I totally agree, Mary. And as well I wonder about the character of those like Kennedy, Pelosi, Biden and others who would cast a vote in favor of abortion and still call themselves Catholic and go so far as to take communion in the public eye with everyone knowing they committed sin without rightful confession to not do it again. They continually vote in favor of abortion and to me that deserves excommunication.
technically they ARE excommunicated…

and they might be doing themselves more damage than they realize… since in 1 Cor 11:23, it says*** “He who eats and drinks without recognizing the Body eats and drinks a judgment on himself.” ***

i think Kennedy ditched Catholicism for Episcopalianism or some other such thing…

I was under the impression that this forum was about Ann Coulter but since there were 17 pages I didn’t take the time to read all of them – also noticed that many comments were about Ted Kennedy.
My thoughts are about Ann Coulter – I seem to recall that years ago after 9/11 she wrote a book (can’t remember the name of it) about the World Trade Center. I started reading the book but after several times on her part she mentioned that some of the widows of the firemen who were killed were probably happy because it meant that they received a lot of money, I got disgusted and threw the book away.
I was married to a fireman and while he fought many fires none of them were like the World Trade Center. Also I know someone who lives in New York and every fireman in the firehouse that would take care of where she lived was killed in 9/11. While I watch the news on TV I got to the point after 9/11 I just couldn’t take it any more – I would NEVER, EVER read a book by Ann Coulter again!!!
i think you are being unfair because she didn’t say exactly what you claim she did.

I read the book (I think) that you are referring to. I’ve read 3 or her books and in one, she mentioned the “harpies” who lost their husbands… but it wasn’t put as you put it…

she was just angry about how they blamed Bush for 911 - and sucked up to the Democrats… etc

Are you trying to tell me it’s O.K. to call a fireman’s wife a “harpie” – to me that’s an insult. I still can’t stand Ann Coulter and would NEVER read one of her books. Also I might mention that I am a Republican and very conservative!!

gee, whatever happened to that “sticks and stones” thing???

are we becoming a nation of major whiners and cry-babies???

The book was Godless: The Church of Liberalism. And what she said was that some widows seemed to revel in the publicity of their husbands deaths. The widows that she was talking about were NOT fireman’s wives. One was a lawyer whose husband was the senior VP for a financial company. So you are avoiding books of someone that didn’t say what you thought they said.

yeah… So there… 😃

i can’t help but think that those who are vehemently against A Coulter - and yet call themselves Christian… do so because they really aren’t that against abortion…
You can help but think it. That’s a pitiful excuse for your uncharitable and irrational statements.

You can’t actually defend what Coulter has said, so you use her anti-abortion stance as a shield. That’s despicable. You are holding the unborn hostage by telling us that we can’t really be prolife if we don’t sign on to all the other despicable stuff that one anti-abortion public figure chooses to advocate.

My prolife convictions are one of the things that make me so vehement against Ms. Coulter. If I disagreed with everything she said, I would probably just laugh at her. But I see her and other right-wing figures discrediting the prolife cause in the eyes of many people. It’s hard to get left-wing folks to look at the powerful arguments for the prolife position, because they are convinced from the start that this is just as “wedge issue” used cynically by rightwing politicians who don’t really care about anyone’s life. I don’t defend my left-wing friends for thinking this, any more than I defend you for your very similar attitude to other moral issues. But the fact is that you and left-wing folks with genuine moral concerns (and believe it or not, they do have genuine moral concerns) are canceling each other out. You are refusing to listen to each other because each of you sees the despicable, immoral elements of the other side’s platform, and each of you suspects the other of just using ostensibly moral causes as a wedge to promote evil.

We need to stop this silliness. We need to listen to the claims of justice and mercy no matter which political platform has chosen to advocate them in specific instances, and no matter what unsavory characters may be using them for political gain or to promote immoral ideological agendas.

actually i prefer to be myself… thank you. if you don’t like it… uh… well, you have options…

The truth is sometimes painful, isn’t it?

The entire media was celebrating those kill-Bush books and plays.
What play? Are you talking about Death of a President? You really can’t distinguish between a fictional work and a call for murder?
CBS conspired to create a false story about Bush’s service
That’s slander. You have no evidence that this was a conspiracy rather than an honest mistake (no doubt aided by bias)?
—a story that even a CHILD could penetrate as a fabrication
A well-indoctrinated right-wing child, no doubt. Who would probably also believe that Obama is a Muslim.
Would you like me to name the celebrities, such as Franken and Goldberg, who called for Bush’s death? They did it almost every day
I presume that this is meant as hyperbole. You are of course allowed to use hyperbole. Ann Coulter is allowed to call for mass murder and it’s OK because some of her supporters think it’s humorous, even as others offer the completely incompatible excuse that she was blind with grief and rage. But when Franken (I don’t know who “Goldberg” is) jokes about assassinating Bush, that to you is inexcusable. And by the way I think that joking about assassinating Bush was inexcusable. I’m no fan of Franken. I’d be happy to see Franken and Coulter banished to a desert island together. (And lest this be used against me, this really is A JOKE and does not reflect any desire on my part that the rights of free speech be abridged!)

I would still claim that Franken’s remark is less horrific than Coulter’s, both because it’s more obviously a joke and because it calls for the death of one person whom Franken believes to be doing horribly evil things, whereas Coulter calls for the death of the innocent and blasphemes against Christ while doing it (by calling for the use of force to convert Muslims to Christianity).

Now we could reasonably compare Pat Robertson’s remark about Chavez with Franken’s about Bush. We could argue over whether Robertson was joking and whether calling for the assassination of your own president is worse than calling for the assassination of someone else’s. But Coulter’s remark is, again, on a whole other level of horror.
Air America was filled with such venom, and unlike the educated and acerbic 97-pound weakling’s books, serious.
That’s just crazy. Find me one left-wing person who doubts for a minute that Franken was joking. (Of course you don’t want to believe he was.) On the other hand, it’s clear from this thread that Coulter’s supporters can’t agree on whether she was joking or not.
But, that’s what happens when you mainline your news sources from the statist cheerleading squad—a biased view of reality.
The funny thing is that you and other right-wing folks on this forum obviously listen to left-wing sources a lot more than I do!

DESTROYED??? I wonder how that word relates to Catholics?

Socialism is not sensible; it is destructive to the free spirit of man/woman and his/her relationship to God as an individual.

I would rather have an accused loud mouth like Coulter tell the truth than a whispering socialist demigod plying his deceit in back rooms.

Ok, then I must ask at what level are you a socialist and where on that ladder does your pro-life stance lay its foot.

From my readings the Catholic Church is a bit on the socialist side of the spectrum when it comes to health care. In that I have no specific issue or objection although I am in opposition to any government entity giving advice to my doctor who is responsible for my health care.

But, when the church ignores the danger to life in acceptance of a ‘health care’ bill that includes abortion and end of life consultations then my voice will be heard in opposition loud and clear. And I do take fault with the Church when it allows those who vote in support of abortion to receive communion openly and with fanfare and be given awards. That to me is an affront to my basic religious beliefs as a Catholic.:o

Can not call it ‘care’ if the baby in the womb is cast out upon the street as if it never bore a soul.

The population of Catholics that post on this message board do not appear to be representative of the body of Catholics that I have met and interacted with in my time. I have rarely encountered a Catholic that supports wars, does not support health care reform or, importantly, would be self described as conservative.

I have lived in both Oregon and Massachusetts and this is where the majority of my interactions have come. Perhaps this has something to do with. None the less, it is disconcerting for me to hear some of the political arguments that get put forth by Catholics on this board.

Many American Catholics are left wing. The folks on this forum are here to get away from that aspect of Catholicism, in part.

good point - i haven’t watched TV in yrs so didn’t even know about this Kill Bush trash…

but is it really all that surprising… Once you take the right to live away from one group or person, so easy to take it away from others… so we’re not surprised when liberals advocate death… again…
So how do you explain conservative advocacy of death?

Conservatives generally seem much happier advocating death than liberals. That’s the main obstacle the prolife cause faces. The defense of the unborn (and of those at the end of life) seems usually to be maintained most loudly by those who don’t seem to care about any other kind of life. And thus, people not already convinced of the prolife and anti-euthanasia cases are likely to dismiss them as cynical ploys by people who do not otherwise seem overly concerned with human life.

Ms. Coulter is one of the prime offenders in this regard.

Edwin

Socialism is not sensible;
Perhaps you could point to the post in which I have advocated socialism. Admittedly I’ve raised questions about broad accusations of “socialism.” But I do not consider myself a socialist–or even, for that matter, a liberal. If anything, I’m a Distributist.

for sure…

the Left is, as you probably know, trying to take away the right to free speech…

but not to worry…

that only applies to Conservatives…

I’m bored…

for the 1000th time:

Jesus said that there are few who find the narrow road to eternal life… (st Mt 7:13, 20, st Lk 13:24)

This explains why there are so many so-called liberal Catholics.

Actually there’s no such hting… You can’t be liberal (pro-birth control, pro-abortion, pro-euthanasia, Communistic) and be Catholic…
