London, England (AHN) - The decision of the Church of England to allow women bishops has spurred the Anglican Bishop of Ebbsfleet to defect to the Roman Catholic Church.

The Rt. Rev. Andrew Burnham said he asked Pope Benedict XVI and English Catholic bishops to show magnanimous gestures that would permit the traditionalist Anglicans to defect en masse to the Catholic faith. Burnham has spoken in Rome with Cardinal Levada, the head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, and Cardinal Kasper, the head of ecumenism of Vatican.

With Burnham during his visit to the Holy See was Rt. Rev. Keith Newton, the Bishop of Richborough, who is expected to follow Burnham’s footsteps.

Burnham said he hopes the Catholic Church would allow former Anglican clergy to stay in their parishes, under the supervision of a Catholic bishop. Majority of Anglican parishes already use Roman liturgy. But the issue of married bishops must be resolved first because celibacy is a requirement among Roman and Orthodox clergy…Read More

That’s either a misleading headline, or an incomplete story. Nowhere in the article does it actually state the bishop is leaving the Church of England. Instead, he’s apparently wheeling and dealing with Rome to try and get a more favorable situation for him and his followers to convert. In the absence of any action by Rome, there doesn’t appear to be any guarantee that he’ll actually leave the Anglican Church.

I hope they can work things out, but the content of this article is suspect due to the author’s ignorance on the matter of celibacy (bolded above).
  1. Orthodox/Eastern Rite clergy are not required to be celibate, unless they were unmarried when they received Holy Orders. IOW a priest can’t get married, but a married man may become a priest. Bishops can’t be married.
  2. The Church can make dispensation for married priests from the Anglican Church (and other churches) to convert and remain a priest in the Roman Rite. I have met a married Catholic priest who was a Presbyterian minister before his conversion.

This story is also being reported in the Telegraph.

See here.

This seems to be a very good thing. A partial reunification of the Church of England that appears to leave those who are seriously separated from Rome behind while those who never actually strayed very far come back to full communion.

If this turns out to be true, this would be a wonderful thing. I pray that it does.

On the other hand, the remains of the Anglican Church will become increasing less relevant as their doctrine and teachings seem to have no firm basis and change with the winds of fashion.

This is an article from the Vatican that says, it prevents the Anglican reunification with the Catholic church. Sad to see this happen in so many ways.
As this is the very issue that is driving away the Tranditionalists in the Anglican Church, I can only assume that this would not be a stumbling block for this possible partial reunification.

And yes, this was very sad.

Why can’t women be bishops? They don’t have a penis to rape little boys with?

This talks about the situation with the Anglican’s as a whole. It will not pose problems with the traditionalists that want to return home to Rome.
In fact it may help bring a large number of Anglicans under this Bishop into communion with Rome at a pace unknown for any group (or rite) of believers in the History of the Church. God works wonders despite those that seem to be hell bent:)

Let us pray for Bishop “Andy” as he seeks Gods will…

Awesome! I’m glad he had the courage to stand up and do the right thing! 👍 That is just cool! Now maybe he’ll come home to Rome. :extrahappy:
