Look at most 2D anime. Not much in way of filters and effects, or at least much of a resultant effect. And many shows still have low frame rates, or often show stills of character faces, especially when employing a o_O or >_< type expressions.

I just think that anime is still mainly old school. More old school than the type of animation employed by South Park or Pixar.
Well, yeah. I’m sure they make it on computers, but it’s still “hand-drawn”. It’s just that they draw on computers instead of paper now. 😃

What I’m curious about is the colors. Do they draw colors in, or just sort of click and fill them in? Mix of both? Depends on the show?

I must be on an anime kick. I just finished watching Fairy Tail, they only had season 1 on netflix. I enjoyed it, despite it being pretty predictable and repetitive.

I have now started Chrome Shelled Regios. I think I am very confused about the show, and just keep watching it so I can figure it out.

🤷

I think they draw stuff with computer tablets a lot these days. Probably draw some of it on a tablet and then have the computer copy it from one frame to the next instead of tracing it by hand. They could add in filters and effects that way, too. It would save time, but I don’t think it looks quite the same.

Correct. AFAIK much stuff (aside from the tracing) is done by computer nowadays. AFAIK most studios stopped switched from cel animation to digital around the early 2000s. In fact, Sazae-san is the only show I know of which still (mostly) uses cel animation - and even that uses digital for the opening and closing credits.

Of course many anime include CG, especially for animations of robots and other fighting vehicles. You know like in manga, it’s still hand drawn whether done in Photoshop with a digitizer or ink and paper and later scanned in.
Photoshop’s darn expensive - I should know because I use it in school, and only at school. I don’t have money to buy it right now. 😉

You know the opening credits for Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure? That (or parts of it at least) were in CG.

Funi actually has up to 72 eps on their website (in case u want some more repetitive-ness 😛 - actually I never bothered to watch it so I have no idea if it is, lol).

And wow, I just finished watching Madoka Magica, and I admit, I was amazed! Magical Girl shows are one of my least favorite kind of shows, but this was… well, it was pretty exceptional!! From the storyline, to the music and to the artwork, in particular during the battle scenes against “witches”). I actually thought the show possessed a bit of a dark atmosphere straight from ep 1, despite what I’ve heard about it not getting dark till a little while longer.

Madoka Magica major spoilers ahead (highlight to read if you’ve seen it):
[SIGN]I love how by the end of the series, it seems like Homura was the main, main character all along, lol, for everything that she went thru for Madoka! And somehow I just knew she was a good guy right from the beginning - I always felt there would be a good reason for how she was treating Madoka in the beginning, but I never imagined it would be anything like it was! 😃 That was a shocker![/SIGN]

The third movie (which is confirmed to be a sequel to the series and is coming to U.S. theaters in the winter - yep, I’ll go to the movies for this if it’s in a theater near me, LOL) seems to have all 5 of the main characters according to the ANN article on it (there’s also an interesting commercial about it in the following ANN link as well): www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2013-09-15/3rd-madoka-magica-film-3rd-ad-aired - Also, (for anyone interested) here’s the official 33 second movie trailer: youtube.com/watch?v=HnGESq_CiQY This should be an awesome sequel movie, and hopefully will also have a good and happy end to this series!

Lastly, that latest AoT ep  They need to stop with those ridiculous cliff-hangars already!!! shakes fist wildly

Ack, what have you done to me. Now I have lots to watch, and I will never go to bed.

Lol, are u also keeping track of a Queue list? And if so, how large has it grown? 😃

Do any of u guys also have a watch-list? And has it grown out of hand yet, lol?

Mine isn’t too bad (when compared to ridiculously rabid anime fans who have like hundreds), as I only have 29 on mine, and 8 of them are from this summer season. Next on my list to watch is Clannad actually… I just hope I don’t die from dehydration from a massive loss of fluid (from crying), lol. xP

I just have a bunch of shows that I can never seem to finish. I’m in the middle of around 12 or so. I have a list of them on Anime News Network, but I don’t have it memorized or anything. 😛

I just watched eight episodes of Hetalia… Not a huge use of time, since they’re only five minutes long, and it’s really funny. 😃

My friend keeps bugging me about watching Attack on Titan, so I’ll probably have to start that soon, too.

I have been watching Clannad/Clannad After Story lately. It is excellent, though the fact that certain dramatic elements were spoiled for me before I even started makes me worried that I won’t enjoy it as much as I could. Then again, I think I heard someone say that if a story isn’t enjoyable if it’s spoiled, it isn’t a very good story. I’m paraphrasing, but you get the point. I’m not sure if that’s true or not, but I plan to finish After Story anyway.

Also, does anyone know if any legal anime sites have been streaming Hyouka? I recently became interested in seeing it, and I noticed that neither Hulu nor Crunchyroll seems to have it. From what I’ve heard, it’s the only KyoAni series without a license in North America, so the answer is probably no, but I just thought I’d ask.

I’m afraid the answer is no, at least for those in the U.S. and Canada. A couple places u can always check, which u may already know, is ANN’s site for that specific title, and just check for any “Internet Streaming” headings. Another place is this awesome master list that contains all the legally free streaming shows in the U.S. and Canada (unfortunately, I don’t think it lists the non-free ones): Master List of Free Legal Streaming

CR has a thread for premium members in which we can recommend shows for them to license, and Hyouka is one of them (Hajime no Ippo is another, lol) that I mention like every 3 weeks or so, lol. I’ve seen others mention it as well, but I guess we’ll have to wait and see if they ever get it. 🙂

Just a forewarning that there are scenes that can be pretty gory with titans eating humans and whatnot. 😃 But yeah, that show really is just nuts, lol. I won’t even bother watching today’s new ep since I’m sure it’ll just be another cliff-hangar, so I’m just gonna wait till next week when the season will finally be over and I can watch it till the end!

Take a show like Aria the Scarlett Ammo, which is a great show - because of Rie Kugimiya (her character Aria is the ideal anime character for me - tsundere is always No 1) but besides that point, if you watch the episodes you’ll see that while most of the animation is traditional (albeit digitized) scenes showing the trains are obvious CG.

There’s some truth to that. A truly powerful story isn’t built on suspense and mystery, but on the interactions and decisions of the characters, the atmosphere and setting, the intricacy and beauty of the plot, and the ideas and themes expressed. None of that should be weakened by spoilers.

At the same time, simple suspense and mystery can be enjoyable. A good mystery isn’t totally ruined by knowing the ending, but it does suck some of the fun out of watching, since you won’t be able to guess the culprit (although I never do that anyway). Exploring worlds and learning about them is an immersive experience that can be shattered by a simple spoiler. For instance, anyone who explains Homura’s character to someone who just started watching Madoka Magica is robbing them of the chance to watch the events of the show with the same understanding of Madoka herself. There is something real being lost there. It’s also fun to watch a character grow, without knowing what direction they’re headed in. 🙂

Essentially, I can see it either way. The damage done by spoilers varies by work. For some works, it ruins it. For others, it doesn’t really change much. It just depends.

I haven’t watched After Story (or Clannad, for that matter), but I’ve heard that After Story is really good. It has an insanely high rating on ANN. Although that’s also true of Code Geass R2 and Stein’s Gate, so I’m not sure how much stock I should put in that.
Also, does anyone know if any legal anime sites have been streaming Hyouka?
I wish. 😦

I know there’s a couple of Sanka Rea fans on this forum. I found the manga series today in Barnes & Noble. Looks good overall. The art is very nice. Chihiro’s cousin (name escapes me) gets an uncensored breast shot in one bath scene in vol 1, so I don’t know if any of you have a problem with that. Just letting you know, though.

In other news, it’s that time of the season where anime shows are winding down. The 3rd season of God Only Knows finished Monday. It was bittersweet. Not just the episode itself, but the thought of Mondays with out good ol’ Kaminomi to brighten my day.

But a new anime season awaits us soon enough!

Many if not most anime nowadays use CG in some form or another AFAIK.

I liked Aria: TSA. Fun show, but not as good as Shana, Toradora, Hayate, or Zero, Rie Kugimiya’s big tsundere roles.

Reki was awesome, though. The world needs more of her.

I dunno. I actually prefer Aria to Louise in Zero. I wish there were more episodes of Aria. It’s the sort of show I can watch. Zero’s got too much of that freakish mixed world RPG stuff - you know - a melting pot of medieval and ancient Japanese stuff.

And I love TsundeRie. 😉 I think she’s married now, but we could have made a couple. sigh

Urusai baka hentai Tenofovir!” I could get used to that. sigh

I’ve been eyeing the Rightstuf Shana Bluray section… but must resist.

And then there’s idolm@ster and Iori Minase… 🙂 The idolm@ster game Rhythmic Record is my favourite iOS game or app. 🙂

It’s coming on DVD/Bluray.

BTW did you see that the Region 2 UK DVD/BD of Madoka Magica are significantly cheaper than US versions. I’m not a Madoka Magica fan though.

On that note, since I can read French pretty well and don’t have time to learn Japanese, I’m thinking about buying some French manga series that haven’t been licensed in the US yet–like The World God Only Knows.

I’m having two anime-related crises here.

1st: Running out of space for my anime DVDs
2nd: Running out of space for my anime CDs
