Should I go after Mai-Otome? I recall that it’s a yuri?
Mai Otome isn’t really yuri. It has some girls blushing at other girls, but we all know that many young women do get infatuated with other girls - but it doesn’t lead to sexual things and they grow out of it when they later meet the opposite sex. Sort of idol worship.

Really? Then what’s with the fans telling me that it’s a yuri? This is most perplexing.

Basically what Tenofovir described- lots of girls blushing and very concerned about other girls, but no spelled-out lesbianism. Maybe it’s just really easy to read that into it.
Point taken. It’s disgusting that there’s plenty of yurishipping fans of that series. Then again, it can also be the case for Sailor Moon, especially Sailor Moon R. shudders

That said, I had found about the series called Yuru Yuri and the amount of yuri in it is completely facepalmworthy.

To be fair, a lot of shipping is weird. But if you’re watching a series called Yuru Yuri, I would think yuri would be a given. 😛

Sailor moon is interesting because it also has a lot of appeal with other groups, not just yurishippers. I’ve never seen it, though. The designs bother me for some reason. :o When I want to watch a kids anime, I usually pick Digimon.

Indeed. Hence, whenever I see Yuru Yuri fans trying to recruit me, I am justified to retaliate if their methods go into the coercive state.

I’ve watched Sailor Moon, to be fair. I do agree with you that it has a very broad appeal. I’m annoyed at the yurishippers because it is that group which had made a controversial Sailor Moon shipping war a few years ago.

I’m pretty sure shipping is just like that for some people. I mostly only ship canon pairings, so I don’t get hit with much of it. 🤷 Anyway, it shouldn’t be taken too seriously. 😛

I do ship canon pairings most of the time. There are times that I don’t go for canon pairings, but that’s quite rare. 🙂
For instance, I do ship two characters from the season 4 of the Digimon series. 🙂

People see yuri everywhere. I thought it was an anime without male characters - sans one guy - to increase the amount of screen time pretty girls get. I guess there are one or two yuri characters there, but most of it is innocent. It’s not an anime for lesbians or promoting lesbianism. It’s an anime for guys to see pure girl-girl emotional relationships. (Friendships in a sort of comrade-in-arms type setting.)

For many of us such pure expression of female emotion leads to tears of happiness… ^;_;^ and tears run down my cheeks as I think about the deep intense emotions of camaraderie … (I exaggerate in typical fashion, of course)

Oscars or Cannes films can take a hike. This is pure anime emotion. Roger Ebert go away - you know nothing.
:D:D

Exactly. Thank you for hitting the nail on the head. 🙂

It’s an innocent show, my friend. But sure, people can read what they want into it. There is no lesbian sex there or similar. And it’s not at all like Marimite I think. Not that I could stand Marimite - watched only about 10min of it. Mai Hime and Mai Otome I could watch both series although never finished Otome (got > half way).

It’s as YURI as Vividred Operation, which is also a show I recommend.

No pesky guys to cloud things over. Just friends fighting bad guys to save earth and each other.

This reminds me of how the Sexual Devolution turned simple male friendships into gay romances. So it has that effect on female friendships as well?

Also, what is Vividred Operation? O:

I wouldn’t be surprised, but I think girls do more that could be mistaken for romantic feelings anyway. Guys are kind of paranoid about others perceptions, I think. Many girls have no problem with emotional closeness (not all, but lots). So while it’s definitely possible to read two girls who are very concerned about each other as “lesbian relationship!” It could also just be two straight girls who are really close best friends. Or who want to be best friends, I guess. Of course, anime exaggerates what this looks like.

Come to think of it, I’ve never seen a show with no boys in it, and have absolutely no desire to start now. They’re usually aimed at guys. 🤷
