could do worse in future. The Parish where we are now in 'burbs has no crying room so my husband (new convert) isn’t used to small kids in Mass acting up. We are happy to see families and shouldn’t laugh but can’t help it sometimes. You all look so frazzled, I mean , they are kids, I don’t expect them to stay quiet and still all the time. As for the person with the four grown kids, we know you are glad its someone elses turn
I feel so bad for you , I hope your little girl isn’t put off from attending Mass now. ( I was annoyed one time with an older kid about ten, he seemed to be trying to wear his Mom down to leave. That was a guy that should have gotten “the wooden spoon” LOL).
LOL. My mom’s wooden spoon is curved from overuse! Nah…she stirred and threatened with it more than used it on us.That was a guy that should have gotten “the wooden spoon” LOL
I never heard of a crying room until I moved out of the city. But then again, I was in the same two parishes all my growing years.Did your old parish in Brooklyn have a crying room? I would have too, though I do not consider it a true loss of charity as such behavior is beyond what I think needs silence. I would have responded out loud using her exact words as in, “You called a two-year old a turd as you wished peace??? What is wrong with you!” I would have picked up my family and moved to a different part of the church. I would not deem that it was me making the disruption, but that this woman is the responsible party.I would have lost charity right there and then. Talk about selfishness.
