The head of the Church of England is presently in Rome for a multi-day visit with Pope Benedict XVI.
It is interesting that this week the Vatican announced a new effort to draw into the Catholic fold those Anglicans who oppose ordination of women and of homosexuals, as well as other changes in their church.
According to Vatican news reports, the visiting English primate will officiate at a religious function in a major Roman basilica at the conclusion of his visit. This seems strange to me. Would the Pope be allowed to celebrate Mass in a major CofE church in London?

“officiating at a religious function” is not the ame thing as “Celebrating Mass.”

Back in the 1970s – before the chaos got so entrenched in the Anglican Communion – the Archbishop of Canterbury, Michael Ramsay, gave an address at Evening Prayer in St. Patrick’s Cathedral. We High Church Anglicans were all nearly jumping out of our seats hoping that there would be a decisive statement about moves towards reunion.

Sigh. In order to reunite, we had to cross the Tiber one by one.

I’m good with that now. Think how frightful it would be if Rome had endorsed Communion with Canterbury, and then had to watch it explode right inside the house . . . :bigyikes:

Well, in terms of “major” ones, except for Saint Paul’s (the old one burned), all of the one’s in London were Holy Mother Church’s to begin with. So it wouldn’t be so odd!
