She was raised Catholic, left the Church, wrote all the vampire books, etc. Then, a few years back, she came back to the Cathoilic Church. She stopped writing vampire books and that genre. She has written 2 out of the 3 books of a trilogy about Jesus and his life. The books are very good.

I am sad she has made this decision. I hope she finishes the third book of the trilogy and it is written in the same way as the first two

This seems less like a rejection of Christianity than a rejection of a certain caricature of Christianity than is really only embraced by people who have already denied it. It reminds me of a passage in Dan Barker’s book Godless, where he reports that after he convinced his mother of atheism, she expressed relief that she didn’t have to hate anyone any more. It makes you wonder what she ever thought Christianity was in the first place.

It makes me wonder is Rice really converted to Christianity in a meaningful sense in the first place. Perhaps she was caught up in a wave of religiosity and indulged it, without actually turning away from her secular values. People who convert on that basis, unless they wallow in ignorance, will eventually discover that Christ teaches certain things that don’t really fit with those values. And if they remain fixed to those values in spite of it, then they can develop a hostility to those who do embrace Christ’s teachings, resulting in the kind of straw-man attack she has produced above. Not that I know much about her, but I think this rant is pretty transparent in its own right.
I read her “rant” as a prophetic insight she had…the Christ she embraced and believed in is not the same as the church she attended…she could not reject the image of Christ living before her in her son and those marginalized by conservative Christianity…she had to be faithful to His call…“Follow me.”

I believe there is a Buddhist saying…“Once a person has become Enlightened, they cannot become un-enlightended.” She could not blind herself to the image of God in those around her…no matter what her church said.

As a facebook user, I reported the page as being racist against Christianity!

I don’t believe she…nor I for that matter…have abandoned Eternal Truths…we both cannot blind ourselves to the image of Christ we see in those who are so very different from us…as Ghandi said…“I have no problem with Christ…it is His followers I have problems with.”(paraphrase)

The “leper” she is called to reject in the name of Christ…wears the face of Christ Himself…and THAT she cannot do…I understand her anguish.
Then maybe you understand MY anguish at her utterly false presentation of Christianity, and conservative Christianity in particular.

Perhaps you can also understand that we who are consevative and obedient to the Magisterium have been ‘demonized, marginalized,’ (as certain divisive factions like to point to others), and just plain lied about for far too long.

It’s tragic to see such people who bend with every gust of wind and who bow to every fashion.

As for her Catholicism, her Christ book might have been written by a Protestant, as it contained so many heresies I stopped reading it.

She has just shown her true colors. She was a cafeteria Catholic all along. And her two Jesus books didn’t top the sales charts like her vampire novels. I am curious what her new marketing strategy will be.

Yes, while I understand the anguish you must face when your beliefs are not supported in a secular society…or science…or psychology…or sociology…or the humanities…you still have your civil rights protected…you aren’t always able to deny civil rights to the “lepers”…and that must cause great difficulty…sorry…I don’t do sarcasm well.🙂

But then who will save their souls?

Seriously. Though her tantrum deeply offended me, and sounds like she drank Mr. Clean, then fell off the roof and landed on her head, what of her soul?
What of the souls of others who might otherwise be scandalized and led into sin by a supposed ‘Catholic’ with wrong and harmful ideas?

I guess her 1998 re-version was because she thought Christianity was “nice”. Now she sees it isn’t “nice”, so she takes a step back from it.
I was never really convinced that she was convinced Catholicism was her end-all. She brought up her disagreements with the church early on–especially on the homosexuality issue. At least she’s being honest at this point and not doing the cafeteria catholic thing.

Do we know that she ever understood the Gospel? I have not read enough to know. Regardless, bad publicity stinks.

Anne Rice’s announcements via Facebook.

“As I said below, I quit being a Christian. I’m out. In the name of Christ, I refuse to be anti-gay. I refuse to be anti-feminist. I refuse to be anti-artificial birth control. I refuse to be anti-Democrat. I refuse to be anti-secular humanism. I refuse to be anti-science. I refuse to be anti-life. In the name of Christ, I quit Christianity and being Christian. Amen.”

Ms. Rice and TEC would make a great fit

I would love to have a conversation with her. I am a conservative Christian and strive not to be all those things that she hates. I try to urge my fellow Christians not to be either. There are people in the church that do the things she does describe, and that misrepresents Christianity.

I’m a conservative Christian but believe homosexuals should be treated with respect and dignity, along with being shared the Gospel.

I am not sure where I stand with birth control, but do believe that along with preaching against it, the church needs to teach NFP to all. We must also teach them about handling family responsibilities properly and how to make mature decisions in this area.

Along with preaching against abortion, the church must deal compassionately with those who have been directly impacted by abortion, and offer healing to them.

While proclaiming the Gospel, and Christ as the way, the truth and the life, we must also love the non religious, and people of other religious as ourselves, with no alterior motives. We must listen to them if we expect them to listen to us.

As Christians we must seek social justice for the poor, while offering them ways to overcome their plight. We must instill a good work ethic in people. While not teaching them to rely on government handouts, we cannot blame the poor for their plight in life.

As a Christian, I believe that the church should advocate for the human rights of all, which include food, clothing, shelther and healthcare. They do not include big screen TVs.

Just a few examples.

I believe that she did…Her book speaks of the things she had trouble understanding as things that…She said that she did not have to understand many things; it was enough for her to trust that God knows & understands. 🤷 To me, that was a profound and almost childlike (NOT childish) faith in Jesus Christ as Saviour.
I am not quoting here…Just saying what struck me as what we all have to do at some times in our lives…If we are believers, we have to say, “OK, Lord, I don’t get this part, but I will place it in your hands”. (A long-ago British Methodist pastor once said that "Every Christian needs to have a mental file marked ‘Awaiting Further Light’. " I believe this is :thumbsup:true).
As I say: This is a deeply confused woman who desperately needs the prayers of all of us.

what heresies did you see in her book?

You and I disagree…friend Anne sees the issue I believe. She cannot “reject” out of hand simply because one’s religious beliefs condemn…science, psychology, sociology and other non-religous disiplines throw light upon the whole issues of human sexuality. The conservative branch of Christianity is wrong…completely…and Anne sees that very clearly…and rejects any notion that she must put her own God-given intellect aside and embrace teachings of a human organization that uses it’s own outdated psychologocal and sociological constructs to vilify the “stranger in it’s midst”.

Discrimination against gay and lesbian people IS based on WHO THEY ARE…not what they do…no matter what frame of reference is used to justify it…those of us branded “liberal” do not abandon God…we abandon falsehoods perpetuated in the name of “religion”.
The brand of Christianity that condemns “science, psychology, sociology and other non-religious disciplines” is not authentically conservative, and certainly not historic. What an authentic conservative opposes is a modern way of undertaking and interpreting the findings of those disciplines - an way that is based not on science but upon modern philosophical dualisms, which are presupposed for other reasons.

One of the most destructive of such dualisms, which bears on the subject of homosexuality, is the separation of facts and values. What I mean is the notion that the value of a thing refers to nothing intrinsic in itself but reflects entirely on the subjective reference of the person who values it. Hence when I say, “My dog is good” or “has value,” this statement provides information only about me, but not really about my dog. When this philosophical proposition is accepted, then the objective and subjective dimensions of human life become isolated from each other. It therefore becomes impossible to found any moral doctrine on the basis of (objective) nature, since moral doctrine depends on (subjective) value, and value is not part of nature. As a result, there is no way to say that this or that sexual activity is wrong by nature, because in this worldview, sexual acts don’t ultimately even have natures. Hence any claim that a natural law governs such activities can no basis and is just another social construct like many others.

One of the results of this amoral understanding of life is that it yields a falsified understanding of personhood, in which “who” a person is becomes a determination of individual will on the part of the person himself or herself, but is not a property of nature. A person is who he or she chooses to be, and that choice determines what is a real value for that person. Thus, to challenge a person on the basis of those choices becomes a challenge to “who” they are.

The alternative to this, which Christianity proposes, is that nature has value, and than the human body is a manifestation of that value. As such, the very existence of a body, in all its aspects, including sexual distinctions, is itself integral to the person, revealing to the person his or her own value. Thus an abuse of the physical characteristics of the body is inherently destructive of the person, of “who” they are. For this reason, a call to repentance to those who use their bodies in ways that violate their natural value is a means of calling them back to who they are, a call to live according the dignity of their own identities.

I have not here proven my point, just laid out what I think the the two alternatives are. This should be enough to show that simply criticizing us for attacking “who” people are on the basis of a “social construct” presupposes philosophical assumptions that are already antithetical to a Christian worldview. It is these presuppositions, not the secular sciences, that conservative Christians oppose.

Who cares?

Her Facebook rant is just a ploy for attention.

Oh woe is me. I’m leaving the church!

When will she announce the new vampire book?

I agree…except that I accept the diversity that exists between people concerning their sexual orientation IS GOD GIVEN and revealed through nature by that diversity…God’s amazing creation in all it’s diversity. I embrace that diversity…God made male and female in His image…in Christ there is no male nor female…gay or straight…bond or free. That is the diversity and freedom we have in Christ.

First, I have to admit I didn’t read through every post here (about 1/2, I think). I’m sort of in a rush today. But I wanted to add the comment that immediately came to mind.

Many, many, many devout faithful have moments of doubt. Even those of us who had supernatural conversion experiences still have those rough patches when looking around at the sorry bunch of sinners we all are… just begin to wonder.

In the old days, we would write about this in our private journal, or discuss it among close (safe) friends or a trusted Priest or Religious. We’d pray and anguish and stay pretty much mute for a good long while. And often (or usually) we would come around and be only stronger for the experience.

A common question to Religious and Priests by lay people is, “don’t you ever doubt?” And I’ve heard many a holy man and woman reply, “of course! we’re human!!”

What is sad is that in this age of social networking, a person can express what should be a private moment of sadness and doubt about the Church and share it with millions. Even sadder is when that person is famous with a following. And having been through a public reversion, only makes it sadder.

I truly, truly wish people would get a grasp about the implications of living our/their lives in the public through the social networking sites. This business of sharing every little pull or tug of our soul or conscience or desire, of putting it on a bulletin board for the whole world to see… it is a new thing, and it is a worry to me.

Earlier this year, Anne Rice shared a monologue otalking about her life, before she lost her faith, while it was absent, and then after her faith returned.
blog.beliefnet.com/idolchatter/2010/03/christ-haunted-anne-rice-share.html

It may be meaningful that she talks about being Catholic during her childhood, but not after returning to Christ. She seems to be focused on her personal relationship with God.

I am just guessing, but from that testimony, and her statements on her Facebook page today, I think she will finish her trilogy on Christ. I don’t think she has lost sight of God. What she did today was to reject what she sees as human traditions which are contrary to God. At least, that is how I see it - I could be wrong.

BTW, at the 9:03 mark the video appears to end. However, it is simply the end of her talking about her life. The final two minutes features her urging people to accept Christ into their lives.

“For those who care, and I understand if you don’t: Today I quit being a Christian. I’m out. I remain committed to Christ as always but not to being “Christian” or to being part of Christianity. It’s simply impossible for me to “belong” to this quarrelsome, hostile, disputatious, and deservedly infamous group. For ten years, I’ve tried. I’ve failed. I’m an outsider. My conscience will allow nothing else.”

Notice that she hasn’t give up on Christ, just “Christianity”.
2 Peter 2:20

She might have been close to christ, but she was facing away from Him and looking only at the crowd.
