In my opinion, most folks don’t acknowledge that we are, in fact, in a state of war. The enemy is not pulling their punches, but we are.
We are making a somewhat half-hearted effort to behave decently, in contrast to the terrorists’ wholehearted embrace of atrocity, sure.
Ann Coulter is trying to make the point that if we are at war (which we are), then we should not be holding back and pulling our punches.
That isn’t a legitimate point for anyone with a shred of moral decency. Forget that whole Christian thing (which would indicate that we should let ourselves be tortured to death rather than lift a finger to harm others). Just basic natural-law decency indicates that if we are going to wage war at all we must “pull our punches” to ensure that we do not harm innocent people.
We are basically just sitting there and letting them do whatever they want to us
That’s just bizarre. You are seriously out of touch with reality.
Ann Coulter is trying to tell us that we need to take appropriate action in all four areas
Without regard for moral considerations. And then people have the audacity to say that she is some kind of upholder of Christian virtue and that opposing her means that one is not a real Christian!

Seems that we have already forgotten 9/11.

It wasn’t just a bunch of good old boys who took airliners for joyrides.

If anyone is seriously interested, click here and view what author Peter Lance has to say about how the 9/11 perpetrators conspired to do their terrible attacks.

You can also read his books. He has written three books on the same subject.

Since he has been totally ignored, maybe the only way to get a rise out of people is to take Ann Coulter’s tactic … she has not been ignored.

Read her books.

Or view her most recent interview on Book TV.

Oh I see!!! An immoral position is the opposition to abortion and all those who deem it a rightful choice.
When have I criticized Ms. Coulter’s position on abortion? You are using this as a shield for the many wicked things she advocates. That’s frankly despicable.
Ann at least speaks her mind about this evil and somehow she and the posters in this forum are the immoral ones???
Upholding a moral position on one front does not justify one in defending many other kinds of wickedness.
And the talk is focused on the blunt and abrasive nature of Ann Coulter in the defense of the unborn.
Your talk is focused on this, apparently because it’s the only position of hers that you can actually defend.

That is not what we are criticizing. Stop pretending that it is if you want to have any credibility in this discussion at all.

Your refusal to address the actual points being criticized speaks volumes for how immoral and indefensible most of Ms. Coulter’s positions are.

This would be like my claiming that your (legitimate) criticism of my denomination’s stance on homosexuality (with which my own diocese does not agree) is somehow a criticism of the Episcopal Church’s stance on war or capital punishment or some other unrelated issue. That would be silly. I will defend my denomination where it acts morally, and not where it acts immorally. I suggest that you adopt the same policy.

Edwin

Seems that we have already forgotten 9/11.
Nobody’s forgotten it. But it doesn’t justify our doing evil in turn.

Do you want to be like the terrorists, or to take their actions as a horrible warning of what happens when we start thinking that the righteousness of our cause (of course everyone thinks their own cause is righteous) justifies immoral means.

Edwin

Individuals must “turn the other cheek” when dealing with other individuals.

States cannot turn the other cheek when they are attacked or they will be wiped out.

War is very bad, but when a country is attacked you MUST go after the attackers. War is unpleasant. No marquis of queensbury rules.

[There are a few rules … but the rules only apply when combatants follow the rules. Our attackers don’t qualify because they hide among the civilian population, don’t carry identification, etc. Been discussed numerous times.]

Ann Coulter is trying to make the point. But those attacking Ann Coulter seem to want us to fight with watercress and cucumber sandwiches with the crusts cut off.

That’s not the way nations fight wars.

Miss Coulter turned ME around precisely due to her ‘abrasive’ approach. For every person, there is an entryway.

distracted is correct. The right to life precedes all other rights, and it is not given by the state, or by Satan’s cheerleaders.
sometimes maybe a little “abrasion” is necessary…

as Coulter always says, the Reps are too busy trying to be nice to the Dems…(paraphrase) which they are far from appreciating…

and i don’t know why they say nice things about the Dems anyway…EVER. As far as Im concerned there’s nothing nice to say - when ALL of them… (except maybe 1 or 2)
are in favor of mutilating unborn babies…:mad::mad:

But an entryway to what? From your posts, I am not convinced that Ms. Coulter provided you with an “entryway” to anything good or holy. In fact, your advocacy serves to discredit her further in my opinion, given the consistently immoral nature of the positions you argue on this forum.

Edwin
why don’t you cut out the ad hominem?

nothing better to use as a way to win the argument?

Individuals must “turn the other cheek” when dealing with other individuals.

States cannot turn the other cheek when they are attacked or they will be wiped out.
That’s an obvious attempt to avoid the force of Jesus’ teaching. The more tenable way to put this is, in the words of Martin Bucer, that we are called to turn our own cheek and not our neighbor’s. That’s a valid argument. But that’s not how you put it. Instead, you speak as if there are things called “states” which have rights and obligations and legitimate courses of behavior available to them, and which *at the same time *are free from the obligation to follow Christian teachings. This is as irrational as it is immoral. There are three possibilities:
  1. The “state” has no validity as a corporate entity–it is simply a convenient way of talking about how some people act on behalf of other people, so that the moral rules applying to individuals apply no less to those individuals acting for the common good.
  2. The state is a corporate entity, and insofar as Christians are involved in shaping its actions they should do so according to Jesus’ teachings. In other words, insofar as the state is a Christian state its actions should be similar to those of a Christian individual.
  3. The state is a corporate entity, but since it is not a Christian corporate entity Christians have no business being involved in it. They should respect it as part of God’s providential order, but at the same time recognize its essentially pagan nature.
I think there are good arguments for and against each of these positions, and my own view is that any one of them may be legitimate depending on the circumstances (in a liberal democracy such as the United States I think that the first definition applies best, in explicitly Christian countries the second, and in countries with a clearly non-Christian identity the third–but I don’t claim great weight for this opinion).

You seem to be saying something like
  1. The state is a corporate entity completely free from any obligation to follow Jesus’ teachings–but at the same time Christians can and should participate in it and support its actions.
I cannot see this as anything other than idolatry and unfaithfulness to Christ. To use traditional Catholic terminology, it is a clear denial of the Social Kingship of Christ.
War is very bad, but when a country is attacked you MUST go after the attackers. War is unpleasant.
Cleaning a sewer is unpleasant. Killing civilians or treating any human beings in a way incompatible with their God-given dignity and with Christian charity is not just unpleasant (in fact, it may be very pleasant to some people under some circumstances). It’s wicked. We are not talking about whether certain kinds of warlike actions are pleasant but about whether they are wicked, and you show the essential amorality of your position by using the frivolous and irrelevant word “unpleasant.”
[There are a few rules … but the rules only apply when combatants follow the rules. Our attackers don’t qualify because they hide among the civilian population, don’t carry identification, etc. Been discussed numerous times.]
The repetition of an immoral position does not make it moral. We are not just talking about “rules” in the sense of rules of a game. We are talking about basic principles of natural law and Christian morality. These do not cease to be binding on us just because our enemies choose to disregard them. If we imitate our enemies, we obviously lose our claim to relative justice and morality in comparison with them. I don’t understand why this is not obvious.
Ann Coulter is trying to make the point. But those attacking Ann Coulter seem to want us to fight with watercress and cucumber sandwiches with the crusts cut off.
No, we want to fight in a manner in keeping with natural law and the teachings of Christ. The only possible alternative for Christians is not to fight at all. But most of us are not brave or virtuous enough to embrace Christian pacifism.
That’s not the way nations fight wars.
It (i.e., what I am advocating and not your silly caricature thereof) is not the way wicked and idolatrous nations fight wars, true. It is the way righteous nations which respect God’s laws fight wars, if they fight them at all.

Edwin

I have not noticed this.

Generally, when people spend a lot of time griping about how nice they are, it is because they are not very nice at all. Think about the people you know who are always complaining about being too nice and how other people take advantage of their niceness. Are they generally people you admire?

Edwin

why don’t you cut out the ad hominem?

There are plenty of other things in my posts. You use my “ad hominem” as an excuse to ignore the substance of what I am saying.

SailorKenshin used his personal testimony in favor of Ms. Coulter. It is fair to point out to him that I am not impressed by this testimony.

If you choose to defend wickedness, I will point out that this is what you are doing. Call it whatever you like.

Edwin

in case you haven’t noticed, that Contranini guy always attacks the poster, rather than (or in addition to) poster’s remarks…

maybe you could join me in NOT responding to ad hominem…

he seems to be in need of confession… or maybe he doesn’t see his “attitudinal issues”, the ones others here @ CAF see - and are subjected to on a daily basis… :hypno:

but that’s why confession would be a good thing - maybe the priest WILL see it (?)

that’s assuming he’s Catholic… or “Catholic” or wahtever…

You’re just as guilty Distracted. You take criticism of Coulter’s remarks and turn it into those who are critical somehow being too liberal or not caring enough about abortion.

Sorry, but until she apologizes for wishing Timothy McVeigh would have visited the New York Times (liberal viewpoints are no justification for being murdered by a terrorist act) and saying that we should carpet-bomb innnocents, she will remain a less than admirable person in my eyes.

“Oh but she’s fighting against abortion! She speaks her mind when we need it the most! She despises the liberal Godless people!” I know that’s what mindset many of you have. But people who bomb abortion clinics would also call themselves anti-abortion and thought they were fighting the good fight. But just because you have good beliefs and motives doesn’t guarantee a Godly way of carrying them out.

You can’t focus on the issue at hand. Rather than admit, “I like Ann Coulter but I can’t support some of the things she says,” you fight when logic has abandoned you.

If you still want to admire Coulter, that’s fine. But don’t hold her up on a pedestal and excuse everything she does because she fights against abortion. Because someone saying they want to invade a country and forcibly convert it to Christianity is not someone I want speaking on behalf of my pro-life views.

quit acting like you know me. Its so presumptous… and tiresome.
I am not acting like I know you. I am describing your *posts. *And I did the same thing with regard to Sailor Kenshin.

I tend to assume that we are all nicer people than we appear to be on these forums. The Internet often brings out the worst in people. And I try to assume this particularly of others. (In my own case, I know that the behavior I engage in on the Internet reflects my very real sinfulness, although it may do so in a distorted and exaggerated way.)

But the fact is that when I make a substantive challenge to your position, you claim “ad hominem” and refuse to respond. That is an accurate description of what you have done several times now.
maybe you ought to look in a mirror…
What wickedness am I defending?

Interesting. Supposedly I am the one who makes personal attacks. Yet you are the one telling me I need confession. Do you see the inconsistency here?

I admit that sometimes I stray into attacking the poster rather than the post. I try not to do it, but I’m far from perfect.

However, the more constructive response is for you to respond to what is *substantive *in my posts.
that’s assuming he’s Catholic… or “Catholic” or wahtever…
I say explicitly in every post that I am Episcopalian.

I do go to confession in the Episcopal Church, though not very often (last time was just before Easter).

Edwin

I’m willing to bet that Ann Coulter’s extra-large ego would be gratified knowing that people spend so much time talking about her. That’s what she’s all about: herself.

Is the Episcopal Church and Lutheran Church immoral for giving legitimacy to same sex marriage and going further to ordain practicing homosexuals. I think it is and nothing you might say would change my mind on that. I make a point and you continually evade the original premise and then off you go with your self serving out of context issues and attack what might simply be an abrasive attitude in bringing to the fore her point.

I agree with the poster who stated we are at war and will suffer in the not to distant future if we do not answer the threats NOW. Ann is a voice of warning but you and other ‘progressives’ would want us to ignore the threats facing us.

Why do I feel like I am arguing with pre WW2 Neville Chamberlain???:banghead:

That’s not true. Its a lie by Ann Coulter. The Democrats are the party that rolls over at every opportunity, while the Republican Party makes up outrageous lies about Democratic politicans and war heroes, all the while screaming like little children that the Democrats are worse. That was for years the main criticism of the Democratic Party by Democrats; that the Democrats didn’t have the guts to stand up and go toe-to-toe with the Republicans when they tried to smear them. It still is, actually.
