Anime Thread #3: You Can (Not) Repost

Charlotte is very good. So far two episodes, and there is no sign of a Charlotte but the show sounds intriguing. Also they are very tactful and avoid panty shots, when the girl kicks the guy (and she does that a lot!) her skirt covers everything up. Key/VisualArts seems to be going well here, so far. Oh and there is an imouto in this show which reminds me of Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya.

The Japanese SDF propaganda anime called GATE has also launched. First 2 eps were quite meh with the JSDF massacring the equivalent of Roman legions. Episode one had a soldier tell our main hero protagonist that he does not do any “disgusting” things with guys and only likes girls. I wonder if SJWs will attack this anime for suggesting gay sex is “disgusting”. The show also shows the Americans as being less than gracious. So far two eps and no signs of the cute alien world girls the show promised, but they’ll be there, including an elf girl, a Nagato Yuki like girl and a gothic lolita toughie and they will be joining the protagonist’s side as shown by the credits material.

I hope they don’t show actual nudity, but anyways, there are episodic reviews in some sites so I guess they are going to mention it, if is present in the next episode.

About the list of series from the season, as typical with similar compilations, they didn’t included much content warnings, and reading about some of these series, there are many vulgar series there, etc. The recommendable thing to do for the readers of this thread, is to read about a series before watching it, or even before watching the trailers. Tvtropes, database sites, wikis, these are sites that can be useful.

Well spotted, I didn’t actually think of this, I was more thinking along the lines of the few shows I watched especially the two mentioned here, and where to see them. But you’re right, a few of those shows are very dubious - like the Bikini Warriors thing. Still you can’t go wrong with Charlotte, which can be seen on Crunchyroll or Daisuki.net for free and legally.

I have been using hulu to watch my anime to great effect. The ads give me a chance to check email, fb, or do some quick research on the anime I am watching (or even do some laundry). It has a huge selection, and keeps track of your history and keeps a queue and a favorites list for you. Netflix does not have a great selection, but does have some of the popular ones. It has been awhile since I have used funimation and haven’t yet used crunchyroll.

Not only that one, from that list the majority are not adequate, as with many seasons of anime.

The first episodes of Gate don’t have nudity of fanservice. The content warnings ouwld be for violence. Now, the next episode segment at the end of the second episode seems to imply fanservice involving the elf girl, but the nuidty was implied, and they didn’t showed anything below the shoulders and upper chest area in that preview.

I think that the protagonist seems to care a lot about his otaku habits, that has the possibility of him trying to get people from the other world into his hobbies.

So I have been watching lots of slice of life lately. Funnily enough, I watch Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-kun, which is an anime about some friends making a manga. Now I am watching Shirobako, which is about 5 girls getting into the anime industry. LOL. It is pretty fun, clean, with lots of characters (it is a little difficult to keep all the characters straight). My one complaint is that they speak really fast (stressed out, busy, meeting deadlines), thus the subtitles go by really fast and it is hard to keep up, while still seeing who is speaking the line. LOL.

Monthy Girls Nozaki-Kun. It was well liked last year among some people for “changing” “gender” roles. For example, the “prince” of the school, a shoujo stereotype that usually is a guy, is a girl, that attracts other girls. The tsundere style character. is a man, etc. I didn’t watched that series. I find the “school prince” character and her interactions with other girls something questionable. Also, if it was praised for these things… well, that isn’t a good indication.

About Shirobako, yes, mostly clean save for “imagine spots” the director (for the one shat don’t know, is a series about making anime, so the director, is a character) has, and when they show the previous work of the director, a fanservice series that had budget issues and animation problems (although they don’t go beyond bikinis, cleavage, etc). I only have watched the first half and some episodes from the second, so I don’t know about the rest.

The Fate series. I have read about them, and I don’t recommend these productions. First, the syncretism between Catholicism and other elements (demons are not actually demons, but nature forces or something like that, paganism, etc. [Mainly, is not the pagan elements per se, but the mix between Catholicism and these]). Some Catholic characters like Priests are depicted as villains. And a Japanese Catholic girl character seems to be bisexual, and has a questionable scene with other girl in the first series (Fate Stay/Night). I think these are carryovers from the videogames, these are based on pornographic visual novels.

The wiki and tvtropes pages for these series are very informative, if you want to read about them.

Japan probably won’t care one bit about what a bunch of Western SJWs think. The main criticisms I’ve seen so far are over its use of militaristic imagery and patriotism, neither of which really bother me.

Frankly, I had forgotten about the nudity in the preview because it seemed so minor. I would hesitate to call it fanservice yet, unless we’re calling all nudity fanservice, which is far from true.

Nozaki-kun was great. Pretty clean show all around, I thought.

Eh, this doesn’t bother me very much. I really enjoyed Trinity Blood in college, and the confusion about Catholicism (even projected centuries in the future) was extreme.
I also watched Blue Exorcist, which is similar. And one of my favorite animes is Ghost Hunt, where one of the characters, is a child “priest” who is now excommunicated and does exorcisms for a living.

Someone up thread used the phrase “Felony misuse of Catholicism.” It just shows they are either very confused, or just really like some of the symbolism and want to incorporate it and some of the mythology into their story telling. A lot like they use German fairy tales or English or French culture (or even Chinese). If gives the story an exotic feel, a lot like how westerners were fascinated with oriental cultures.

I also watched Blue Exorcist, which is similar. And one of my favorite animes is Ghost Hunt, where one of the characters, is a child “priest” who is now excommunicated and does exorcisms for a living.

Not only is a misuse of Catholic elements, but the portrayal of Catholicism as if were just another group along a cosmology that isn’t even Christian. That is the impression I got when reading the wiki of the series.

About the second paragraph, I know that. But the more “researched” elements a work has, it implies more knowledge of what they are doing.

I just finished Shirobako last night. I really enjoyed it, especially if you are looking for a slice of life. It was nice to watch a show that was not about highschoolers. They made lots of puns and jokes about actual anime (Prince of Baseball, etc). I did finally get a grasp of all the characters, despite them adding new ones with little or no introduction. They continue to talk very quickly requiring some pausing or “rewinding” of the show in order to keep up. LOL. It remains very clean.

Eek, Akigami no Shirayukihime, Snow White with the Red Hair, started. I am super excited (seen the first two episodes). I am a little disappointed over the character design. The manga used nice crisp lines (Zen always had a crease line down the center of his pants). The designs are a little simple, the faces rounded out and details taken away, thus depriving the faces of some of their expression. But it is weird, because sometimes the character looks nothing like in the manga and sometimes they look exactly like. So the art style is not my favorite, but I don’t hate it either. I probably just have to get used to it. So far the way they are handling the story line, plot and character development is good. Super excited about how far they go in the story line.

Science fiction, I’d say. Fantasy. I looked into the offerings on netflix and it all seemed to involve girls’ boarding schools and/or vampires.

You might like the classic Gundam series, then…and look at fansub web sites and not just Netflix for older shows. I think Zoids (another old show) would be considered sci-fi genre as well.

Cyborg 009 and Kikaider might suit you, too. I also liked GaoGaiGar, aimed at kids, but very good in my estimation.

Those are web sites where fans do English subtitlling of anime. Often they’re the only sources for obscure series that never had a general subtitled release (I’m still trying to find every subtitled episode of Deltora Quest, which also qualifies as fantasy).

Do a search for a series you want, like ‘G Gundam, English subtitled.’ A few of the sites that come up will be the fan-dubbed versions. Watch out for the few sites that have McAfee virus advisories, but most are safe enough.

If a series I like is commercially available subtitled, I’ll always try to buy it, but in some cases, only fansubs exist.

Glad you are liking Shirobako!, I really enjoyed it.

You could try Snow White with the Red Hair(Akagami no Shirayukihime). It is more romance, with hints of the fairy tale, no magical or special powers. The main character is a herbalist who meets a prince. It is airing now. I thought the initial character designs and animations (like the opening) were a little rough strange (I have read the manga) but it got much better by the third episode. I am watching it on Hulu. but crunchyroll and funimation both have it (I believe). I am really enjoying it now. I hope it stays good. (I haven’t followed a currently airing show since the second season of Kamisama Kiss.

I started watching My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU, I am on the second season, and am finding it amusing. The main character is the hilarious, is a dark sort of way. But I am now wondering if it is going to end “unsatisfactorily.” The plot doesn’t seem to be moving very much. And I kind of like how the main character isn’t “perfect.” He slouches, doesn’t have perfect anime proportions, and has “dead fish” eyes, usually reserved for the vaguely bad guys in the background.
