Popemobile for sale? Ebay bids top $1 million
German seller says 'it drives like heaven’

ROME - A second hand car once said to be registered in the name of Joseph Kardinal Ratzinger – the new Pope Benedict - is up for sale on eBay and the sky seems to be the limit when it comes to bidding.

The vehicle, a metallic grey 1999 Volkswagen Golf, went up for auction on the German site (www.ebay.de) at a minimum price of 9,900 euros ($12,790) on Wednesday and, just over 24 hours and more than 300 bids later, the price had hit one million euros ($1.3 million).

German Web site n-tv.de identified the seller as Benjamin Halbe, 21, from the town of Olpe in Germany’s Sauerland region, who said he bought the car from a local dealer in January.

“It drives like heaven,” the site quoted Halbe as saying.

The Web site of the German newspaper Bild quoted an eBay spokeswoman in Germany as saying the online auctioneer had checked with the vehicle licensing office which had confirmed the name of the original owner was genuine.

Ratzinger, who is from Bavaria in southern Germany, has been at the Vatican for more than two decades and is not known to drive. The Vatican was not available for comment on the auction, which closes on May 5 at 7.30 p.m…

The auction site describes the vehicle as a two liter gas-powered manual, with 75,000 km (47,000 miles) on the odometer since it was first registered in March 1999.

“Does black smoke or white smoke come out of the exhaust pipe?” one posting on the site asked - a reference to the signal used at the Vatican to show whether a new pope has been elected by the secret conclave of cardinals.

“Very funny,” was the reply.

I have come to the cunclusion that they are related to vampires:mad:

It’s just a used car, not a consecrated host or religious item. I see nothing to get upset about.

It is the mockery and novelty I am disgusted with:mad:

I think that anything that the current Pope Benedict XVI or Pope John Paul II has ever given to someone will be an item of worth and people may try to cash in on it. Actually, it is because they have celebrity status.

Thats whats bothering me too. Sell it as Joseph Ratzingers old car but don’t put all the extra crappola in the ad! If they did this type of thing to other religions you can bet your boots there would be A LOT of screaming, lawsuits and most likely a ‘jihad!’

Seems like a very good way to make a lot of money. Novelty shouldn’t be a problem, where is the mockery ?

Let me get something off my chest:

GROW UP!!!

We’re talking about a used car, not the Eucharist.

I find this thread extremely offensive. It makes me ashamed to be “related” to a bunch of crybabies. It makes the Church look bad. It makes Christianity look bad. The Church doesn’t need any more bad press.

It’s a used car, for Pete’s sake.

Ashamed to be related to a bunch of cry babies, that is offensive:mad: What is offensive about this is they will use anything Church related to “cash in” In the advertisement and the article they point to the Pope and the Church.SOME SISTERS FROM MOTHER TERESA’S ORDER GAVE ME A PIECE OF THE BLANKET SHE USED IN LIFE:nope: It is the point of someone cashing in does not seem right and no it isn’t the Eucharist thank God,but it is bad taste nevertheless.I wouldn’t sell that piece of her blanket:nope:

This auction seems to be the listing, though it’s not as high as the article states. Maybe some bogus bids were cancelled. Also, it started for 9,999 Euros, not 9,900. Can anybody read this?

No I can’t make it out:confused:

I see no problem. Besides whomever pays that much for a VW Golf is dumb anyway.

GROW UP? I happen to have the opinion that my faith is being mocked. Theres NOTHING childish in standing up for what someone believes. If anything why don’t you get some backbone and stand up for your faith instead of accepting mockery. Its ppl like you who make the rest of us look cowardly.

I am confused, why are people so upset? http://bestsmileys.com/signs6/12.gif

The problem I see is not in the sale of a used car allegedly owned by the Pope, but it would be a problem if we respond in the same manner about this as we did a consecrated Eucharist.

It is one thing if the sale of the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of our Lord occurs; it is a completely different issue if a person is willing to purchase a used car under the guise of being the Pope’s used vehicle. The buyer seems gullable if you ask me. http://community.the-underdogs.org/smiley/happy/dunce.gif

We only fan the flames and bring more attention to something that should just suffocate under the weight its own ignorance, if we cry out because of this.

We do not want to confuse people by elevating this to the importance of the Eucharist.

If we respond as if this were a sacred item then we water down the Truth of our legitimate cause. The goal is getting the Eucharist banned from sale on eBay. We must choose our battles wisely, so we garner the greatest amount of support for the most important issue, an issue worthy of our concern. We will never get every one to stop hating us, we will never get people to stop pushing us, they tempt us into anger and sin we must not take the bait. http://bestsmileys.com/tempted/3.gif

I am not trying to minimize the fact that Catholic bashing is the last allowable bigotry, but we must also not become confused with what is important. Even Jesus would ask us not to worry over this matter. It is a **car **being sold by an ignorant soul. Our efforts are best put forth to pray for the conversion of the hearts of this individual and those like this individual.

The car is not our Lord and although the individual selling it may be offensive or trying to make a dig at us, Jesus never said it would be easy to walk in his footsteps. "You will be hated by all because of my name, but whoever endures to the end will be saved. Mathew 10:22.

Well put PUMPKIN!!! 👍 I too have no idea why this is a problem, unless the glove box was a tabernacle. I feel more comfortable with selling a car than relics of saints, which is very common on ebay.

Good point, Jackman.

By the way, is it wrong that I thought the white/black smoke comment was kind of funny?

I’m sorry, this just doesn’t conjure up the same disgust for me as did the sale of Christ Himself. It’s a car! Cars can be bought and sold. So what if the person wants to tell us who used to own it when he sells it? The fact that it used to belong to our Holy Father is really cool, in my opinion, and I don’t think there’s anything wrong with somebody making available a piece of Papal history, however minor.

I do have one problem with the listing. In it the seller states: “This is not an ordinary car. Your driving will always be save and blessed in it.” Obviously this is a bit superstitious, but I can’t see how it is offensive enough to demand the listing be withdrawn or blame ebay for more anti-Catholicism.

edit

I want to add that around here, 1999 VW Golfs go for anywhere between 6 and 9 thousand dollars depending on the make and condition (according to Kelly Blue Book). The seller listed his starting price at 10,000 Euros which, taking into account that Germany’s economy is stronger, doesn’t seem to be an outrageous asking price. The fact that others are apparently willing to pay a whole lot more does not mean that the seller was looking to rip off Catholics.

I do not put this near the Eucharist either:( I have stated my reasons above,I do not consider our Pope or his past possesions as a novelty item to be used as a get rich quick scheme:nope: I do not by the way remember comparing the care to the Eucharist:mad: You are all entitled to your oppinions about this as I am mine, there is no reason to be insulting about it if you disagree.I am not by the way speaking to all posters;)

I think that’s a rather hasty judgment. The timing certainly looks like they’re trying to “cash in”, but we don’t know their hearts. Perhaps they sincerely need the money. As I stated before, I don’t think their starting price was outrageous. Is it so bad to let people know that they car used to belong to the Pope?

Look I am broke and in danger of being homeless, okay:( I was given a piece of Mother Teresas blanket by the head sister of her order in Memphis, but I wouldn’t think about trying to sell it to the highest bidder. If I am looking at this wrong please tell me what I am not understanding:confused:
