No more or less than yours does. That He is

the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceedeth from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son together is worshipped and glorified,
who spake by the prophets.
Yeah, well that’s NOT the same thing as being the vicar of Christ.

A vicar is subservient to whom he represents.

Surely your church does not profess that the HS is subservient to Christ.

I know my Church certainly doesn’t!

Note to self: Do not joke with PRmerger.

As a fellow believer in the Anglican Tradition, to answer your question simply, no.

I know that personal emotions or feelings are not proof, however, as a former Anglo Catholic who attended one of the very well known highest of the high Anglo Catholic parishes around, I always knew that when I was asked are you Catholic and I would say “yes”, of course thinking I really needed to explain it, that I way not being truthful.

Our parish was more Catholic in the sense of the way the Mass was celebrated, all the kneeling, genuflecting, beautiful vestments etc. that even Catholic seminarians would attend the Christmas midnight mass, even still I knew that I was part of the Episcopal church and that we were not Catholic.

Looking back on those years, yes most of the priests were sincere, however, I do believe that for some it was like playing house and that would make them Catholic.

If someone wants to claim to be Catholic then why not become part of the One, Holy, Apostolic, Catholic Church, that until the last 50 years or so everyone believed it was the only Catholic Church.

I don’t really understand what seems to be such a strong desire by many to be considered Catholic and not just be proud of whatever denomination they belong to.

The last 50 years or so? Tell that to the Orthodox. Tell that to the Copts.Tell that to the Old Catholics. Tell that to the Reformers.

In some cases, it comes from a definition of what Catholic means. And not all say it is being in communion with Papa.

As I have said before, I mark Catholic as all possessing valid apostolic succession (you will recall that I am familiar with Apostolicae curae, I think).

But no one need agree with me on the point. I don’t mind.

We are not talking about the Orthodox Church. As far as the Reformers go, I never met one who claimed to be Catholic.

As a former Anglican, brought up in low church and a very large parish, no one knew they were Catholic, certainly my parents didn’t know and were somewhat prejudice against the Catholic Church.

It is just common sense to know that until recently Protestants were proud to be protestant and now many don’t even want to admit they are protestant, however, it seems that some Anglicans (but not all) as well as Lutherans want to be considered Catholic.

Just because one might believe certain traditions that come from the Catholic Church, does not a Catholic make, the same goes for Catholics who might accept certain hymns or gifts of the Holy Spirit make them Pentecostal or Protestant.

Do you actually identify yourself as Catholic if going into the hospital or when being asked which church you attend, do you say St. Mark’s (Anglican or Lutheran Catholic Church)?

I really am curious as to why in this day and age so many feel such a strong need to be considered Catholic. It would be appreciated to understand and maybe one of the posters can explain this need.

God Bless

An Episcopal priest friend states that he is Catholic but not Roman. When he became the rector of a parish, he made it very high church. Only problem, they were low church before.

Yeah. That’s what I thought.

So, again, to repeat my original point: you all can start calling yourselves Catholic when you acknowledge that my vicar of Christ is your vicar of Christ.

Why do you all want to be called Catholic anyway? I don’t get it. 🤷

It’s like me wanting to claim the name Jehovah’s Witness. While I certainly try to be a witness for Jehovah/Yahweh/Adonai/the Lord…I know, acknowledge, accept that the JWs are a separate entity from my Catholic Church.

Perhaps you might want to retract your statement, Kj.

Was it not you who made this assertion?

So, yes, it was indeed you who proclaimed this assertion. :yup:

I asked how you know this.

Could you please answer that question.

And also back up your assertion.
It is hard for me to come up with a document which doesn’t say something.

Yep. You made a claim you can’t back up.

QED.
Yet, the Roman Catholic Church has never questioned the Orthodox churches when they self-identify as Catholic.
Quod gratis asseritur, gratis negatur.
Translated: an assertion was made with no grounds whatsoever by Kj.

We may (and indeed are obligated to) ignore and reject his assertion.

I hope you don’t mind it, PRm, if I suggest that your posts are not brimful of good humour and fellowship.
