Dr. Colossus:
I think that’s a rather hasty judgment. The timing certainly looks like they’re trying to “cash in”, but we don’t know their hearts. Perhaps they sincerely need the money. As I stated before, I don’t think their starting price was outrageous. Is it so bad to let people know that they car used to belong to the Pope?
Look I am broke and in danger of being homeless, okay:( I was given a piece of Mother Teresas blanket by the head sister of her order in Memphis, but I wouldn’t think about trying to sell it to the highest bidder. If I am looking at this wrong pleases tell me what I am not understanding:confused:

My point is that the car, unlike most relics such as your Mother Teresa blanket, has an intrinsic material value regardless of the fact that it used to belong to Cardinal Ratzinger, and that the starting bid does not seem to be a terribly outrageous asking price even for a “regular” 99 VW Golf.

Actually, if anything, I would think we might feel impressed that Pope Benedict is so loved already, especially in Germany where I’ve heard that Catholicism is on the wain, that they’re willing to pay so much for a vehicle simply because he previously owned it. Someone cares enough about the provinance of the vehicle to pay real money to get it. Perhaps someone who has a car museum, perhaps someone who collects things that belong to celebrities, but in their warped way, they’re paying him respect.

I can live with that.

That occurred to me, too. I remember people wondering how long (if ever) the next Pope would achieve the “rock star” status that John Paul the Great had. I think Benedict XVI is already there.
