My husband’s cousin has chosen a Masonic church as the setting for her wedding. It is very beautiful. It will be a Christian wedding.

There is no such thing as a Masonic church. There are buildings where they meet. Every Mason I’ve met was a Christian, including several ministers and a Roman Catholic priest! No reason you shouldn’t attend, unless it makes you uncomfortable.

I’ve heard the Masons are Satanic–whether theistic or aesthetic ones, I know not, but I know they are very anti-Catholic and surrounded by secrecy. I know I would never willingly walk into one of their churches and I don’t think it’s appropriate.

Well, they call them “temples…”

From what I’ve heard, the Masons, at least the ones higher up, are very anti-Catholic and that only these higher-ups know the true motives of the group. It is a mortal sin to join them. I would stay away from them and their temples if it could at all be helped.

To join freemasonry used to be an excommunication, and is now considered grave sin. If the couple is Catholic I would have doubts about attending. If not, I wouldn’t worry about it too much. Be a witness to the Christian faith!

If you know a Roman Catholic Priest who is a Mason, that is a problem. Catholics are not been permitted to join the Masons.

Here are some links for more information on the Catholics and Masons issue:

For the original question, there is nothing stopping you from attending the non-catholic wedding in the Masonic building or any other venue. You might want to ask your cousin about the choice of venue and minister. Unless there is some masonic element in the ceremony you are going to show love and support for the couple, not the building.

Masonic Temple.

I was a member of an organization that held an event at a Masonic Temple one time. It had very beautiful architecture and windows. Another member of that organization was a Mason, and gave a tour to a bunch of us, and I went on it. We went through libraries, letter-writing rooms, etc. As the rest of the tour group filed out of the main meeting-room, I asked the keeper-type person who had been unlocking doors for us what the use of a particular object in that room was.

He hesitated a moment, then told me, “That’s the altar.”

It’s easy to forget that they’re more than just social clubs and fundraisers.

You don’t know what you are talking about and should stop.

Freemasons are not satanic. My father was three time Grand Master of his lodge. I can assure you that they are not satanists. Nor are they secret - secret organizations don’t put their gathering halls on Main St. in every city. Some of their functions and literature are private but every organization has a things that they don’t share with the general public.

I have been to picnics, dinners and other events sponsored by the Freemasons. It is not a sin to gather with nice people and have a good time.

What is a sin is joining their organization, swearing their oaths and participating in their rituals. This is because they swear an oath which states that members will defer to freemasonry when there is a question on matters of faith and morals. This is not consistent with Catholicism which believes that God placed authority on matters of faith and morals in the hands of the Catholic Church. You can’t serve two masters.

Masonic Temple.
In my neck of the woods, they are called “lodges” and they seem to be slowly tearing them down.

That said, they do do good humanitarian work including the Shriners et al. But then so do a lot of other groups who aren’t exactly admired by or in communion with the local diocese.

I’m a Mason - and as far as I know there is no Masonic wedding rite. I’d recommend conforming that the wedding will be a Chrstian one performed by a Christian minister of some sort.

The Masonic funeral rite is horrid from a Christian standpoint, so I urge caution and would get details.

As for rumors that Masons steal babies and eat them, these rumors are incorrect. We pay full price for the babies.

Personally, I wouldn’t touch a masonic building with a ten foot pole. .

I do not believe freemasons have churches but meeting halls or lodges.

Masonry is not synonymous with Christianity or Catholicism. Actually it is the complete opposite! If you are a freemason, you are excommunicated from the Catholic Church automatically. I recommend you to read “Darkness Visible” by Walton Hannah which I reviewed on my blog (see below) since it is a Christian appraisal of freemasonry.

God bless!

I played music for a dance at a Masonic Lodge…had nothing to do with religion. 👍

Freemasonry is categorically opposed to Catholicism and to be a member of a Masonic organization is a grave sin.
