They exist, but they don’t get as much leeway in terms of characterization because male anger/violence can’t be brushed off or joked about the way female anger is. Doesn’t bother me- female tsunderes are often way too violent for my taste. I don’t mind the character type if it’s fleshed out and not overly violent, but the way girls can get away with lashing out and punching people is… Uncomfortable.

I guess I’m neutral on male tsunderes. While some of my favorite male anime characters like to tease and annoy the female characters opposite them, the important thing to me is that they respect them or grow to respect them over time. I guess that’s what I’d say of characters like Soul from Soul Eater- he’s arguably got some tsundere tendencies, but I like his character because he’s able to work well with Maka and respect her abilities.

Male/female pairs that work together and respect each other, please. Anybody have any shows like that for me? :3

She is however able to empathise and be selfless when she forgets about her past or deals to accept it. Otherwise she will act petty, histrionic, capricious and so on, but only around the one she wants to build defenses against or later around situations where there is a risk of losing that one to a competitor. It’s not that the “hero” defeats the tsundere by forcing his way on her, but rather he wins her over through trust and love despite the flak. Sometimes he can also pretend to or even be nasty in response too, and that gets her even more fired up although she may enjoy the experience of being with the hero, even when it’s an ongoing argument and insult exchange. The tsundere can be melted by love, not of the romantic sort, but of the traditional “doing” kind. The tsundere acts nasty but it’s all an act, an act of weakness, when she shows her true form, that’s where her strength lies. We of course only get brief glimpses of that. The tsundere character is also incredibly cute, no matter how she behaves. And we know what her true feelings are. We know if the hero will persevere he’ll win her over and she usually is a worthy person to win over. She is able to reciprocate to the strongest degree, even give up her life if necessary, for her hero.

While there are obviously some appealing characteristics of the character, I’m not going to like someone for being violent or nasty. Secretive or defensive, maybe, but not violent and nasty. It’s not that I have a problem with how tsunderes are treated, I have a problem with the tsunderes themselves. I’m not even sure how I feel about Winry from Fullmetal Alchemist given how many wrenches she throws at Ed. Anything beyond that is really pushing it for me. (And Winry doesn’t even jerk Ed around about how she feels.)

The only exception I can think of is maybe Asuka from Evangelion, who acts horribly but is an interesting character in her own right, and isn’t overly idealized as “cute”. Her rudeness is understandable but definitely wrong, and she doesn’t fully heal over the course of the series (nobody does; if anything, they get worse). Something like that, I might be OK with- but I’ll always prefer stories in which men and women simply work together to achieve a goal.

I realize it’s an idealized archetype, but it’s one that revolves around mistreating other characters to a large degree. I don’t have anything against it, really, as long as the character is fleshed out, but I prefer simple respect and teamwork.

On that note, I’m on episode 8 of Attack on Titan, and my thoughts are exactly the same as before. This show is really violent and I love it way more than I should.

Imo, it’s not the violence that makes it good, I think it’s the whole intense atmosphere, and how things seem pretty hopeless for everyone and wondering how humanity will get themselves out of this ~ and there are really moving scenes too, at times, especially in ep 7 with Mikasa there near the end; Minus the blood, and gore, that was one of my favorite eps of the series, and it was awesome to see Mikasa put into quite a predicament there and find the courage to “not give up” and “live no matter what” ~ I really liked her comment there when she thought about not being able to remember Eren. I think that was a “growing” episode for her. ^.^

Also… you’re lucky u don’t have to wait week by week for each episode, lol. This was a very tough series to have to wait for each simulcast episode! I remember one of the video comments for one of the episodes where someone had said they were going to build a time machine so they can get to the future and watch the soon-to-be-released eps. I think I actually came back to that comment a month or so after and asked if the time machine was built yet, lol.

I love Studio Ghibli. Howl’s Moving Castle and Totoro are on the top of my anime list. I have also enjoyed Sailor Moon since I was a little girl! Fruits Basket is another favorite. My kids enjoy them also.

Fruits Basket was one of my first animes. Tohru is always looking after everybody, and everybody else is always looking out for Tohru. I think I really liked the emphasis on how people need each other- it wasn’t just romance, it talked about the importance of family and friends, too. The humor usually worked, too.

And then sometimes it would stop being silly and say something that was actually profound. I still cry when I read the story of the Foolish Traveler in the manga. :bighanky:

Oh, I loved Howl’s Moving castle, even more than Spirited Away, which I also loved. And yes, Fruits Basket is great!

Ladies and Gentlemen, the Winter season has begun! And what better way to start the season off than with Space Dandy!

Yes, Bones is awesome! You can almost expect high quality stuff from them! Still haven’t seen FMA (or Eureka 7 which they produced, too) yet for some reason, lol, so my favorite from them is probably Xam’d, just slightly more than Gosick; Only a little bit, though, since Xam’d, for me, had this epic, larger than life, kind of journey throughout which I really liked, coupled with such an awesome ending as well, even better than that of Gosick’s. ^.^ Although, I know that’s debatable since some people I don’t think liked or rather, understood the ending to Xam’d.

I’m just not used to liking something with gore in it, so it’s weird.

U must be watching the wrong kind of gore shows, lol.
But seriously, I don’t really watch a whole lot of them myself, but I think there’s only 1 gore/horror show that I didn’t really like; that was Higurashi. I heard so much about it, but ended up watching maybe 1 or 2 eps, but it wasn’t the blood/gore that turned me off, in it of itself (though, I’m not a fan of it, either, of course), I think it was the character designs and the thought of these characters that look like kids, slaughtering one another that kinda turned me off. I might be misunderstanding the plot, though, since a lot of people seem to like this show, and I have a hard time understanding how many people could like a show with characters that look like little kids, slaughtering one another, and showing all the gore that comes with it.

Yeah, I like to marathon things myself, too, actually, lol. The thing that can be tough, though, is avoiding all the spoiler talk that’s going on, which tends to run rampant throughout anime forums, even in discussion threads that aren’t supposed to be talking about a certain anime. @_@

On the other side of things, though, when u watch each simulcast as they come out, it’s really nice being able to discuss it with the anime community, what u liked and didn’t like, and sometimes, even have new light/insight shed upon something that u didn’t quite fully understand at first or misunderstood, but after having discussed it with others, getting a better understanding why this person did what he did, and why, or why this event happened, etc. etc… To me, it adds a whole other element of enjoyment to series being able to do this week-by-week with the other crazy anime fanatics out there, lol. ^.^ Though, I honestly don’t consider myself a fanatic or an otaku, but I do like to talk with others that appear to be, though, lol!

What does everyone else here prefer to do? Marathon shows, or watch things on a week-by-week basis?

I never finished Xam’d, but it did look interesting. Bones was responsible for Soul Eater, too. I can’t think of anything they’ve made that wasn’t well above average quality.

That is a good reason, yeah. I could do it with maybe one or two shows in a season, but some of the people here end up watching four or five. That’s way too much for me

Oh my goodness! XD Many of the “regulars”, the people that I’ve come accustomed to talking/seeing on CR all the time, watch like 20 shows a season, lol, and participate in all, or at least most, of the anime discussion threads for each of the series! I don’t know how people can do that, lol. I think my eyeballs would fall out for one thing, and I don’t think there are enough hours in a day for me to keep up with all the discussions! XD I know there’s one guy there, who calls himself “the god of anime” (that’s not really his actual username, but it’s close enough), who’s watched around 40 in a season! O_O;

But yeah, maybe 1, or 2 at most, would be best for testing, especially since it can be extremely time consuming the more discussions that u find yourself partaking in… In the past, I know I’ve spent way too many hours talking over things with others over just 1 episode, lol. Amnesia, a mystery shoujo, is one those series that I loved the discussions for it, even more than the show itself, LOL ~ the show, itself, I thought was alright, actually (a lot of people thought it was laughably bad since the heroine, who doesn’t even have a name, is just… well… has trouble forming complete sentences is probably the best way to put it! I think most of the mistreatment of Tsunderes to other people is mainly slapstick violence. The “realistic” interactions are the verbal and non-verbal cues that don’t involve hitting people with sticks and wooden swords… Tenofovir did a good job describing these characters.

Asuka is a proto-tsundere. Developed way before these characters became popular, so the focus is different. The Rebuild movies Asuka has some elements of the post Shana Tsunderes though.
