Anime Thread #3: You Can (Not) Repost

So new baby in the house, so I went looking for something to watch while I was up at odd hours nursing the baby. Watched Noragami, it was short and sweet. There was some fan service, but not enough to make me turn it off. It had a little of the Fruits Basket combined with Kamisama Kiss, but more of a short story and less in-depth. I will probably be randomly browsing more series on Hulu. If you have any suggestions let me know.

I thought what I saw of Noragami (about 4 episodes) was pretty good from a quality standpoint and generally tasteful from a fanservice point of view. I might pick it back up again sometime.

It has a little bit of one girl adoring her senior, but there is no sexual stuff and it’s only a side thing. It’s a very sweet anime.
 
Well I’m almost done with Photo Kano as well as Hentai Ouji. Regarding the former, I’m actually surprised at how it goes further in its fidelity to the source material. I mean how many series based on dating sims actually present multiple endings? (Complete with the ED showcasing a different girl each time.) Very impressive actually. o.o

In other news, I’ve already taken up on new series. First up, we have Sword Art Online 2 (the obvious choice). And while I’m liking the action sequences and the music, I’m surprised that the episodes just feel really short! I mean sure, maybe it has something to do with reading the light novel but is the effect really that significant? :confused:

Second series I took up is dons soldier cap Disk Wars: Avengers. hides in a trench

And as I say this, I implore you all: Please. Don’t. Shoot. waves flag of truce I watch this series in peace. May no Marvel fan wish me dead. I see this series as merely a harmless attempt on Marvel’s part in reaching the young Japanese demographic. No. Flames. Pleeeeeease!! 😊
 
Woo! More people that like anime :). I haven’t read all the replies, so I must ask: does anyone here like Kuroshitsuji? Especially the manga :D.
 
Well this thread went really quiet.

I just finished watching The Irregular at Magic High School (on Netflix). It was pretty good, there were some weird one-sided incest themes from one of main characters, a little bit like SAO, but it wasn’t enough to make me stop watching and seem to resolve into just brotherly/sisterly love at the end. I had a little difficulty understanding the magic as defined in the series and thus had trouble understanding the protagonists powers, but some of that might have been due to a poor translation. In essence it was almost the same story as Chrome Shelled Regios (which I enjoyed): Boy with mysterious past and superior powers goes to high school and deals with his own issues, school problems and activities, as well as dealing with larger socio-political issues as part of the military all while attracting a few male friends as well as lot of female friends and groupies. Even the supporting characters fulfill the same roles and stereotypes. Despite all that, I enjoyed the series and found the characters fun and the story engaging.

Since finishing the above I have started watching Arpeggio of Blue Steal also on Netflix. It seems ok, not the greatest thing ever but certainly not the worst. I was never one for “boat” movies. Some of the submarine tactics remind me a little of Down Periscope. LOL.

On my lists to watch is Attack on Titan and Madoka Magica, but I have been putting them off, because I haven’t had the attention span to get into “deep” anime.

What are you all watching?

With said topic (how incest is presented)… -question in general for everyone-, do you think is acceptable to watch series like that?

I think is not good to watch productions that present these situations in positive light.

Attack on Titan has now a confirmed yuri pairing.

Madoka… ah, another case of yuri, but more subtle, is mostly done through symbolism, various hints, and the supplementary material, like some manga and videogames. Also, an interview with the author confirms that.

I agree with you…NOT good. But even here, on a ‘Catholic’ forum, evidently we are in the minority.

I think it depends, in the Irregular wasn’t necessarily portrayed as a good thing, as the sister got teased some if she was overly affectionate with the brother. It was one a sided/unrequited love and in the last 2 episodes her feelings seemed to resolve into pure sibling affection.

So for me, I treat it like other fan service, which is unpleasant but almost unavoidable in anime. I have stopped watching series where the fan service is over the top, but that particular series seemed to be exploring the line between sibling love and eros, as both main characters motivation seems to come from their affection and desire to protect the other, and (seems) to resolve against the incest.

For people who have watched and liked the first season of Attack on Titan can you tell me why you like it? I am 11(?) episodes in and I am not really impressed. It seems to rely on a lot of shock value and an over abundance of lines on the forehead.

Fanservice is a different category.

There is some fanservice that basically is directly an ocassion of sin, namely the more explicit ones, with nudity, various erotic situations, etc. That is something to avoid.

Also, there is another type of fanservice, like some beach scenes (without absurd things like clothing malfunctions, or nudity), etc, that is ocassion of sin depending of the viewer.

But things like featuring (or promoting) unnatural relationships as normal or good, are something to be avoided.

I saw some episodes of Attack on Titan last year, but I stopped. I was going to continue it again, but I was reading about certain pairing and decided to not watch it. And, said couple is now corroborated by the producer, according to what he said in a panel in a convention some months ago.

Hi guys! Another anime fan here! Though I’m pretty new to the forums and to anime. I have watched Attack on Titan though and have followed the manga up through its most recent chapters. I can see why you say it seems to rely on shock value, because, well, that’s definitely a prominent thing in the show and it really doesn’t go away, but as you do go on, the story gets incredibly more complex. If you’re on the eleventh episode, the arc you’re on will be ending pretty soon and then the real stuff will begin. The Trost arc’s more or less a set-up for everything that follows. Getting to know the main characters’ histories, what the Titans are like, how the soldiers fight, their end goal, etc. The second half of the first season is much stronger in my opinion, and then what follows in the manga even more so, though none of that will be released in anime form until 2016. I like it mostly for the characters, I’ve found them all to be very layered and well-developed, and I’m just really curious to see how all the mysteries and plot threads come together. Because there are a lot of them. Also, I love the soundtrack and the art style and I’ve got a bit of a soft spot for war stories with soldiers facing impossible odds. Even so, as much as I like it, I will admit it is a bit overrated.

And as for the yuri pairing, yes, it technically is there. However, the only hints as to any form of relationship between the two of them is that they are always together and would be willing to die for each other, a relationship that could be interpreted simply as being the best of friends. In fact, that is exactly how I interpreted it, until the announcement had been made. For now, I just ignore it. Nothing has happened between them in all 63 chapters so far, not even an verbal confirmation of anything more than close friendship, and the chances of anything happening are pretty slim, given the nature of the series, that is, the fact that there is next to no romance at all in it and that the chance of any character dying in any given moment is pretty high. If nothing happens, no sin, a disordered attraction, yes, but no sin or promotion thereof. Moreover, if I am correct, it was the producer or director of the anime (who works quite independently from the writer of the manga) who confirmed it. So, unless content is added to the source material, which, I admit, is possible, there is even less reason to believe the confirmation to carry any real weight. That’s all I’ve got to say about that.

But, on another note, any fans of Death Note or Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood on here? They’re the only other two anime (or is it animes? :D) that I’ve watched.
 
Depends on how much of a stickler you are. They don’t pluralize in Japanese. 😉

Now, to the disordered attraction part… why include characters like that? what is the purpose? is didactic? (to show is a problem, etc) No, I don’t think most of these productions have that intention… mostly, is author appeal, fanservice, or in some cases, like Urobuchi, they like to write these type of stories. Even some of them want to promote it too.

I know, but the author of the manga has spoken about it? has denied it?

Basically, I think some people just take that for granted… don’t react (or don’t show that reaction), etc. Because of that, I try to point to the questionable contents of some series when discussing them.

And then, we have the fandoms, that every year have gone worse and worse. Just a quick visit to some popular art sites, or to tumblr, can show how sad the situtions in some sectors of them is.

About the first series you mention there, I finished reading the manga some years ago, and watched the anime series too. I like the artwork, is semi-realistic and detailed.

The plural of anime, is anime. Although I’ve seen animes used too, both in English and in Spanish.

Hey there everyone. Just registered and of course I had to look for the anime thread as I do in all forums I am a member of :P.

Not sure if anyone else uses MAL but I’d be willing to post it. I’m a big fan although I haven’t had time to watch as much recently because of classes but I always like discussing with other fans.

Favorite genres would be slice of life (Nichijou, Pani Poni Dash, Azumanga, etc), RomCom (Toradora, Lovely Complex, etc), and other assorted moe-shows (K-On, Non Non biyori, etc); not too much into the action stuff.

Hi!

I’m watching Toradora again. Is one of the shows in that genre that has high quality and low fanservice content.

I saw only the first episode of Non Non Biyori. When I wanted to continue it, I was reading about Hotaru having a crush on Komari, so I didn’t watched it, is that true? that happens in the series?
